My computer won´t boot not even in safe mode. Lost....

I´ve tried just about everything to get my computer started, in vain, it keeps going on and off.
This has happened before, but I was able to sort it out by trying the safe mode option. Not this time though.
I have no idea what caused the problem, I was running my spyware when the computer suddenly went mad and started going on and off really fast.
I´m using XP Professional, does anyone here know what might be the reason or had a similar problem?
Thanks in advance.

Well now u installed some new anti spyware program or was that already installed. If this is new install and if u are running the scan for the first time then i suggest to start the computer try to uninstall the antispyware program and reboot the system. If that isnt the Fresh install then there is a possibility of your systems files getting affected with spyware and they might have been deleted.
What is the option u selected for the spyware removal .. is it repair or delete if that is delete then the chance of loosing the system files might have been heavy. So why not just put the XP Professional CD back and select the boot from CD option and Upgrade the system .. i guess u understood what i mean .. rather than a fresh install u will just repair the same old install .. if there are any files missing they will be replaced. I guess that should work for you.
If the case is either of the above and still it doesnt work after doing the both then i suppose you should check ur hardware to make sure that every thing is working properly. If there is a problem with the SMPS it does so happen that you system will be rebooting again and again without letting you to stay on the system or work for long.
Well if nothing works for you please do reply back so that i can just figure out what kind of error it is. I suppose most probably this could help you resolve the issue.

It would be great if I could sort the problem out the way you did.
If only I could get "in" to schedule a boot scan. This might sound silly but I´m thinking of trying to get the mashine going again. I´ve left it alone for 2 days, maybe it will boot this time. See how desperate I am, lol. I have to connect all the hardware like Monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers and USB modem to it again so I hope that there´s a slight chance to get it going. I´ve only got one Monitor and the other hardware I´ve mentioned here, which means connecting and disconnecting each time.

Well there is a chance that your system is affected with virus. As i had faced the same problem a couple of months ago with a USB pen drive. I was just trying to copy some data from my pen drive to the Computer and all of a sudden my computer started acting weird. Later then i installed an antivirus program which checks the system for virus at the time of Boot. I Just scheduled a boot scan and let the system reboot and thats it for my susprise i found out 1600+ files infected with some trojan virus. i just removed all of them and my system started working fine for me :). Hope this can help you out with some thing :)

Sweetie I hope that you have sorted it out
I know when that happened to me I had to totally reformat my Computer because it had a Virus on it and that was 3 years ago since I have the Anti virus that I downloaded after it has never happened again
At the time of it happening I had the Norton Anti virus and I do not like that one at all
Big Hugs to you xxxx

I haven´t sorted it out yet, gabs. Luckily I had an older spare computer. I connected the necessary hardware to it and I´ve been using it for a week now. It´s much slower and works with XP Home Edition but I´m glad I can get some online work done.
The idea of having to reformat the broken PC doesn´t make me feel enthusiastic, but up until now I´ve always been able to fix it whenever there was s.th. wrong. Saved me a lot of money.
Mind you it´s 3 years old and it´s probably time to have it checked by a professional.

I'm so sorry for answering so late, gabs. Been as we don't get any alerts from mylot anymore when someone makes a comment I didn't read this. When you get this, you probably won't remember what my answer is all about.
I'm using the free AVG antivirus version which works fine so far. I've also installed Spybot and CCleaner.
Hugs to you

The rapid start and stop scenario sounds like a PSU related problem.
If this is the case then the computer should start fine after being left alone for a while, but the Power Supply Unit will rapidly start to heat up again and the same situation will occur. What happens is that as soon as the PSU reaches a certain temperature it crowbars, which causes the system to shut down. As soon as the system shuts down it cannot detect the problem and reboots, only to detect the problem and cut out again. This type of problem would cause a rapid boot and cut out cycle and would most likely require the mains plug to be removed in order to stop it.
This can be caused either by a faulty PSU or a faulty device which is drawing far too much power.
If the PSU is not overheating then please try to post more information as to the type of problem.

