Have you or would you ever go dumpster diving? I have a couple of friends that have done it and got great stuff. I paint old windows and have on occasion went to a construction site and asked if I could go through them to pick one or two out but I have never actually done this. A gal I work with has tons of really good stuff she has gotten from other people's trash and dumpsters beside houses that are going to be demoed...so would you if you saw something neat or in good condition?

I did that only once. A neighbor of mine threw away her 8th grade yearbook for some reason. Well, the yearbook was at the top of the pile of garbage anyway so I took it because it had a picture of my neighbor in it and I liked her.
Well, imagine my surprise when I realized the yearbook came from the same school my cousin went to at the time! My cousin was in that yearbook a few times so that was a bonus!

Yeah, and the coolest thing is, it is still in really good condition.

I have never gone dumpster diving before. I've heard of lots of people who like to do it, but I've never tried it myself. I guess I'm not as brave! lol I would feel a little bit grossed out actually getting things out of the trash, but if it was just something that someone was giving away and was in good condition and I thought I could use it, then I wouldn't mind taking it. :)

Yes, I've done it and some of my friends do too. When I do it I try and get stuff that I can resell. Sometimes I get something and keep it for myself.

Here we don't have dumpsters but twice a year we have dump day where you are allowed to take out big items and the garage men will take it. It is usually spring and fall they come. So all the people will have items they don't want out all at the same time. I have gotten stuff like shelves, couches, chairs, stools and stuff from them. Lots of people do it. Many good around with a pick up truck and look through everything and take what they can use. Also I have had people come and take mine. I will even write a note on it saying if it is good or what was wrong with it so that someone may take it. I like it cause it saves it from the dump. All good!

it can be very tempting to find stuff in the trash. I usually resist this temptation thigh because i know i have nowhere to store stuff or time to do anything with it...
I saw a beatiful couch on the side of the road the other day...it made me sad...i wish people woul take advantage of freecycle

I would grab something if it was worth while but I would never dive in and search random dumpsters. My ex used to work for a garbage company and would bring stuff home all the time. I always got many magazines that way a little late but usually still pretty current.

I havent myself gone dumpster diving, but other people have brought me stuff that they found on the street on garbage day that were perfectly fine the people just didnt care to get rid of the stuff properly! Freecycle that stuff people!! lol. I have gone diving behind the local second hand shop.. people just drop stuff off behind there and they are closed on sundays. I think everyone here that hasnt got a lot of money does it. We got a tricycle from there for my hubbys son, and some clothing for me, a few pots/pans. some dishes. lol. We were really low on funding when we first moved out on our own. Now i'd pay for these things if i had the money. :)

I have, on occasion, managed to pick up some wonderful old pieces of furniture from skips or dumpsters. The best has to be a lovely little cabinet which only needed a little TLC to bring it back to perfection.

In the UK we call it "skip ratting". A skip is the big container you hire when you are clearing a house ordoing major renovations.
I have done it and got some good items. we also found a great 1970s side board in our back lane which was waiting for the council drivers to take it to the rubbish dump - so we saved it and it looks great. Retro furniture shops charge a fortune for these items!
A friend got his son a full drum kit in excellent condition from a skip and another friend got a some great fishing gear.
Too much good stuff gets thrown out when it could benefit someone else. We should re-use whatever we can

No, I have never done that...sounds like fun with a bunch of people. I would feel a little cowardly by myself. I have put things out in my front yard with a "free" sign on them and watch as people stop and load things up. If it doensn't seem to go...put a price on it and they will "steal" it...haha (in the middle of the night). The next morning it will be gone. It works. Anyone who does crafts with used windows, old wood etc. and other things...It would really be recycling for the good of the world instead of burning it or throwing it into the dumps...sounds good to me!

Oh I have been cheeky enough to do this many a time. I needed doors for a shed in the garden and spotted some in a skip so knocked the door and asked if I could take them, was walking the dogs I had at the time so paid two local lads to carry them back for me, LOL. I am the original Stig of the Dump someone elses rubbish I can always put to a good use, if not for me for a friend and have been seen many a time strolling down the road with a chair that just needs some sanding and varnish to be as good as new again. I just love it! Ellie :D
