The older you get the more complicated your taxes become. The more pieces of paper you have to wait on to file. Sometimes, you don't really know all the pieces of paper that you will be needing. It can be easier to wait a bit towards the end of the time frame and then go file. Less likely to come back a few days later and find a bank account you forgot about.
Right about now is the busiest time for tax filing. Usually, the tax people tell me, things are busy right when the new year starts. Everyone with only 1 W2 comes in to get their money. Towards the month of April, things pick up again with people who have more complicated tax returns. I find March is a good month to get taxes done. Things are pretty quite then.

Because we procastinate! LOL. Seriously, some of us, aren't very organized with our paperwork and have to gather it up. Some people's taxes are complicated and that takes a lot of time. My parents were always doing down to the main post office to mail their taxes by midnight while I was growing up. My mom did them herself and still does. She has tons of piles of papers for all the income/expenses/medical for the year that she goes through. Plus knowing all the ins and outs of it. It's too much for me, I hand it off to my tax preparer. I just gave her my stuff last week. But she's been doing them for 12 years, so it's not difficult for her and doesn't take her very long. The bad thing is that I will get money back, so I should have done it sooner. But people who have to pay, usually don't want to pay until they have to.

I'm one of those who waited for practically the last minute. Anyway, I waited that long because I had to figure out where to get the money from to pay the damn taxes, and second, did not look forward to spending all of that time on filling out the forms. As I did that, however, I wondered if the IRS pays attention to all of the forms filed, or whether it waits for audit flags to go up. It's a logistics problem, really. Just consider how many people file tax returns and the manpower and computers it takes to process all of those forms. Scary. We're probably spending more on all of that than more important matters, like the failing economy.

I'm not really sure other than they do not have the money to pay them any sooner. I know some people like to put things off until the last minute though. I know alot of people wait until the last minute also so they do not have to give their money up until the last minute also. Alot of people who get a refund back also put their tax filing off until the last minute. that makes no sense to me either. We filed early and are still waiting to get our state return back.

I think it is just a small act of protest. The IRS keeps your refund to use as they see fit for a year but expects their due by 4/15 or else.
It's about the only legal way to protest paying the tax that is still owed without getting into trouble.

I am with you. We usually get ours done the 1st part of March. We'd get them done sooner, but the bank takes for ever to get our paperwork to us.

They have stayed open until midnight for years now. I am a procrastinator and if I didn't have hubby breathing down my neck on Dec 1st to get everything together so he can do them on Jan 1st...mine probably wouldn't get done until last minute. I have to admit it is nice to just have them done and out of the way- our refund has been sitting in the bank safe and sound for about 3 months now.
