We just had a visit from a neighbour whom I had never met before. He lives behind my next door neighbour. I invited in inside, but he refused. He got somewhat agro & complained about our dog barking at all hours of the night. I mentioned that nearly all of us in my street had dogs. He said it was ours (the Dalmation). I expressed great surprise that he was barking at all hours of the night, as my bedroom door is open & I dont hear him barking. My daughters bedroom backs onto the backyard & she doesn't hear him barking. He does bark at times, generally a bit during the day & early evening. I have known him once or twice to bark at midnight, & I went out at that hour to check for possums in the tree.So if I am going to hear this barking, then I'm going to hear any barking. I asked this man of he meant , like, at 4.00am. Now honestly, if I heard Max barking at 4.00am I would be pout the back like a shot shutting him up. MY daughters sleep is critical, as she is a competitive swimmer. We get up at 4.00am three mornings each week, for her training & we dont hear him barking. This neighbour claims he has been making notes for the past 2 months & is about to complain to the council. Then he got just a biot threatening & said "so we have to do something about it". But how am I going to do anything about a dog "barking at all hours of the night" if I dont hear this? I am really p..... off!

Wow, that is pretty pathetic. It seems like your neighbor might want to try to sleep instead of keeping count of how many times he hears a dog bark. And saying it was your dog, out of so many other dogs is pretty hard to prove. I hope if he does call council they see how petty and ill conceived his grievences truly are.

Hubby has rung the council to find out the situation. It doesn't seem like the neighbour has much of a case. Yep, apparently people are still getting notifications days late.

This is weird. It says this discussion is 4 days old, but I only got it in my e-mail box yesterday.

Hi jennybianca! I think he is barking at the wrong tree! I think he may be hearing some barking but definitely not yours, it may be someone else's dog. However, if he is already taking notes and is ready to file a complaint...maybe it is not only you whom he is complaining but some of your neighbors too. I guess then, you and your neighbors can group together and just complain about him barking at all of you every chance he can get. haha..just joking dear friend! Don't let him get into your nerves my friend. Don't let him spoil your day! Take care and have a nice day!

Since the neighbor is hearing the dog around 4am could it be the dog is barking after you leave for training? Just a thought that he might be making noise at that time since you left without him. I have known some dogs to do that. If you can though check with other neighbors to see if they have heard him. Something else to consider is maybe bring the dog in at night. That might be part of the problem. The neighbor hears a dog but the only one he sees is yours so is assuming it's yours.

If he was barking after we left at 4.00am, my husband would hear him (we keep bathroom & toilet windows open). I am going to check with one of my neighbours today.

That is your best bet, checking with the neighbors to see what they have to say on it. They can probably shed some light on the issue.

Have you talked to your immediate neighbors about it? Ask them if they hear your dog barking at 'all hours of the night'. If not, then that guy is just being a pain in the azz and needs something to complain about. If he's sleeping, I'd like to know how he can hear you dog barking when he's not your immediate neighbor. Since your not hearing him and noone else is, then you have nothing to worry about. Only way I can hear my own dog barking at night is when he's right under my bedroom window. Even then, most times the window has to be open in order to hear him and he's got a loud, deep bark.

We keep, our bathroom & toilet windows open at night & none of us hear him barking at all hours of the night, especially my daughter, whose bedrooms backs onto the back yard. However, I am on friendly terms with one neighbiour, & she has dogs, so I will ask her.

It could very well be the guy is hearing your neighbor's dogs barking. Eventually, you'll find out just which dog(s) he's hearing.

Some neighbors can be very difficult... maybe this one really hates dogs... and yours is the one nearest to his house... he is just making things up just so there will be a reason to complain... You might as well ask your nearest neighbor... if they can hear your dog barking all night... if he is the only one complaining... then i don't think his word will hold...

I agree that this neighbour possibly hates dogs. We know he is not telling us the whole truth anyway.

I never have neighbors complain about my dogs at night because they all come inside to sleep. Not only does it prevent the "bark patrol" from setting up a neighborhood link, it keeps the dogs safe from dog thieves (dog fighters or people who sell animals to laboratories). It is so simple to bring the dogs in and have a cordoned-off area where they can sleep. Then when your neighbor complains, you can explain that your dogs sleep inside, so it couldn't possibly be them.

Unfortunately the dog the neighbour is complaining about, was never toilet trained by my husband, so he can't sleep inside. Besides, he chases our cats.

Heck with that guy. I would just ignore it. It is probably his dog making the noise and he is trying to pawn it off on your dog!

This happened to me once, but I was the tormented person hearing the dogs. Our next door neighbors had 2 dogs and for some reason the sound did not go into their house, but ours. It kept us awake many nights. One day she was over at my house and heard her dogs. She couldn't believe it because she never heard them It must have been a wierd echo or a strange breeze that blew the sound our way. So, I would say, compromise, be a good neighbor, and bring the dogs in at night. You never know what your neighbor is hearing.

