Stag and Doe Parties

I am not sure about other places, but here it is common when a couple is getting married to throw a stag and doe party to raise money for the wedding. I am attending such a party tonight, thus this topic is on my mind. While helping my cousin prepare for it she mentioned that her fiance thought it was unreasonable to charge guests for bottled water. I thought it was perfectly reasonable since everyone attending is there to help finance the wedding more then any other reason, so I doubt paying $1 for a bottle of water would be considered unreasonable, especially when the hall we are holding the stag and doe has a perfectly serviceable tap, and if someone is too cheap to shell out a buck for a bottle of water they can always drink tap water. Have you ever thrown a Stag and Doe? Did you make much money at it? Do you think it is unreasonable to charge for bottled water at such an event? What do you think is the best money maker at such an event?

I dont think that charging a buck a bottle for water is unreasonable at all..like you said its to help out for the wedding so I can't see anyone complaining about it.. have fun btw!! I need a good party to go to myself sometime soon damn it LOL

A stag and doe is quite different then a stag or bachelor party, a stripper at a stag and doe would probably not go over too well. Yes I am looking forward to it, it should be fun.

My husband and I have been to a few Stag&Doe parties. They're great fun and a chance to wish the couple well, especially, if you're not on the guest list for the wedding. Not to mention that you can come away from them with some pretty decent prizes!Paying A $1 for bottled water? I don't see a THING wrong with that, especially since it could help defray the cost of throwing the Stag&Doe itself. I mean the hall has to be rented, food bought, prizes bought, tickets have to be printed, etc. Our wedding party was pretty cash strapped and so were we, so we didn't even HAVE a Stag&Doe. The best money makers I've seen are the raffles and the contests to win a bottle of booze. It gets really funny after people have had a few and you tell them that the nearest Loonie or Twoonie to a 60 of rye takes it home! 50-50 draws do well sometimes too. Before I read this post, I thought stag&does were held all over the place. Seems to be a Canadian tradition, though. Well, we do like to drink and what better excuse, ahem, reason to do so? Woo Hoo! That reminds me, it's been waaay too long since I was at a decent party! Have fun and get home safe!

The bottles of water went over well, no one complained. The raffles were indeed the big money makers, I won a $50 gift certificate for a new tattoo so looks like I will be calling to make an appointment. The did the twonie toss for a texas mickey of Crown Royal, I didn't even get close LOL. Yes it does indeed seem to be a Canadian thing, it was a blast. My mom drove to and from so I never had to drive regardless.

Yes I have tried forty creek, its not bad. Crown is of course my preference for Rye, but I'd rather still go with scotch, but I can rarely afford to drink scotch LOL. I am still trying to decide exactly what I want and where I want to put the tat, but I am planning on getting it done ASAP. I've been thinking about a second for a while now. The trick is to find something that when I am 80 I can still show off and think its cool rather then something that I think is cool right now but in five years will seem lame. I will post what I end up with once I decide.

That's great! Congrats on the gift certificate. I still have virgin skin, although a Tattoo, indeed several are something I want very much. The only thing holding me back is the cost. There are several good shops where I live, problem is, all the pieces I want are at least the size of the one in your avatar and I know that's not a very large piece. Anyway, please do post your new one after you get it. Sorry you lost out on the Crown, that's pretty decent rye. LOL Have you ever tried Forty Creek? Glad every one had a good time.

I've been to those parties for the bride and groom, although we call those 'bachelor parties' and they're given to honor the bride and the groom just before the wedding. I've never heard of one where they would charge money for water and all. That wouldn't fly well in this country! I've never heard of a bachelor, or bachelorette, party being given with the hopes of making money off of it. Personally, if they started doing that here, I probably wouldn't attend anymore. So, us guests would pay (gifts or money) at the bridal shower, at the wedding, and at a stag/doe bachelor(ette) party on top of it? Call me old-fashioned, but in my area we were brought up that a wedding is a social event to celebrate the union of two people, not a fund-raising activity. If a wedding cannot be financed by the bride and groom (and family), and they're expecting the guests to fund it, then maybe they should think of a less extravagant wedding. If I went to the party and was expected to pay for water, I would probably walk out as soon as I said my congratulations. Seems rude asking for guests to pay, just my humble opinion though. Call me curious...what country do you come from that does this?

This is in Canada, and it is separate from the bachelor and bachelorette parties. Its basically just a party where you pay a small door fee which gets you into a draw for a door prize and drink for lower then bar prices. It is common practice here and most people not only don't mind but have a great time. Its not like a wedding or even engagement party where if you receive an invite you are obligated to attend, it is more a "want to party, why not do it to raise funds for our wedding rather then go to a bar and give your money to someone you don't know."

I've not heard of Doe parties, but a Stag night, or Stag party is when a soon to be married man goes out with all his friends for a symbolic "last night of freedom" the female equivalent, oddly enough, rather than a doe party is a Hen party or Hen night. neither are about getting money for the wedding.

In the UK it is called a "stag" & "hen" party. the stag party being the males where they usually get drunk, see a stripper and play a practical joke (tie him up naked to a lamp post). the hen party is obviously the womens and apart from the joke thing is like the stag party. Both events are usually held the day before the wedding and are to celebrate the last night of freedom before getting married.

Making money from the Stag and Doe party (we call them Stag and Hen partys in England) sounds like a fantastic idea. Our daughter is getting married in June and we could do with a hand with the cost of the wedding. I can't believe how expensive it is now. The stag is going to the horse races and the hen is having a pamper weekend. Everyone attending is paying their own way but there is no additional charge to add to the wedding fees. Never mind at least I know everyone will have a good time and my daughter will have a day to remember.

Stag and hen parties are separate from the stag and doe. The stag and doe is a combined party with the sole purpose of making money for the couple, usually it is a hall rental with raffles and prizes, gambling and copious amounts of drinking. Its alot of fun, and well worth the money.

Never had or been to one. Got invited to one once but timing didn't work out. Bu tI find it perfectly acceptable to charge for bottled water. For the exact same reasons, if you're not going to drink booze and you're such a sometyhingorother that you feel you absolutley *have* to have bottled water you can bloody well pay for it, or drink tap water, it aint going to kill you. Only exceptionw ould be somewhere like where I'm living currently. The tap water ehre isn't good for drinking. I mean, you can drink it and it won't kill you but it tends to make some people... well let's just say it can make them ill in a a way that doesn't involve things coming up and out but the other direction. . Doesn't do it to everyone though and it's fine for cooking and stuff.

I have never heard of a Stag and Doe party. I had a stag party myself, but that was different. Over here we still get the father of the bride to cough up if we can (says the father of a daughter ruefully) but increasingly both partners chip in too. A $1 for a bottle of water seems reusable to me. As you say, they can always get it out of the tap for free. Not even begun to answer any of your questions. But have a good time.
