Life On The Farm

Have you ever spent time on a farm? It's hard to believe there are some people who have never seen one. I grew up on a small farm. We had all kinds of animals and grew every kind of vegetable you can imagine. We milked our own cows and gathered chicken eggs. We walked through corn fields that grew so high, the stalks towered over our heads. We could play hide and go seek in the sugar cane and in the fields, hiding for what seemed like hours. Some times, we had to give ourselves up because hiding places were so easy to find. We spent long nights inside the barn, sleeping on hay and rode horses much of the time. Have you ever spent time on a farm? Would you like to?

The hard work on a farm is where the best memories come from, I think.

I think I'd love to spend more time on a farm. I'd give up my house in the city if I could find one where I could grow my own crops and stuff. Good memories, but hard work.

Yes. I have stayed in a farm house, when I was in standard 2. However, at every night, we were under tremendous fear of 2 things. 1) snake and 2) centipede. But day time it was really interesting. I wish if I could own one farm house with a pond for swimming and a long road for running!

you are right, there are a lot of city kids that have never been out to the country. fortunately for us, my hubbys sister lives on a farm and we have even 'farm sat' while they went away. they have beef cows, so we dont have to milk them, but still have to feed them and the like.

They don't know what they've missed living in the city all their lives. Give the farm any old day. I used to hate milking the cows and would NEVER drink the milk. It took me years to like milk. Love it now.

I've seen all of that, but haven't lived it. A couple of years ago when I was in Minnesota, we had a small hobby farm. Six horses, a couple of dogs and cats, and a decent sized garden. That's about it!

Well, that life is really attractive. To be honest, I have never seen a farm myself. In my country, there are not that many farms, especially in my province. I always dream of living this kind of life on a farm. It's just great to be there.I wish one day I can spend some days on a farm.

Maybe someday you will chrissieatu, if you wish hard enough. It's a nice way of life - peaceful and quiet, but lots of work.

I realize that there are a lot of works on the farm. But I take it as another form of happiness. I agree with you that if I desire it strong enough, I can make it one day.

My Grandfather had a farm, so, I spent many days playing with the animals, milking cows etc. The absolute worst job was picking rocks. I remember walking through the fields picking rocks and putting them in the back of the trailer on the plough. Working on a farm is back breaking tough work, but, very satisfying. I think people would have a new appreciation for the food we eat if they saw where it came from. I really think people think the meat and veggies we eat come from the grocery store. I would love to buy a hobby farm, with a cow and a couple of horses.

Now - picking rocks...There's a memory and a half. I would have never remembered that if you hadn't brought it up. Made me laugh. Yea, food comes from the grocery store - LOL - just like chocolate milk comes from chocolate cows....Hahahahahah I love it. thanks for the memory bonbon

I lived right by a farm for two years, when i was 5-7. Then I lived on a farm for a year when I was 17. My man comes from a farm and we just resently bought it from his parents. We will be moving there, but not just yet.

You're looking at a one-hundred percent city gal, having lived in the borough of Queens NYC all her life just about...although on vacations, when I was a kid used to vacation in the Lancaster, PA area where of course there were farms..but nope never actually been on one--ironically I've always considered myself a country gal at heart since it's only when I'm near or in any natural setting, even if it's park area I feel more in tune with myself...and yes, would definitely love to be on a farm for a tad

My uncle owned a farm while i was growing up. In the summer I did spend time at his house wi th my cousins and we all had chores to do.Oh my gosh ...I so miss those times. we had so much fun even tho we did so much work. The food at their home was always natural and homemade unlike what we eat today. Thanx terilee...you just brought back some very fond memorys. Boredome was not in our vocabulary.

Two years on the farm -- from Chicago to a farm on the desert in California where my stepfather was an irrigator. My sister and I had fun on the farm. It wasn't a cattle farm, just crops. We did have chickens, dogs and cats. My sister and I swam in the reservoir, caught polliwogs, rode on a combine, I learned to drive a Jeep and got to drive a tractor once just for fun. Yeah, sis and I would play in the fields of maize, climb nearby buttes and whatever we did, as I recall it was fun. I'm glad to be in the city as an adult.

Two words you used that I haven't heard in ages. Combine and Buttes. Daddy called his combine a 'bankout'. I never knew why and the Buttes of California hold a lot of memory for me. Thanks for the memories.

Yea, takes a lot of work xxx. More work than most people are willing to do. The fresh food is the biggest plus.

I live in an "urban jungle", where it is mostly buildings all around me. There are no more large scale commercial farms here in my country due to space constraints. The closest I have come to living in a farm is when I was in Western Australia more than 10 years ago. I spent two days and nights at an actual working farm belonging to an Australian family comprising the husband, wife, their grown up son and their farm dog. We were the only visitors there. We stayed in a farmhouse adjacent to the host family. During meals, we ate with the host family at their dining table. In the day, the hosts will drive us all around their farm and orientate us to the various farm activities they usually carry out in various seasons. I remember catching yabbies in several of the ponds there, and had them for dinner. On the second morning when we woke up, we were excited by the appearance of hundreds of sheep surrounding our farmhouse. I remember on the 2nd day there, the host drove us to a hilltop, set up a table, brought out the food and we had an outdoor lunch feast among the bushes and trees. It was a really enjoyable and memorable stay for us, even though we only experienced farm stay for 2 days.

We were both born and raised on farms, and after a lot of years working elsewhere, have returned to work on a cattle ranch. We watching baby calves running and jumping across the green pastures now.

i'm one of the lucky ones whose lived on a farm all my life expect a few yrs when i was only little. we've got sheep, horses, dogs, cats, a couple of cows one which i've got to get of a neighbours property on firday. plus my dad now has got some turkeys. i live on a dairy farm, and milk the cows. the thing that gets me annoyed is the real city people, the one who have no idea about life outside the city they don't understand what us country people are going through. we're in australia and in the still very dry part!!!! we've finally got some rain in the last few days, about an inch so far. so any one who wants to send us some rain please send it down to us. have a good night/day louise

i spent time on a farm when i was a little child. my mother's hometown is in a small country and my family used to spent our holiday in the village. sometimes i lived in the village for two months. i and my cousins were happy when we played together. we often played hide and sick on the farm and went swimming in the river. it is so exciting but a little bit dangerous. and we often went on farm to pick vegetables and some more play. we always got very dirty when we went home but we were happy. it's my best time in the childhood.