I can't bring the barking dog in at night. My husband never toilet trained him when he was young. Anyway, we believe this neighbour is exagerating heaps. There is no way he barks all hours of the night. We can hear him easily inside our house. Why would I let a dog disturb our sleep, especially my daughters when she has to get up at 4.00am some mornings for training. She is a competitive swimmer. Swimmers need their sleep.

can you bring your dog in the house sounds like this guy can and will make a report and you will have a more serious issue if it is not dealt with.

It seems like it is his word against yours. He has his "notes" but you and your daughter both are witnesses that there is no barking. Ask him to tape the barking and then identify which dog in your neighborhood is actually doing the barking!! I know I can identify each of my dogs by their bark.

Hubby thinks he is doiung some secret taping, as he leaves his back door wide open (in the cold evenings & nights). However, Dave rang the council & it seems this neighbour hasn't put in a complaint yet. Mainly because we are sure he hasn't been completely honest.

Maybe your neighbor is hearing someone elses dog barking if you don't hear your very own. If you think it is your dog though, you can get a bark collar for them. They will stop the barking. If I had a dog outside though, I think I would want them to be able to bark and alert me of strangers. I think your neighbor is just trying to blame your dog for this. He may not have a clue.

We have tried a couple of those barking collars on Max & they dont work for him. He loves lemons, so they citronella one was a total failure. However, his barking was only in the evening, not all hours of the night.

I have two dogs, a golden lab mix and a pomeranian/ snow dog mix. The second one has all the personality of a pom and will sometimes bark at every little thing. Both dogs are indoors at night. We've gotten so used to the pom barking whenever a bird sneezes that the first few yaps no longer even register. It takes a full minute of continued barking to even wake us up. Most of the time she will settle down before we even realize she has been barking. If she continues after being told to be quiet it means someone is moving about or other dogs in the neighborhood are barking in response to some disturbance. When we have had a night where she refused to settle down we will often find out a day to two later a car was broken into down the street. So when some of the neighbors have complained I let them know if the barking goes on for more then a few minutes there is something afoot in the neighborhood and they should peek out their windows to see what might be going on or even just call the sheriff and tell them something is not right and to make a patrol check through the area. If your dog is barking it may be that he will give a few yaps then settle down and you might not "hear" but your grumpy neighbor may be a light sleeper that is disturbed by every little noise. Check with your other neighbors as well as be attentive to what makes some of the dogs bark. There may be some "disturbance" that makes a few or all of the dogs to bark for a few moments. Be more aware of what is going on in your neighborhood. As for the grumpy neighbor if there are other dogs he would have to have proof that it is your dog. Most likely it is another dog or the barking is not extreem and he is just too sensitive to the slightest disturbance.

Our dog almost barks if a bird sneezes, he even sees phantom birds. I intend asking my next door neighbour if she hears this barking at all hours. She also has three dogs. I suspect the neigbbour is not telling us the full truth. Hubby thinks he is a shift worker, but wont admit this as the council can't do anything about barking dogs during the day. Hubby also thinks he has a hidden tape recorder down the back. This neighbour should have been honest, as we would have been far more ammendable to sorting the situation out.

Hello, Jennybianca. To treat with people is a hard thing to do. However, you should do something. Try to wake up at 3:40 a.m. and hear your dog barking. If he is not really barking, then take your dog away for a while, for example to a SPA, and leave him there for a week. Tell nothing to this guy, though. When he comes back complaining, tell him that the dog was away for a week and the bark continued, so it isn't your dog. He will have no more words, and will be able to do nothing but to understand and give up of blaming your dog. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

Dont you have a garage or something that you can put Max into for one night without the neighbours knowing of course! Do it as late as possible so the dog has time to do his business. Then go and ask this neighbour if your dog kept him up all night again! If he says yes! tell him you are going to lay a complaint of harrassment against him because he just assumes - you have a big dog so it must be yours doing all he barking! It makes me mad when people are so stupid. A dog will only bark if there is something there to bark at or the dog has been left alone on the property for some time! What does he think the dogs bark at...the leaves moving on the trees!!!!!!!

We dont exactly have a garage, but we have a carport. I am not sure how Max would go being in the carport all night. I suspect he would bark all night. However, you are at least the 3rd person to suggest he goes somewhere else for the night. It might be worth us paying for him to stay at a dog kennel for a night or two.

If, as you say, nearly everyone on the street has dogs that bark then your neighbor is going to be hardpressed to find a solution to his problem. He can't order everyone to get rid of their dogs, he can't have everyone fined for having a dog and as most everyone knows, dogs can't tell time so a curfew for barking is not going to help. He sounds like he is one of those neighbors that just like to complain and I'd let him go complain to the council and then I'd expect him to produce proof that it is your dog barking and why is it that none of the other dog owners are being singled out. On a side note, if I were you I'd keep an eye on your dog. My Dad had one when we were kids that a neighbor didn't like and the neighbor put ground up glass in the dog's food...some ppl have some terrrible things to answer for. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

dogs - cute and lovable dogs
try giving your dog a vacation, i mean try giving her a one day trip to your relative then if your neighbor is still saying that he hears some dog barks, it will definitely be not your dog, and you would have a evidence that your neighbor just want to argue with you. but if it is really your dog then try visiting this discussion of mine http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1466023.aspx there are many tips in there regarding to loud dog barks.

