Do you guys think the modern day United Nations could stop the next World War 3? I personally think that they could if they tried hard enough but I am sure there are some other opinions out there too...

The UN was not able to stop the United States from proceeding to go to war with Iraq, so how the hell can they stop another world war. It's unfornutate that these things happen. All the while, I thought that UN has the power to create a peaceful environment by averting cases of war. But the recent tide of events - the US branzenly going to war with Iraq, and in the end having not found any other their allegations of them housing weapons of mass destruction - seem to say otherwise.
UN has a long way to go. If we are really serious in detering another instance of world war, then we will have to give UN more powers to wield, not just sanctions on erring countries and all. UN has to be a force of its own. UN should be able to veto a certain country's decision over and against another country. UN must have a military force of its own. UN has to have a power to intervene over wars and conflicts. At the rate UN is doing nowadays, I doubt if it coudl avert another world war.

No way. There is no motivation and its controlled by only a few powers that can't agree. The only thing the UN is good for is agreeing AIDS and poverty are bad.

I think they could... if UN is absent long back we would have all killed each other. I think we all need to contribute something so that UN gets stronger and stronger and no single country is able to hijack the agenda of UN.
