Well, I know how you read a book. What I really meant was, how do you decide to read a book?
Let me put it this way... When I pick up a book, the first thing I do is to read the pages where all the reviews about the book was written. From that review, I would decide whether I will read it or not. So I start reading from there.
My friend would read the last chapter first. Yes, she would read it first and if she likes the ending, she will read the book from the start.
So how do you read a book? Share with us how you pick the book you want to read.

first i will read the synopsis, which usually is written in the back cover. if i think the book is worth reading, i will start reading it. if i'm reading a book, i will read from the first page, include tittle, acknowledgment, preface, table of contents, lol.

Sometimes I would read a review on a book in a magazine or someting and then I would make an effort to buy the book if I liked what the book was about. Otherwise I firstly look at the title of the book (off course I would look who the author is), and then read the inside flap of the book to also see what it's all about. Sometimes I also read about the author on the back of the book, and that can also be a deciding factor.

I just pick a book up and see what catagory it is in, as in fictional, or true, or a mystery or a love story or a war story, whatever and then if I like what I think it is, I will start reading it. If in the first couple chapters I don't like it, I just put it away and check for another one. I am an avid reader of mystery and love stories mixed in one book so if the book looks good and I know what I have read in the first couple chapters, I read the whole book. I usually know if I will like the book after a couple chapters.
When I am buying a book, which isn't very often, I read the back of the book cover which usually has a little bit of information about the book, and decide from that if I want to buy it. But I usually get my books for free from friends and family, or I go to garage sales and buy them for a dime each so then I don't read all of the backs, but just the catagory.

Well, I read the first page, if it catches my attention, then I go ahead and read the book. It must captivate my interests!

It depends on what the book is about. The title might be catchy or I may have heard about it from a friend. I am a member of a book club so sometimes I find a good book through them. I am actually reading a book I found in my grandma's bathroom. You just never know where you can find a good read!

I agree with you. I also found a good book in the garbage. My neighbor threw it there and when I passed by I saw the book, I picked it up and I was surprised that I love it. The author is also not popular but the book was really a good read. thanks for sharing.

Yup, if I am buying the book, reviews play an important part.
Otherwise, if I am just borrowing (doesn't cost me LOL ), I will just decide based on the synopsis, cover, author, genre, etc.
Hard to say which is the most important. I will take the overall impression into account.
Cheers!

Of course, we usually take time to decide on choosing a good read, otherwise, we don't want to waste our time reading a garbage. The total packaging of the book is important to make it readable so I also judge the book by it's cover. And I want to give unpopular author a chance too thinking that if I have my first book published, people will give me a chance too.

Sometimes it is the author that draws me. If it is Danielle Steele or Sandra Brown,or a few others, I will read them, no matter what. When it is an author that I don't know, I read the part where they tell what the book is about. I would never read a book if I knew how it would end. I also like autobiographies if it is written by someone who I like. Right now I have soooooo many books that I have boughten to read that I will be busy for a couple years and yet I just bought 4 new books!!

Yes, authors draw a lot of attention to the book. Once I read a book about an author and I love it, I would always find all the other books that he wrote. Thanks for sharing.

First I look at the cover of a book, if it looks interesting, I'll pick it up and read the back. Then I'll look inside and see the reviews, If I like it I'll buy it.

I read the back cover premise first. Then I would read the reviews of the book, and then i jump to the prologue of the book. Reading the prologue gives me a small idea bout the plot of the story and building on it from the premise read we can know the story plot without much problem.
If I like a book, I read it in one swing. But if the book has some parts where it gets boring, I stop for a while and read later.

Sometimes I will go on ebay and check out the review they have. If I am in the store I will read the back of the book and see what other authors have to say. A lot of times I will buy a book because I know the author is good from previous books of their's. I will take the chance on new authors though but they are usually on sale.

I have not tried buying from ebay. But I buy books from sale or second hand stores. And I am lucky that there are people who give books as gifts. thanks for sharing.

I do not like to read the reviews. Sometimes I think they give away far too much. I usually know pretty much what books I'll like. I have a whole bunch of authors that I enjoy, and I get all their new books. I also subscribe to book series. One with classic books, one with all sorts of books with new art illustrations. That way I get to read something beside my favorit authors as well. I also enjoy watching tv shows about books and writers. I often see someone on there that fascinates me and I will get their books. Sometimes I read a super short review in my book club that makes me want to try something new as well. Or a friend recomends something to me. Hmm. Sounds like I'll read most everything I get my hands on, and I probably will.

I agree, sometimes reviews give away too much losing the book's mystery. I also enjoy different kinds of books I just wish I have more time for reading them like I used to. thanks for the response.

well, i am also somewhat similar to your friend. i like to read the ending. hehe though not the whole last chapter of course. i just read a page or two sometimes. i usually read the the book synopsis(is that what it's called?) at the back of the book to decide if i like the book or not. if i can't decide, then i read the ending 2 or 3 pages.

Normally I read the back cover and if it interests me, I start reading the book. I dont bother with the reviews. If I find the book boring or hard to get into, I wont bother reading the rest of it. Though I tend to read true stories, about people growing up and how tough their lives has been and how they had the courage to turn their lives around for the better.
I dont think I would be able to read the last chapter as it would spoil the story and also you wont have a clue about all the characters.

I guess you are right, reading the last page can spoil the story. But sometimes there are people who are nosey . Thanks for the response.

These days, I mostly read books by the many authors I know and love. There are so many of them, and I have limited time. But if a book's cover and the subject matter catch my attention, I will pick up new authors, especially if the books aren't more than 300 pages long. I have nothing against longer books, and if the book is by one of my favorites, like Mercedes Lackey, for instance, I will read them. But it's just a matter of too many books and not enough time, so I choose the latest Mercedes Lackey, Dean Koontz, John Gresham, Dorothea Benton Frank..you get the picture. The list does go on and on.

Yes I get the picture. I love John Grisham's books too. I also look for authors or the title of the book when choosing a good read. thanks for sharing.

well, to me a bookstore is like candyland to little kids. the first thing I do is look at the book covers, then I read the back of the book. I´m a very visual person, can´t help it.
therefore I´m pretty sure I miss lots of good novels.
but it´s different with sience books, here I do not care this much, I just look for the information I want.
