What's in a name?

My question to all the parents out there is how did you come up with your childs name? Did you go through the meanings? did you make sure that the full name sounded ok and didn't sound funny? Did you make sure to pick names that other kids wouldn't be able to make fun of? Did you keep it a them like your name began with and A and so you named all your kids with an A for the first name?

This is such a subject that has so many different answers. For us personally, we didnt' want a common name but at the same time didn't want to make up a name like a lot of parents seem to be doing these days. Our daughter was named after meaningful people in our lives. Luann Grace - Lu being from my grandfater, Ann my grandmother, Grace his grandmother. We love the name and know its uncommon but not to the point that people won't know its a name. Actually the name Luann was at its most popular in the 1940's. Thats fine with me I don't want my daughter to go through school like I did with people always asking which Erika. For my husbands first two they were named after people too. His son Patrick Edward - Patrick for my husbands birtday (st. pattys day) and Edward after my husband (after his grandfather). His daughter is Brianna the female version of Brian and Shawn for her uncle that passed away young. So we have: Patrick Edward Brianna Shawn Luann Grace I love all there names and if we have another that babies name will be named after some one too.

I wanted my children to have original names that weren't used frequently and away from family members names so that no one can be upset we didn't use their name and there were no hard feelings. My first child Kaitlynn meaning pure and brianna meaning noble, strong, virtuous. my second child Tyler - I liked the name but it meant tile layer. which wasn't even thought of .. but Alexander meant defending me and I liked it. My third child ws name Eric- eternal ruler Bradley broad wood. I honestly just like the name bradley and how it flowed with eric. my fourth child was named Hailey - hay clearing or hay woods and Nickole- victory of the people and my last daughter was my miracle child was named Katrina because I loved the sound of the name and it means- pure Jeannette -god is gracious and it was the french form of Jean ..

Its funny how people have such differnt ways of naming there kids. Me trying for family names and you just the oppsite. My great grandparents were a true influance in my life and even though they are gone now still are. I am proud to have been able to incorporate there names into my daughters. Every ones different. I have a friend that literaly made up her daughters name... I can't say it let alone try to spell it.

Both my kids have a name that is a combination of my inlaws names but gives a real full meaning. Infact their names are unique and lovely to call too. So they were never made fun of.

Thank you for your information. I didn't want to use family names because I didn't want either family to think that they were getting slighted if I didn't use there family so I opted for names that were no where near the family. LOL!!!

My daughter's name is Stephanie Danielle, and my son is Jordan Philip. Those are everyday kind of names that no one would have a reason to make fun of, I hope not. I also think that there is a hidden meaning in a name and if you believe in numerology and such, a name can either give you luck or curse you. My kids have good names but my name is awful and I am sure it has something to do with how I am today, a mess LOL. I was also named after my great grandmother killed in the Holocaust, bad choice on my parents parts... I could be carrying some of that karma for all I know.

Interesting that you put in numerology into consideration. How does it work and how can you tell if a name is a good name or bad name .. ?

Well sweety when i was having my son his Dad said he had always dreamed of calling his son Neil as his best friend when he was young was killed by a bus in front of him,I couldn't argue with that could I? I did say that I would prefer it to be spelt Niall as that is the original spelling and his dad agreed. If he had been a girl I loved the name Niamh , I had heard it on a visit to Ireland and always loved it, he was a boy so niall it was! When I had my daughter we considered other names but I always came back to Niamh - if she had been a boy I wanted to call him after my Grandad but it was far too commom a first name in our family and could have got quite confusing so I had decided to use my Grandads surname , Fulton as a forst name, This time she was a girl so she was called Niamh! It was nothing to do with spellings or anything like that just pure coincidence! xxx Niall means champion and Niamh means radiant one

I love my name, but no one can spell or pronounce it, so when I picked out my daughter's name my only goal was that it was both spellable and pronounceable! I actually had a hard time finding a name I liked. At first I wanted Madeleine but I couldn't find a middle name I liked with it, and I did want the full name to sound good. So we wound up with the other name I really liked, Emma. Easy to spell and say! But then we decided to adopt from China, and to keep her Chinese name as a middle name, so now she has a middle name no one can spell or pronounce. Oh well!

I know what you mean I wanted it to sond and flow nicely and for everyone to be able to pronounce my childs name. But that was great that you kept her chinese name as her middle. Very nice.

actally, almost all the parents will give their children a pick name. usually, the pick name shows the love of their parents, while in some other conditions, the pick name come from some important or funny things.

With my first child, I wanted a very Indian name (that was easy to pronounce....well my husband insisted on that part after hearing all the names that I came up with!) and I did check the meanings too. But our son was born on a special Indian festival which happens to be the birthday of an Indian God. We had already chosen a name...and all the other names that came up to signify the God's name was very common. A relative then added another word to the word we had chosen and that name referred to the God and had a very spiritual significance too....and we chose the name for him. It's a little long...so he's still called by the name we first chose....but for the records he has the longer name. For the second one, we needed a name that would have some relation with the first one's name. But before we could rack our brains...our older son came up with a not so common name which meant the same as his first name. It's short and sweet...and not too difficult or uncommon that he would be teased. We loved it...and since our second one was a boy too...we named him that! Their names don't begin with the same letter....though siblings having names where the first letters are the same is quite common in India.

My sister's name and mine start with the same letter 'S'. Most of my cousins have their names starting with the same letter. And since I teach at a school, I've noticed most siblings have their names starting with the same letter. Even though my kids don't have their names starting with the same letter, I find myself being surprised when I find siblings whose names do not begin with the same letter (it's that common in India...atleast in our generation). lol...tell me how tough it is to chose a name which your spouse agrees to! I remember going through thousands (literally!) of names for my first born...and making a list of a few hundreds that I thought were nice and my hubby vetoed every single one!!!!