I am sorry if I did not explain it very well. Yes, PSU means Power Supply Unit, but this is not the power supply from the mains socket.
The cable that you use to connect your computer to the mains runs from the socket on the wall to the back of the computer. The PSU is the unit that the cable goes into on the back of the computer.

Here are a few dumb questions: Does PSU mean power supply? How do I know if the problem is due to PSU?
I´m connected to the same power supply right now with a different computer. It´s been on nearly all day and works fine. I´ve got more programs installed on the other one but still had a lot of free space.

I am so sorry you are having terchnical issues with your computer. I am having some problems with mine today too. I keep getting this error in my mailbox.
HTTP Status 404 - /navbar.jsp
I have no clue what it is. It has to be my ISP though. None of my other sites show it. I use the regular windows XP. What kind of spyware do you use? I use spybot and adaware.
I sure wish I could help but I have no clue either.

Error 404 is page not found, navbar.jsp is navigational bar script. You encounter this error only in your internet browser startup. Don't panic, simply disable or reinstall the active toolbar(s).

It maybe a power supply issue. Your machine also maybe lacking in some other regard (memory/RAM for example, harddrive space for another).
If you can't get it to boot and its not a hardware issue, you need to find your XP installation disc. Load it and let it boot to the installation screen. Hit install and accept the license agreement. After that the CD checks for previous installations of XP and will give a message to attempt to repair the installation. Choose repair and see if that works. This may solve the problem and you do have a chance of keeping your documents (they maybe located elsewhere on C drive though, and there is also the chance you may lose the documents...).

Oh before I forget. Only try the repair scenario after backing up as much as you can to DVDs and external drives. The repair scenario is also unwarranted if this is indeed a hardware issue (as opposed to a software/corrupted file, or spyware/malware issue).

No there is no spy ware problem . There may be hardwar problem of the O/s is corrupted. Before that Let me tell you the problem may happens due to power supply. if the power supply have some problem to distribute the voltage then the system happens like that starts and suddenly restart before go to boot after crossing Bios. if your PC cross the bios screen at startup then try to connect your devices like HDD, ODD , FDD Cables unplug and re plug. clean the memory slot and re install the memory firmly. then start . After that if you found the same problem be sure the SMPS have some problem. in case Windows problem the screen must reach the Safe mode options by pressing F8 key.

Hi dana
To me it seems like a hardware issue , probably the hard disk. When it gets corrupeted the computer switches on and off randomly and u feel helpless. I experienced the same problem before. And i had to reformat my machine. Now its working , but its not in the best condition.Let us know how u fix this issue.
all the best

I use XP too & have lots of errors. I am going to have to take it to a professional soon & get it wiped out & XP reloaded.
I suspect you will have to do the same.

You may want to see if there is a hardware issue. Many times, you will have some sort of cord loose or possible RAM failure causing such problems.
Also, it never hurts to reinstall Windows every once in a while, just MAKE SURE to back up your important files.

i don't know exactly what the problem is but it sounds to me like your computer is heading down hill and kinda fast...i mean i think that you could try and re start it as in put the disc it came with in to make it factory condition again if it did come iwth a disc i know that my computer has messed up several times and i have had to re do that and it takes it back so that it is just like it just has came out of the factory...

if it wont boot up in safe mode then you either need to reinstall or repair xp pro with the cds you originally used or its a hardware issue, possibly your power supply. they are cheap, only like 20 bucks to replace.

i think it's the PSU too.. or it could be some fault in the mother board.. like if it makes a beeeeeeep sound before it shuts down..
I would first try replacing the PSU and check if it works.. if not.. i would Backup all the important files that i have in the computer as you never know it could crash anytime and u could lose information form harddrive it that crashed..

If this is a software (XP problem) then perhaps you need to reformat your computer because you cannot login anymore even in safe mode. Don't forget to backup your data before you attempt to reformat your hard disk.
If you don't know how to perform the solution mentioned above then you need someone with knowledge in computer repair to do this for you.
I hope this well help.

It is really hard to say without seeing your computer, there may be RAM problem, cable problem, or virus which is not allowing to boot properly.
