Yes, this is a question my husband and I ponder over. I want my kids to get organic foods, but my husband prefers local. If it's local, then less time one the road therefore less gas and less pollution. Sometimes local items aren't organic so my kids end up putting things in their bodies that worry me. But the pollution from emission could also contribute to things being put into their bodies. It seems like a war that will never be won.

Hello organic foods are the best but costly, so one has to compromise between health and capacity to buy those items, both you and your husband should discuss and decide accordingly....
Thanks for sharing.

I would go for both if possible and if you have to choose and are thinking about environmental consequences I would go local. That is, unless your kids have health problems that make even minimum exposure to toxins dangerous then you should go organic.

So, how is in between that rock and that hard place? lol I can certainly see both sides of that argument.
You may be interested in reading this: http://drfuhrman.com/faq/question.aspx?sid=16&qindex=2 . The foods he lists is commonly known as "the dirty dozen"...they are the ones that most people will recommend you buy organic when possible if nothing else. Maybe you could compromise and buy those items organic and the other items local.
The poster above mentioned growing your own- that is definitely an awesome idea!! I plan to have a garden here- but I may have to do container gardening this first year.

Growing your own produce is a fun and educational way to involve children in learning about the Earth. My favorite gardening book is "How to Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible on Less Land than You can Imagine". I think it includes container gardening too. It has a quilt on the cover of vegetables.
Also, you can ask your local stores to bring in organic produce. there are also some organic gardeners who deliver food to residents: they bring it to a central place and you pick it up.
Don't give up on the idea of organic. Also - lots of "weeds" in your local area are high in nutrients - just be sure you know what your harvesting - and that no pesticides have been sprayed.

It would be good to be able to feed on organic fruit and vegetables all the year round, and to always buy organic meat too,but the price is prohibitive,we just couldnt afford to do it,it would leave us cash strapped here,so we have to compromise, and use some organic and some ordinary, the theory being that every little bit we do helps in some way or another.
