I'm pretty content with Dell, to be honest.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the Latitude series of notebooks, which are usually solid as a rock in performance, also tend to get support that falls within North American borders (USA, Canada, Mexico, etc).
If you buy a Latitude, do yourself a favor: Opt for the Next Business Day On-Site service and CompleteCare. I have many horror stories that were averted by things like this.
I've even called my own support queue (*ding* I work for Dell :)), with an eight year old Latitude CPx, and I've got the excellent service I expect from us with an unusual query about the LCD panel in said notebook. :)

I've only had 3 computers in my life, the first I can't remember what it was but it was really old, a Compaq and now a Dell laptop. I was happy with all of them and I think it really depends on what you mainly use the computer for or want to use it for.

HP maybe good for desktops but they are definitely bad for laptops. There have been power issues, motherboard issues, and power supply problems. One glaring issue was the prong in back of the laptop breaking on normal laptop/portable use. Sad.
I can't say which is the best computer but you certainly want to do better than HP. HP customer service is horrific too.

Going by PC magazine HP is the worst computer company out there and Dell and Gateway is the better ones. But HP/Compaq computer are cheaper but for a good reason. These results came from the computer itself and the support the company gave. Yea you need to look at support too to make sure they will be willing to help when something goes wrong. I have alway had dell computers not particular reason why I choose Dell of gateway or anyone else. But I do remember in college we had Gateway computers and the motherboards started melting. Gateway said ship them back and we will have you new computers in a month or so. Imagine a technology college going without computers for a month or so. They eventually just shipped the college the new motherboards and the college help put them in. It took months to get enough motherboards in. A little company made them for gateway so it was hard for them to keep up production of making new motherboards for the new computers and the replacements. Oh by the way you pretty much have to take the whole computer apart to get the motherboard out so it was a task to swap them out.

I have an HP and I am very happy with it. One thing you might want to know is HP has an excellent tech support. I had to contact them and they went through several things with me to find my problem even though my computer is no longer under warranty, this was online chat tech support. I do have an extended warranty but that is handled through the place where I purchased the computer and I didn't realize that at the time. I contacted Office Depot after being told what the problem was by the HP tech and the part which failed is going to be replaced next week. I highly recommend both HP and Office Depot.

I admit that Dell has the top market out there.Dell computer is cheaper. However, it is not that good in term of quality.Fortunately,Dell gives very good technical support to customers. So, depend on budget,if you are looking for cheaper computer then try consider buying Dell.If you have more budget then you can think of other brand.

I have had three computers and that covers over a 10 year period. The first two were bought on the back of PC plus magazine recommendations and reviews. They were comparatively small companies - one was Multlplex - I don't remember the name of the other right. Anyway, the point is I had no problems with either over a long period of time however both companies folded shortly after I bought the PC's so product support was lost.
This is something that may be a concern for you. My current PC is a Dell and I doubt that they will be going out of business (unless my curse works again lol) and again I have had no issues. I bought this PC from a Dell dealer on ebay so I got it pretty cheap.
I would imagine the components that go into a PC are all pretty similar these days so it is a case of finding the spec that matches your requirements and budget best.
Good luck with your search and hope you get some good recommendations.
PS the company I work for runs over a 100 Dell PC's too.
