Will you go through the express lane at the grocery if you have 15 items and the sign reads 12 items or less?

I would not, although when the other lines were few, the saleslady allowed those who had a little more than 12 items or less to go through, but that seldom happened. As it were, I would not do that. The line is designed for those who do not have much time to fill their shopping carts and can only get a few items. It is not for those who had time to go down all the aisles.

I do not like going through the express lane if I have more than twelve items. It would not be right. Thanks for the best response.

I often find it that it is quicker to go to a regular lane than it is to stand in line at the express lane.

No, I couldn't have the courage to do that, I don't want the cashier to think I am not an educated person not to understand that simple "12 items or less" sign.

Yes, but only if the cashier waves me over and says it is okay for me to go through. I've only had this happen once though. Lucky for me the cashier knows me as I go to this store often. Her lane was empty and as she saw that I was done shopping, she let me go through.

Never tried it. I am not that lucky. I'd get up there, put my stuff on the belt. And they would say excuse me, but you have 3 items too many. Please move over. I can see it now.

good question, I can't do it, no matter what, there is some kind of force field that will not allow me to do that, maybe because I've been behind a person that has or because I've been the cashier in the express lane, whatever the reason if I did I think I would feel guilty all day

Oh, I know what you mean - and on occasion I have been directed to the express lane by a store manager - rather than let me stay in line behind someone else - they want to utilize all registers... then it happens someone with a couple of items comes up behind me and I am humiliated for being in that lane.

I hate when they do that, but what I do is if someone comes behind me with like three or four things in their hands I just tell them to go ahead of me, but that is it if the cashier put me there I feel one person getting cuts is enough, that would be my good deed to make up for it, and plus I have to get out of the store someday

It depends on what time of day it is, how many people are standing around waiting in line, and mainly, do I have 15 different items? or do I have several items that are the same. If that's the case, I don't hesitate to save a little by going through the express lane. I love going grocery shopping, the less time I'm there, the less I spend. So in my case, time is money. If I stand in line, I'll think of something else I might need to have, like a drink.

yes, and they make sure to put those little drink coolers at the lane for ease - I watched a news type show once which stated that same items count as 1... so 6 cans of beans counts as 1 item when you go through the lane.

I did it once accidentally, and I realize once the cashier started cashing my stuff. I felt really bad. I would not conciously do it. It is wrong.

I normally won't if I have too many items. But if it isn't busy and there is no one waiting in line I have done it before. I went through 10 items of less with with 13 items the other day. I didn't hold anyone up though. I wouldn't do it if it was going to cause delay to anyone. Brightest Blessings, Mari

Not normally, no. Our signs usually say 20 items or less, and if I have say 23, I usually go to the regular lines. However, if those 20 items or less lines have no waiting, if the clerk is just standing there, I'll go in that line. Usually they will motion to come over there anyway.

right, they do that here too - but then I always dread it because it is bound to happen someone with only a few items will come up behind me and you see them sizing up and down my cart and making a very long and dramatized sigh.

Normally no. I think it's rude to break the rules. I have gone in those lines before but only because the cashier said it was okay (there were only two lines open). So I suppose if the casher says okay about it because of there being only a few lines opened, then yes. However under normal circumstances I would say no because it's for people who have 12 items or less. :) Pablo

Only if the cashier invited me to go through that line. I hate when people go throught the express checkout when they have a cart full of items, so I try really hard myself to follow the rules.

I usually will NOT go through the line that has 12 items or less if I have more than 12 items. I worked that type of line before and you would be surpriaed how many items some people will come through it with. It the lines are very long, I might, but I am usually not in that big of a hurry that I need to.

I actually do go sometimes because I want to get out of there fast. But whenever I go to my supermarket and I start putting my stuff on there the woman says that it's closed. But how can it be closed if the computer is on and she's right there with her working apron on and not doing anything all? So that really gets me frustated and that happens a bunch of times.

oh, that rots! she did not have a closed lane sign up or anything?

She doesn't have anything up at all. And sometimes she is doing the lottery thing for some people and she doesn any sign but a lot of people get in line to check out their items. And they wait there for a long time. Then by the time that she finihes working on the lottery thing for a person she sees that people are online for checkout and says that she's closed. How messed up is that. So there's no point in even going there anymore.

I am always driving someone crazy by counting my items in the cart. Espeially at Walmart. I feel the same about those lanes as I do about handicapped parking. 'If it does not apply to you, don't use it'.
@tentwo67 (3382)

I certainly agree with you about the handicapped parking, but if there's no one in the express line and I have just a little more than the limit I don't really have a problem with it.

If there is no one in line, I will ask the cashier, if they say fine, then I will go through, if not I won't.

i think that as long as i'm fairly close to the limit, then i will go to that cashier. but i've found that even though it is the "express" lane, its never really all that speedy. and if the cashier has a short line, i've found that they will guide you to come to them even if you have more than the sign says. most cashiers have a guideline that the store has then stick to as to how many items per hour they are expected to ring up. so a lot of cashiers don't mind as long as it is a few items.

If I see thesign and I know I have more than twelve I will go to another lane but sometimes you get stuck in a line before you realize you have more than twelveitems and I will just stay there and let it go and if someone makes a fuss I will say move out of the way so I can get out and I will gladly move to another line so otherwise why a fuss over three lousy items specially if they are small too boot

I agree, and it could easily happen that a small item was missed being under a larger item in the cart while you were tallying up your totals.

We do our groceries weekly. Every Saturday, it becomes a sort of family activity. My husband, my child, my brother and my housemaid goes with me to the grocery. Because it's a week's supply, the items I buy will surely exceed that of the required quantity in the express lane. It's embarrassing to the other customers if you go to the express lane but you have more items than the required. So I never do that. But I must confess that I have violated that in a way. When I'm really in a hurry or there is really a long line in the regular lanes, I get a little help from my husband and brother or even my housemaid if necessary. I divide the items into several carts or baskets so that each cart contains only the required quantity for the express lane. I assign each cart to them and have them pay for it.

oh, I do that sometimes in another way - lets say there is a limit of 1 special item price with a minimum of $10 purchase. Well, if I have $30 of items in my cart I will have dh take $10 worth to get the special item, and son as well - and then I also get the special item with my ten dollar purchase. though, if I only want one of the special items I will not do such a thing, hehe.