Interesting I never knew that having the first letter in siblings names where common over there. I have a friend and all her kids first names are all A's. LOL!!! I thought wow that is dedication. I could have never done that I would have been driven crazy .. LOL!! I have 5 kids and to find that many that I like with the same first letter. I had a hard enough time trying to find names that sounded good together that I liked and that my other half agreed on. LOL!!!

naming your child - Choose wisely! You're child could love or hate you when they get older!
My mom wanted to name me a horrible name and I thank my brother soooo much for changing that!! LOL She was going to name me Melanie Suzette. UGH!!!! I can deal with Melanie but NOT the Suzette name. Luckily she asked my two brothers what to name me if I were a girl and one of my brothers spoke up and said why don't you name her Mary? Mom asked him why Mary and he said because it's the name of the mother of Jesus. With that she named me Mary Beth for she couldn't think of anything else that would go with Mary. So now that my name is Mary Beth, my husband's name is Jimmy. Don't we sound like the Walton's? LMAO!!

Both of my daughters' names have special meaning. Destiny Marie - Destiny was obviously because of Fate, I believe everything happens for a reason and she was meant to come into my life at that given time. Marie is my mom's middle name, and I kept the family tradition since I have my grandma's middle name. Serenity Jayde - Serenity was named after the Serenity prayer, and I was going through a time in my life that I needed COURAGE. Jayde was chosen because it started with a J, and that came from the middle initial of her great grandparents, and of course me! I believe naming a child should take a lot of time and make sure it's really what you want. :-)

I chose classic names and the middle names of both of my kids are someone in the family. Alexandra Miriam is my daughter. Miriam was my ex hubby's mom who passed away before my daughetr was born. Christian Scott- (go figure I'm not a Christian) is my son. Scott is his dad's name. I never really cared if they sounded right together. I knew that I didn't want my kids to have really popular names like kaylie or tyler or something like that. I did want them to be different but not so different that they could never learn to spell them or people couldn't pronounce them.

you want to hear a funny thing. when I had my daughter Kaitlynn I was told how pretty it was and how that was barely used a year later and guess what that was the name to have. grrr. The same with Tyler after he was born it became popular. I hate that you look for different and get the norm becuase then everyone starts using it. Grrrr.

Thank you. I tried to spell each name a little different except for the boys. Like I spelled Hailey's middle name Nickole. instead of nicole. LOL!! and Katrina Jeannette with 2 N's and 2 T's. LOL!! I'm a complicated type of person I guess.

Redfeather even though this is none of your business I feel the need to point out the sarcasm in my original post. Bella and I are friends. I am the one whose first name begins with an A so all of my childrens names begin with an A as well. But thanks for taking the time out of your day to tell me you disapproved of my comment. Twit.

i don't know why you would consider this a stupid thing. people have a lot of reasons for namin their children the way they do - my ex-husband and all of his sisters start with a b, and i think that is ok - in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - the boys had biblical names in alphabetical order - great if you plan to have many kids...

My first born was named after my favourite popstar at that time, and a lad I had once had a crush on. My second child is called Aaron and he came from the fact that it was going to be my hubbys name but his mum changed her mind at the last minute and also because I like elvis presley, so I took it from the middle name of him. My third boy, I cannot quite remember how we chose his name but I know he was baby no name for about the 1st week of his life, and my daughter is named Georgia-Mae and her name was the only name in the book that I liked, plus I had watched a programme on tv and it was american and one of the states was Georgia and I just thought it was a lovely name.

Nope I picked names that i liked the sound of for my first child and her middle name is after my nan, I wasnt too fussy about names if im honest A name is something you grow to forget if you know what i mean, its just something that your brain recognises but doesnt think much else about when you are older. My son was named owen after the wrestler owen hart and his middle name is taken from my granfathers name.

First we went through names that we liked the sound of, and weeded out the ones that we didn't agree on. Then my husband said that it had to be a bible name. Our oldest son is Christian with the middle name Adam. We both liked the first name. I picked the middle name because Adam was the first man and my son was our first child. Our second child was Nathan. Not particularly my favorite name, but my husband didn't seem to like anything else. So I picked Joel for the middle name. I liked the sound of it. Our daughter got the name Abigail Faith. I liked the name Abby (it was my best friend's nickname) and my husband liked it because it meant Father's joy or something like that. I'm not sure how we came up with the Faith part. I think we heard it and decided it flowed well with her name.

Dear friend, I hope a name indicates lots of impact on others who call it and who use it. As some people put names of famous people, some put names of their grant parents or loved ones. Still I hope a good name is always selected especially for their loved ones. It is another part of identity too. Hope some names are too good and rare which attracts others may to they too might be able to put a new name or same to their loved ones. Names can be of nick names which is given some special values too. Hope names do has many many impacts for others.

I know it sounds corney but I was having a hard time coming up with a name I liked and could carry on into adulthood. One night I was sitting in a busted up s-10 pickup waiting for my kids dad to come out of work when I started star gazing. I started recalling the last time I really paid attention to the stars. It just so happened the last time was when Halley's comet was able to be seen. So I named her Haley. And now when I think about it I wonder if she will ever realize it lol.

i chose my first son's names based on two friends who helped me a lot through my high-school pregnancy. my mom objected to the first name, and as it did not flow as well when i reversed the two, and i was not willing to drop one - i ADDED a first name. so now he has 4 names, when you count his surname. then when i was expecting my second, i knew he also had to have as many, so neither would feel slighted. my sister followed this same tradition with all four of her children - i was very proud. it seems to provide a little bit of family cohesiveness, as well as providing them all with some uniqueness, without weirdness in comparison to their peers.