The problem with this idea is that the neighbour is unlikely to report to us every day. Although I guess if the neighbour is keeping records & reports this to the council, we could check to see if dates he wasn't here matched. I read your discussion, but this procedure is not allowed in Australia.

Buy a citronella barking collar. It is not cruel like a shock collar. When your dog barks, it sprays citronella and they hate that smell. After awhile they begin to self correct themselves. I would try that for awhile until the neighbor calms down. If i could, i would talk to your other neighbors with dogs and let them know what is going on so they are aware that they might be next or maybe they will stand behind you.

We tried the citronella collar years ago. It didn't work because he loves lemons & oranges. He picks lemons off our tree & eats them daily. However your suggestion has given me a thought.., I wonder if I tried chilli powder mixed with water & kept it as a spray. I would have to rush out every time I heard him barking & spray it at him. Of course, if I am not at home or I am too preoccupied, I couldn't spray him. I wonder if this would be safe?

We had a neighbor take us to civil court because she claimed our dog barked too much. Granted this was during the daytime, not at night as our sucks have always slept inside. She even wrote down the time the dog barked and how many barks he let out. Turns out that the dog only barked when school was out and the neighborhood kids walked by, and he only let out one or two barks before we told him to stop. The judge literally laughed at this woman. He told her that dogs need to talk too, just like people. If worse comes to worse and the authorities get involved, you may want to -- along with letting them know that you do not believe it is Max that is guilty -- suggest that most dogs bark for a reason, perhaps someone coming home from or leaving to go to work at that hour. It is likely that it is only one or two barks at 4:00 a.m. or the whole neighborhood, including yourselves, would hear it. Any normal person probably would not even notice one or two barks. It is more likely that this man has nothing better to do then complain about stuff and try to make other people as miserable as he is.

Wow! The first thing you need to do is to tell that guy to get a life. Apparently he has nothing better to do with his time. Maybe he should find a hobby. I have a neighbor just like him and this neighbor was always complaining about my dogs barking. She made a list just like your neighbor and told me that she was going to turn me into the dog catcher. Well, I guess that she must not like me for some reason because we live in a small country town and every person here has a dog. I told her to make me a copy of her list so I could check it out. She returned later with her handwritten full page timeline and she handed it to me and started to leave. I said please don't leave I would like to go over this with you. As I'm reading her list I noticed that pretty much all of the time she had written down was when the kids got out of school (3:30) until a little after (7:00). i looked at her and said are you kidding me? I told her your dog barks at that time of day as well. Everybodys dog barks at that time of day. What does she go to bed at 3:30 in the afternoon? Then there was one time that was past 10:30. I took her list crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash can and told her that the dog catcher would laugh in her face. Well that made her mad and she stalked off. For the next two weeks she kept leaving her lists on my front door. Well needless to say I got very angry and called the police department to tell them what was going on. They told me I could file a restraining order against her and the next time she showed up on my doorstep I could have her arrested. So I did that and while that was going through I was visited by the dog catcher and I showed him the lists she gave me and he laughed. So needless to say I didn't have to worry about getting in trouble with them. But what really made me angry was that here in our state if you are reported three times they will destroy your dog. Anyway the sheriffs department served her with a restaining order and she now leaves me alone but she has started on other neighbors as well. She better watch out because if more people file for restraining orders she's never going to be able to step out of her house again. Anyway as far as doing something about dog barking(which people who do not want to hear dogs bark should move to the middle of nowhere where it is dog free) I would actuallty try a little experiment. They do have the collars that give the dog a zap when he barks and I think they are horrible I would never put one of those on any of my pets. But there is one and it sprays a small amount of this orange smelling stuff. (i'm not sure what's in it but it's supposed to be safe for your pet) You might try that on your dog for as long as you think is necessary and when the dork comes back or the council complains or the dog catcher come you can tell them they are full of poo and show them what you have done to stop the problem. Even if your dog isn't barking what is it going to hurt? The second you show the catcher the device he's going to let you off the hook. You don't have to put it on your pooch all the time maybe just try to put it on when the guy said he can hear your dog barking just to make sure. You might just think I'm a nut and not want to try it but that's the only thing I can think to try other than shooting you neighbor. HA HA HA. Just remember people like your neighbor must be really unhappy with their lives to complain about dogs barking and he sounds like a real snot especially since he wouldn't come into your home. So try not to flip the guy off everytime you see him (HAHAHAHA)and hang tough. The next thing you know he'll start complaining about the kids being to loud when they play outside. Can anybody say loser. Take Care!
