Calling Creative Writers!

March 24, 2008 12:31pm CST
How do you feel about sharing your work? Do you write just for yourself? Do you share your work with close friends or family, or a wider audience? Do you post your work online regularly? Do you belong to any writing groups? I've been invited to join a small women's writing circle and tomorrow night is the next meeting. I've written something pertaining to the theme given, but it's so personal that I'm too shy to share it! I've never been good at sharing what I've written. I remember when I was a kid, my teacher read out a poem I'd written and I was so embarrassed that I burst into tears. I'm not sure what to do!

Actually before, I primarily wrote as a form of release for myself, & on occasion would write for select friends & family members...but my sister introduced me to an online writing community http://www.onestopwriteshop.com & it has been a truly wonderful site for writers since it helped revive my love for writing and to be more open to critiques for it (because indeed, knowing other people's views of your writing helps ALOT)being a member of this site made me braver in sharing my work some more--I even won 3rd place in the Grand Opening contest! and now, I'm seriously considering on working on to have my poetry published (though I still haven't the guts for reading them out loud to audience, this is indeed a HUGE step for me) do check out the site and see what I mean (they also offer classes and so much more like a blog and forums) & the members & owners are really great people! hope to see you there! =)

Hi again =) I have to agree with you that there is that risk of somebody plagiarizing your work but then, posting your work online also does make you reach a wider audience--I guess I just cross my fingers that nobody does plagiarize my work! enjoy your day =)

That does sound really good. I'm quite apprehensive about posting on the net though as it's so easy for someone to take your work and pass it off as their own.

Well Phaedra, if its nerves or you feel uncomfortable then maybe you shouldn't leap into this. The feeling is natural, you're not alone in it. However, there are times you should just go all out on it. Scatter the doubt and place confidence in your work. There was a discussion on mylot a few months back that asked for people to write creative fiction. I too felt embarrassed, weird... but I said, you know what I'll give it a try. It actually felt great to do that, even got the best response for being so creative it seemed. I wanted to follow up on the story, or maybe make other ones but things like this get shuffled around (plus I'm still working on other creative fiction and my RPG too O_O) Phae, just relax a bit. I know its just me talking, but really, just relax and believe in your work.

Thank you for your advice. I was pushed into doing it really and if left to myself I doubt I would have done it. I was incredibly uncomfortable and I think I'll be sure not to write something so personal for the next group. I'm proud of myself for doing it though. Congratulations on conquering your fear as well.

Writing is such a personal process, that it oftentimes becomes difficult to share your pieces with others. I am a member of another writing site where I post my fiction peieces and receive instant feedback from other members. They also have a live online radio show where you can call in and read. It's a great way to share your work yet still retain a measure of anonymity. PM me if you are interested.

Hi Doll I'm one of those 'let it all hang out ' hippy people. I'm not very shy and I could jump up and speak about myself to a huge crowd. Things like that do not bother me. xoxoxoxoxox

I still care what people think of me. People I respect and admire anyway. I did it though! I read out something that was very personal and difficult and I got a really good response. I'm really proud of myself! xxxx

Hello there Phaedra, as of now, my current writing niche would be for Triond, (the url for my articles are at my profile page), writing blogs for multiply and also my blogspot. Apart from mylot, that is. I'm also actively writing reviews and have gotten pretty good amount there and I'm kind of active in the social networking friendster as well. I think that without writing, I would go berserk and insane, ha! Because I find freedom expressing myself through my writings and it doesn't necessarily have to be heard. I just love the phase of life that I went through and in comparison to pictures and writings to prove my point and to describe my life further, I would prefer to write. It's true that they said that a picture says a thousand words but I still think that the power of the word rules anytime. Have a good day posting and take care of yourself.

My advice is to feel the fear and do it anyway.

i have written stuff and sold it, but have never went to any writing groups, although it would be a great influence i think. Also, for me, it would be hard to get to, plus i hate reading out loud! lol

Congratulations! A published writer! That's impressive! It's not a difficult place to get to for me, but the idea of reading my work out loud absolutely terrifies me!
