Who here works the "standard" 9am-5pm job? And what do you do?
I work at a bank and the hours are usually 8am-4:30pm, except Fridays I work until 7:15pm. I usually work about 30 hours a week at the bank. My boyfriend is an overhead linesman for a gas and electric company and works 7am-3:30pm, but is on call most of the time as well and usually works over 40hrs/week.
I just quit my one bartending job for many reasons (one of which was that the new manager turned out to be a thief, but that's a different discussion...) but my hours there were Thursdays 6pm-midnight and Saturday 6pm-2am. Good money and now I need to find another bartending job so I can have extra money after paying my bills!
When I was working my bar job and at the bank, I would often work over 50 hours in a week. I guess this amount of hours is pretty typical these days. What do you think?

I worked standard hours when I was in America. At my full time job, I was working 7-3:30 M-F and at my part time job, I worked between 4 and 12 at least three days a week and as many as five. I was working 60-80 hours a week and not making ends meet. I quit both jobs in August 2006 to take an ESL teaching job in China. Last year I worked between 20-26 hours a week teaching oral English with little time spent outside of class. This year I have been teaching 10 hour a week and with the oral classes this term, there is very little out of class time, but with the writing classes I had last term I spent 10-15 hours a week correcting papers. That sure beats what I was doing before.

Hi there. Nowadays my working time is 8:30am till 5:30pm with one hour break from 1pm to 2pm. But on Friday, I finish early at 5pm. So I work around 40 hours weekly. But the thing is that it took me 2 hours to reach my office. So every week, I have an extra 20 hours added to my working hours.

WOW! That's a rough commute! Sorry to hear that -- you must really like your job or it must pay well or SOMETHING to drive so much each week.

Actually I'm a trainee with the company. And they want us to rotate around different places to get used to the company's operation. So for the time being I will have to spent 2 hours to reach my working place. Hopefully after I get a permanent placement, things will changed. Cheers.

Oh, that's not to obad then. Most times when I have been trained it is usually further than the actual permanent workplace as well.

Well sweety my partner normally works from 7am til 3pm one week and 3pm til 11pm the next with some overtime here and there - mainly weekends. the last few months though he was working 12 hours a day 7 days a week, so that was 84 hours a week at least not including his hours travelling! Luckily this ended last week and we are almost back to normal! I used to work about 20 hours a week but my hours would be varied to suit my bosses at the pub and my partners schedule so that one of us were always with the children! I haven't been able to work since last April but i am hoping to be fit enough to get back to work sometime this year - my bosses have still kept my job open and keep in constant touch! xxx

Yep that was all one job sweety! Luckily the 12 hours have stopped now and he was off this weekend too thank Goodness - it was so nice! The sonogram (we call it ultra sound) is of one of my 2 kids when I was carrying them! I just thought it suited my username and what I consider the biggest blessing - being a Mummy! Thank you sweets! xx

Are you expecting?, as your avatar is a sonogram picture. Best wishes for you and the children. Hope the scheduling gets easier for you!

I got you beat and I only have one job. Other than online stuff, that is. I work at a state mental hospital. My actual hours are 6:45am - 3pm. But I get mandated to work evening shift too. This happens about every other or every few days. I typically work at least 60 hours in a week probably. Sometimes I get lucky though and we get a break from the mandates. The only problem is you get used to all that money and then you can't go back to only working 40 hours a week. It's a different lifestyle.

Yeah, once you bartend and then go to a "regular" job, the pay really sucks.

I have always hated the standard 9-5 job, because everyone does it and when you are trying to get to work in the rush hour it's a nightmare so I always choose jobs that are shiftwork so that I can avoid the rush hour and be at work when others are off and vice versa. I used to work evenings which was wonderful I am NOT a morning person and I like my lie ins so I would always work the later shifts. So I would do 1pm-9pm and I wouldn't do five days straight I would split the week up. I loved working weekends and had two days off in the week, when everyone else was at work, the shops would be great and empty during the working week!

but when I started there I had to work the 4pm to midnight shift, this was customer service.

I work as specialist, my working is 8 hours, with 1 hour break giving me 9 hours time at work.. i usually extend in some days but i can have this for offset if i choose on other dates. i can go home early or come to work later.. i just have to make sure that i dont have works left.
We have overtime pay but we always are not filing for that cause it will only go mostly to tax! i hate it when that happens it is really unfair.. taxes are ballooned and we worked for it :(

Hi Bethany. I have a desk job at a large company. My hours are mostly 6AM-2:30PM. However some days I have meetings that are in the afternoon. They often last past 2:30 so I work until 4:30 some days. All in all I consider my hours normal but there are alot of people who don't.

My days are usually 7:30am to 6:00pm. They can vary a bit too, but yes they are 10-11+ hour days. I also have a couple of random projects I'll take on which tack on hours during weekends (but they've largely diminished). So I'm hovering around 55-60 hours a week.
About your 50 hours, Those hours are a bit rough but they seem to be getting typical.

I work from 8:30-4:30 and get 40 hours a week from being at work. (i tend to just stay at work for lunch because home is a 40 minute drive away)
My boss is pretty flexible about me being late if i'm needed for my sister or for calving. I also tend to take extra work home with me lately adding usually 4 or 5 hours to my work week which i've been banking for extra vacation time in the summer.

I work in a supermarket which is open 8.30am-8pm Mon-Sat (it did used to be 6pm on a sat but the powers-that-be have now changed it!!) and 10-4 on sun so my hours vary on which staff are worrking. I tend to do 10-8 though have done on the odd occasion 8.30-8 which can be a nightmare!!!
Though the manager has cut hours down this week due to his budget but I reckon its because hes got the week off. Ive noticed that he has loads of staff when hes working and when the assistant manager is working we struggle with staff!!
I tend to do about 30-40 hours a week normally!
