Sandals. Are socks cool?

Here in the UK we are fast approaching those days where we get out our Summer clothing and pretend that it is warm enough to wear them. I am the sort of chap that likes to get the air to his feet. I tend to wear sandals from late spring until the Autumn unless I have to take tea with a member of the Royal family. Then it is highly polished Oxfords. I never wear socks with sandals however, as I think that looks just hideous. What is your preference for men in sandals. Socks on or socks off?

Socks off, socks off. Why would anyone do otherwise?
Saying that, I think men should think very carefully before venturing out in public wearing sandals. I'm not quite sure what it is, but there's an elusive something which means you can either carry it off .... or you look very, very silly.

I think sandals without socks look a lot better. There is something about socks and sandals that just don't look right.
So for men and women, sandals without socks
Have a great day

How about just NOOOOO! My dad wears socks with sandals, as do many old men but it still looks silly. I suppose if you wear dark socks of a similar colour to the sandals then that is acceptable in our 4-season a day climate. The absolutely worst thing would be to wear white socks with brown sandals. Why would anyone do such a thing?

I so wish guys wouldn't do this. It makes them so unlikeable and embarrassing.
Even worse...imagine if women started to do it? Their sock/sandal wearing husbands would surely have to see the error of their ways THEN???

I didn't know you were from England....too cool...I have family in Liverpool, just not sure where lol. Now for the sandals problem: I think if you have horrible looking feet yes please cover them up, even with sandals but otherwise I think sandals should be worn without socks! As soon as it gets warm I start wearing mine again too, they are so easy to slip on! Tea with the royals, how quaint! May I join you!

In my opinion, men in sandals with socks is a hugh turn off! (LOL) That should seriously be against the law in every country. I think it's downright repulsive and always get a laugh out of it when I see someone wearing socks with their sandals. I suppose it's a reflection of that particular person. I just have to laugh each time I see this as I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm glad you posted this discussion, and I'm even more thankful that you don't commit the crime (LOL) of wearing socks with sandals. The point of wearing sandals is having bare feet! You don't wear socks with sandals, you wear them with shoes where socks are appropriate to keep your feet warm. I've seen girls and women wear socks with sandals as well. It just makes me want to pull them aside and have a tactful chat with them about their sense of style. (LOL) I'm happy to hear it's getting warm in the UK. Here in Michigan (USA), it's starting to show a little spring weather. I'll be in my sandals (without socks!) before long as well! Take care, friend.

I know what you mean, and I'd be screaming the same thing right with you! (LOL) The reason this is such a huge peeve of mine is because when I was in college, we were considered more professional students...women had to wear hoisery at all times no matter what shoes they were wearing. I guess we were considered more top-notch that way. It always bothered me having to wear my cute sandals with those nasty things, especially if the nylon stockings had holes or runs in them! Ugh...fortunately, I haven't worn the silly things since I graduated last year...and I don't intend to for the rest of my life. (LOL) This is an awesome discussion. I'm glad you and I are agreed on this issue!

I wear sandals all year round - and no socks! But then again, I live in Australia, with much milder winters than the UK has (at the moment, that is - wait till global warming takes that out of the equation!).
But I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has asked me "Don't your feet get cold?" or "Aren't your feet cold?"
The simple answer is "No." I sometimes expand on my answer with "I'm a man. Men have better circulation to the extremities than women do." or "The wind doesn't blow down there - it blows up here." or "They don't get cold until I get home and take my sandals off - then I've got to get some slippers or socks on." or "I don't think I'd be able to do it if I lived in Canada or Britain or New Zealand, but here it's easy enough."

I had a friend with a very similar problem to yours, only he was here in the UK. he too wore sandals all year round. Funny thing was though he was a hobby pilot and used to put socks on to place his feet on the rudder bar! Unfortunately he went down when he should have gone up a couple of years ago and is no longer with us. The inquest said nothing about his socks.

You are not old, and unless you wear socks with your sandals, you are not disgraceful. I am so glad to read that you won't. I would have to pretend not to know you if you did. It has got to be the worst look for men in the good weather and makes me just want to rush up to them and cut them off at the knees, so they'll never do it again.
It's like badly designed furniture - it should NOT be allowed to be sold! LOL

I think you are too self critical dear P1ke. But then - I'm a really bad judge. lol As long as no socks, hey, be as disgraceful as you want. Like you I hate the feel of unnecessary restrictions on my perfect feet in good weather and never but never wear socks - any time of year actually. I do go through a lot of moisterizer though! LOL

Up in the north of England it will be some time before we get our summer clothes out, it has been snowing this week!
Am glad to hear that you don't wear socks with sandals, it is unforgiveable. My Dad wears white socks, pulled up!, with his "Jesus sandals" it is just awful.
So, get invited to afternoon tea much do you?

I used to be friends with Diana (not), so I'm afraid they don's talk to me any more :(
It's a whole shame about the Diana thing don't you think, it's dragged on quite long enough, let the poor woman rest in peace. I feel most for William and Harry, don't suppose they will ever get closure.

Bit of a digression from sandals with socks, but always a pleasure to talk to a fellow Brit!

Socks off by a long shot. You just look weird sandals are on your feet to give you some air. Not for socks to block that air off. The reason you wear socks with shoes is because you dont want air on your feet and because you will get blisters and saw feet if you dont. So put it all together and you get yourself one equation.
socks+sandals doesn't go well.

I used to date a guy that wore socks with his sandals. It looked really strange. I guess people do that kind of thing in the UK as I have never seen it in the States. I think it looks weird. If their feet are cold then why don't they just put proper shoes on? It has to be socks off.

Norwegian men have been wearing socks with their sandals for as long as I can remember, and I think it is the most stupid thing ever. And ugly. Now it seems the younger men have started getteing the point of sandals and are skipping the socks. I think it is embarrasing if my man wears socks and sandals - and i do not usually get embarassed easily

Doesn't matter to me. I don't think socks and sandals makes much sense because sandals don't keep moisture out, so if you walk through a puddle your socks will get wet. But if someone else wants to dress that way, well, knock yourself out.

Socks with sandals is completely wrong no matter what part of the world you live in.
I say socks off but only if you take good care of your feet and they aren't all nasty.
If they are nasty, spare us and wear sneakers with socks...if you don't your sneakers will stink! :)
There's my two cents for what it's worth!

oh yes, during summer one wants to let the feet catch some air.i feel that there are people don't like dirt coming on the feet if they tend to walk a lot.so what i do if m going out and i know i'm supposed to walk i wear socks with the sandals but when i know that i'm going to meet someone or maybe just going somewhere where i would not have to walk much i give socks a skip!
