I caught my dog in the cats litter box yesterday. Ok he wasn't using it. My dog was eating it!!! Yes your reading right she was eating cat litter. My husband told me this before but I was like no maybe she was just smelling it or something. But no she's eating it. Is this NORMAL?? because I just think it is down right NASTY and I get sick just thinking about it. OH don't let me for get she likes to eat my rabbit's doos too. Why is she so nasty. I'm getting so pissed off because then she wants to come over and want me to pet her nasty butt and I don't want her near me after that. Am I wrong for feeling like this to. I have her outside changed up I don't even want her in my house. Please help me see the reason why is doing this before I loose my mind.

ok, heres the deal your dog is acting perfectly normal if if ofends you that much, then what you need to do is move the cat box away.
It will take time and you WILL have to deal with it, but the thing you need to do is start moving the cat box one foot at a time ( plan ahead ) to the place that you want it (away from the dog) and move the litter box 1 foot at a time so the cat will follow it and give her some time to adjust, but keep on going every other day or so and when you get it where you want it then every thing should be ok.

Ok thank you so much because I was like what the He** is going on here because she(dog) haven't done it before(to my knowledge) I thought it was because I brought some clumpable wheat litter. But thank you so much I really needed this info. I have 2 dogs and so far the older one does it and the puppy just watches.

My MIL has the same problems with her dogs. Of course, dogs eat their own poo so what do you expect?

For dogs it's perfectly normal. Very few dogs stay out of cats litter boxes, there's undigested food in their poo that they're attracted to and dogs are opportunistic scavengers. Doesn't matter how much or how good food she normally gets, if she finds anything tasty she'll likely eat it. I know it's gross to us humans but to dogs, it's just what they do. They see nothing wrong with it and cannot help themselves. If you don't want her in the litterbox, then keep the litterbox where she cannot get to it. Up higher somewhere that the cats can jump to, or in a separate room your dog cannot get to but the cats can.
Oh, and don't keep her outside. Dogs are social pack animals and know nothing worse than being shut out of their pack (you). It's only cruel to keep a dog outside. Sometimes they may have gross (in our eyes) habits but it's just what it is, it's really not that hard to manage the environment so they don't have that alternative.

Yup, our dogs did it too when they got the chance. We don't have a litter box in the house anymore. Our cat Bandit goes outside to go to the bathroom now. He spends about half the time outside. If he needs to go out he meows and gets let out to do his business.

When I had my dog, she too used to gobble up the cats doo doo as soon as they had done it, it was a race everytime to get to the litter tray first between me and the dog so I could clear it out before she ate it! I do not know why they do it but they do and seem to love it! Then she used to have the nerve of thinking she was going to lick my face after, ha I do not think so.

I don't know why they do that, but yes it seems to be normal for a lot of dogs. My golden retriever used to do it too. We had to put the litter boxes in a different room that he couldn't go into in order to stop him from doing that. You're right, it is really nasty.

I had a dog that did this and the vet told us it is because it's like a perfume to him. The cats eat their food and the dog can smell it LOL. I know it is disgusting but it is normal for some dogs to eat other animal feces. My dog now is a pug and he eats the horse and goat poop too LOL as well as play with it and roll in it. It's just something alot of dogs do.

Oh my. That is nasty. We used to have a dog who would do number two and then eat it right afterwards. That is gross. It is not normal at all even though the vet told us that it is ok for them to do it. The vet said they were lacking something in their diet. You're not wrong for not wanting her to come around you. I didn't either. Our dog finally grew out of eating the poop after we disciplined him for it several times.

This was part of a discussion I started, it is pretty gross and I had gotten a really good reply from a poster about why and the solution.

I don't really know what is rong with your dog but i have to tell this is not the first time i am hearing stuff like this. My sister had a dog and her boyfriend reacted too brutal when she was peeing on the floor...and the next time she had done it after finishing peeing she started licking it off. She was scared but your dog...hmm ...may be begging for attention...or she just likes the taste of it...

ok first it's normal for dogs to do this. They are instictive animals meaning they do what there instincs tell them to. And as for keeping her outside I think thats wrong. Because befor you caught her she was living in the house right? So you were letting her jump up by you, petting her and so forth. All the while she was eating *#@*. You just didn't know. So I think let the dog back in the house. Try a spray bottle with water and when you see her go near the litter box spray her. EVERYTIME
After awhile of getting sprayed she will figure out that thats not aloud. And just to make you laugh do you want to here gross.. My dog wll lick himself then end up literally jacking himself off. No joke he did it in front of my grandma. She didn't belive me untill she seen it for her self:)

Thank you you did put a smile on my face. She's in the house now because i couldn't leave here out there especially because it started raining. Don't get me wrong i love my animals but I thought I was doing something wrong. Plus I had to think we use to have a litter box that had a cover over it and now I have the automatic cleaning one, so its like when she see my cat leave the litter box she goes the running and don't give the cleaner a chance to to clean it sometimes. I guess I'm going to have to find a cover for this litter box too.

Whether or not its normal, it's gross but yes, a lot of dogs do this and there's no stopping it unless you put a gate up where the cat box is. I was told that once a dog gets a taste of the doo they can't stop. To them it tastes like cat food. I know GROSS but it's true. I had a couple of dogs that did the very same thing and I had to put a gate up to the bathroom so the dogs couldn't get in there. Eventually we tried a window screen, the portable kind that you can take out of the window when you want it closed and it pulls apart so to speak to make it bigger or smaller to fit the window but instead we use it to keep the dogs out but it's not as tall as a gate but much easier to step over when needing to use the bathroom.
Now about chaining your dog, I don't agree with that because how would you feel if you were her being chained up. It's not fair at all to the dog for she doesn't know what she's done wrong. I believe in putting your dog in a fenced in yard but never a chain because the dog will be getting less and less attention which is not right. She'll be much better off in another home.
