Beware of Mirrors in Hotels!

...Because you never know!
HOW TO DETECT A 2-WAY MIRROR :
When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc. How many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror( i.e., they can see you, but you can't see them).
There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it.
So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at? Just conduct this simple test:
Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.
However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, FOR IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR!
So remember , every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesn't cost you anything. It is simple to do, and it might save you from getting "visually raped" !
This is a really good thing to do. The reason there is a gap on a real mirror, is because the silver is on the back of the mirror UNDER the glass. As a two-way mirror, the silver is on the surface. Keep it in mind!
Ladies: Share this with your girl friends.
Men: Share this with your wives, daughters and/or girlfriend or friends.
good luck & thanks for reading!

I hate to break this to you but this is an Urban legend. You can read about it here: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/mirror.asp
A two way mirror isn't set against a wall but is placed within a wall. It's inset and not just over the wall. That is one of the best ways to tell.
Hope this helps.

You're quite welcome. I learned after a few times to check with snopes after having passed on a few things myself.

I have been hearing that two way mirror thing so even hotels we are selective. I have a friend who usually comes to the city to follow up papers, to do official business, to buy things for the office or for the family. She usually dont want to stay at her relatives place or to our place because she wants not to ask some favor. So she usually stays on hotels or inns. I usually accompany her or my daughter accompany her on her stay. Even if not doing anything inside the hotel room she wanted that privacy thing. So what we usually do, cover the mirrors with towels and always bringing in newspapers and tape and tape all the holes and the lights on the ceilings. Is she doing the right thing. Its her choice. Thanks for the advice.

Yes, I have already read this mail in another site. It is very difficult, especially in the trial rooms in the shops you wouldn't know who is watching from where. Please do check it out.
Nowadays many try out their dresses there in the trial rooms, even bras and panties and other inner ware. So be careful dears, check the mirror out as soon as you get in and then try out your new dresses. Bathroom mirrors are the worst. Please do check out. All the best

Do you know ive never even thought of two way mirrors!!...lol..what an interesting thought!!
I suppose we all take it for granted that others are as honest as we are...but sadly thats not true....
I have a freind who was always complaining about the place where she worked...they hadd close circuit television installed...everyewhere!!!...then apparently one day someones watch vanished from the staff room....of course there was uproar...and much talk of who couldnt be trusted.
But then after the incident they wondered had the bosses decided to secrete a camera in the staff room...and lol a lot of the girls there frequently changed thier tops etc!!...so they were getting a little bit pranid about being caught changing on CCTV...now that wouldnt be a nice thought...
But i said to her that i thought that would infringe their rights...surely...i dont think that they could have justified `watching` their staff¬!!!!...to me that wouldnt have been right in any way!!!!...

Now can't there be a mirror with the silver on the inside that is a two way? I'm sure there can be. Also is the entire surface the same on a two way mirror or can there be gaps? Like someplace it is a regular mirror and someplace it is a two way?
thankx..

Hi singlepixel,
Well this is an interesting snippet of information.
Now I'll be sure to install another pane of glass over the TOP of all my 2-way mirrors in all those change rooms!
Seriously, the simple test that you propose doesn't really safeguard you from being exploited. You might discover a 2-way mirror where the conditions that you describe apply, but not all 2-way mirrors will be so easily discovered.
The principle by which a 2-way mirror works is the key to discovering if one is being used. They use a semi-reflective coating which is also semi-transparent, that is, it reflects most of the incident light but lets a small percentage pass through.
What this means is that if the ambient light on side #1 is much brighter than the ambient light on side #2, then the people on side #1 will see their reflection while the people on side #2 will see the light which passes through from side #1. This depends on the light level on side #2 being much much lower than on side #1, otherwise the people on side #1 will start to see the light from side #2 and the people on side #2 will start to see their own reflection instead.
So the way to discover a 2-way mirror is to simply TURN OFF the lights and make the room as dark as possible, and then look very closely at the mirror to see if you can see something on the other side, through the reflection. Putting a torch or flashlight up against the mirror to shine light through to the other side will also help - a LOT. With a practiced eye, you should be able to make out a hidden room through a 2-way mirror without too much trouble - especially with the flashlight trick.
The silly thing is, current imaging technology renders clumsy things like 2-way mirrors obsolete. If I were looking to spy on Xena with the Big Boobies (and her little friend Gabriella) in the women's change room, I'd be thinking about installing pin-hole cameras in various strategic locations. Or I'd just tune in to the latest episode on Fox TV.

I just remembered another good way to find out if the hotel is using 2-way mirrors.
First, go to the Enchanted Forest with some were-sausages and when a were-wolf comes out to eat them, get him to bite you first and then run away (leaving the were-sausages).
Then when you stay at a hotel, just change into a were-wolf in front of a suspicious mirror, and if you hear a scream of terror from behind the mirror, then you know it's a 2-way mirror.
Conveniently, you can then emit a blood-curdling howl, smash the mirror, leap through and eat the people who were spying on you. And then quickly check out of the hotel.
