My cat doesn't care about catnip....is that strange?

Here I am again talking about Bigguy! My son brought Easter present for everybody today including Bigguy . He brought him a little mouse that has catnip in it. I swear nothing makes this cat excited except at night when I go to bed and then I hear him running around in the kitchen playing with a ball that has a bell in it! We even left the mouse on the kitchn floor and came in the living room since he obviously likes being alone and still nothing...he went under my bed as usual.
Is it odd that catnip does nothing for a cat? Is my cat strange or what?

My mom's cat reacted very little to catnip compared to other cats. But, most cats really like it and it's fun to see them get pleasure out of it. I actually like it myself, in a tea, because it's very good for the nerves. It has a slight minty taste. And, contrary to popular belief, it's not the same as a popular narcotic that some humans like.

I read that it is good to put in tea and it's also good for colds. In fact I have a discussion somewhere about that. I was very surprised.

That's not strange at all. I have one cat that would rather chase his shadow than a mouse filled with catnip, but I have another cat that goes absolutely nuts over the same toy. Most catnip packages that I've seen these days even say that some cats don't respond strongly to catnip. It just varies, I suppose.

Well my cat is afraid of his shadow in fact he's basically afraid of everything including me! One of these days I hope he comes around and can trust me.

It's different for every cat. Some cats like it, some don't like it, and some just don't care either way. It's just like humans or any other animal. Each individual animal, and individual of each animal, has it's own preferences.

I was at my favourite pet store recently. It's 3 hours from where I live and I buy bulk quantities of pet mince while I'm there. It's frozen and travels well. It's a huge store that sells birds, fish, reptiles, dogs, cats, rats, ferrets, guinea pigs, and ,hermit crabs. Probably a few variations of the above as well. They have everything you can think of to do with animals. I asked them if they had any catnip and they had never heard of it. Well was my gaster flabbered!!!??? I was trying to explain it was a herb that cats loved and went really silly over and she gave me a funny look. I was quite disappointed. I believe I can buy some online to grow so I will try that I think. So long as I don't have to import it.

I've found a few sites about it here but when I check, it's not what I want. Sometimes it's just info, another was selling a liquid, one was a company in the states. I'd like to buy seeds or plants if I can, preferably seeds. I'd like to get it here though, not import it because the permit to import is over $60.

Ok, the site is called the Gardners Network so you should be able to search for it. The link isn't in my discussion.

No, this isn't that unusual. About 20 percent of cats are "immune" to catnip; it does nothing for them. I have two cats, one who goes crazy over the stuff, and one who wouldn't notice if I was growing a patch of it in the living room.

I heard that cats react to the smell of the catnip and not necessarily by eating it. Although some do enjoy that too. Sometimes I put out catnip and they devour it and other times they could not care less. I have noticed that they tend to go for the good stuff and don't like the cheap kinds that are just stems.

This catnip is in a tiny mouse and even the mouse does nothing for him. I shouldn't be surprised since nothing can get this guy excited.

I don't think I've ever had a cat that seemed to really care for catnip. They've all seemed... sort of unamused by it. They just didn't care for it. So, no, I guess it's not strange for a cat to not care for it. Unless all my cats are strange, too! LOL

Nope your kitty isn't strange..my two cats are the two most unimpressed cats in the world when it comes to any kind of toys or anything, including catnip...You should see my living room floor, there must be about ten different toys for them on it...including ones stuffed with catnip, and nothing, nada, they'll only play with them once in a blue moon. I even have some "Cosmic Catnip" which is supposed to be the best type of catnip around...nope, not impressed with that either--the things they DO like to play with? My pens, pencils, crumpled papers...go figure

Mine sure does. I spilled some in my closet when we first moved in - that was four years ago. I still catch him going to that closet and rolling around on that spot in the floor.

actually it is a genetic condition of a rare double recessive. A vet once told me that the cats who have this condition tend to have vision problems too, but they seem less susceptible to getting ill from feline leukemia. They carry it just as easily, just don't get sick as often.
