Will Pearl compete with Java

I don't think PERL should be compared to java. Perl is a scripting language. Java is a compiled language. Both of them have their own use.

PERL is a scripting language i agree but these days with the advent of JAVA applets, Scripts, server pages PERL is loosing its status as CGU. So will PERL compete with JAVA i say yes not now but in future when security becomes prime importance.

While the two do have some common ground (light web sites, simple shell scripts) the two are mostly unaffected by each other.
Perl is currently under fire from Ruby, Groovy, Python and the like but I would guess it will keep hopping along for some time yet.
Java is currently under fire from C#, but the world is large enough for them both to play and the current push towards SOAs mean they can co-exist in the same infrastructure.
