Which Era Would You Prefer To Be Living In?

Era - another era

A very nice day to all, here is a discussion that I would love to know from you guys. There are lots of movies on the "lost" time and stuff like that. Whenever I watch movies like Pearl Harbor and other forms of war movies, I am truly inspired and felt that the heroes that sacrificed were really the real heroes in our lifetime, and if I could go back to an era, I would choose for an era decades ago where I would be read about in history books for my heroic acts. That's my fantasy. What about you? For ladies, do you picture yourself in the era of Marilyn Monroe or Elvis?? Or would you prefer to live in the Victorian Era where ladies where all nice costumes and all that? Or would you prefer to be in another dimension of aliens and all that like some of the movies show?

I've always thought that, although times were hard then, I would like to go back to either the Dark Ages, or the Middle Ages. In fact, I'm not so sure I wasn't here in a previous life in either one, or both of those eras. Just think how much green space there was then. Ok, there were castles and a few huts, people had to hunt, and work the land, and there were lots of battles. But, I think that compares very favourably with today's world... everything is so rushed, and money is such an issue that the world has become materialistic, rather than valued, as it was then. Brightest Blessings.

I live in a little village in the countryside, with a part Saxon part Norman church, which stands on a hill. In Saxon days, my whole County was forest land, and much of that survives today. I'm not too far from Stone Henge, an ancient megalithic monument constructed from stone, and I can always be at one with nature, by stepping out of my door. But for the traffic and the cost of housing, I love this way of living, and often sit and think back to the times when it was a Medieval village, or a Saxon forest with just a few buildings on the ridges. That all appeals to me greatly. Thank you for this discussion, my friend. It's made me quite nostalgic... I love English history.

Hi my friend, I love English history and European ones as well and I must say that you are really lucky to be brought up in such a nice set of environment. There must be really some good and gorgeous landscapes over where you live. You are certainly welcome, and let's hope that nature is preserved shall we..

Hi bro, thanks so much for your comments. You have highlighted a very important issue; the greenery and the nature! Yes, I agree totally, it was more luscious and filled with nice sights and smell of greenery. I really want to be experiencing that; as shown in some of the pictures I came across. I totally agree with you that nowadays, the world is filled with materialistic needs and people that I wish that I could go back to that kind of era you described as well. But then the battles were something that had to be faced. There are pros and cons definitely. Thanks bro for your comments; appreciate it so much.

Easy. I love the style and elegance that the 1920s had to offer. I would definitely want to live in that era.

Hi Sonadora, 1920s is indeed very cool and full of nice elegance and great sense of fashion like you said. I would love to have a time machine to go back there for a bit and check the clothes out, LOL. Thanks for your input on this.

For sure, I love the flapper dresses, and of course the jewelry. 1920s is a very distinct era in jewelry. Oh, and the parties. Would have been so much fun.

I wouldn't want to be in a time before they had the internet for a whole lifetime. It was good when I was young and poor that it had not been invented yet, as that would have been just one more exciting thing I would have to have done without. Sometimes it is so much easier to do without things that not every body else has either. Like when I was a school child we didn't have running water or central heating. But although many of my classmates did, othersewere like me. Being the only one without an internet connection would be just too much to bear! I am wondering how I will do being away for myLot for just a couple weeks. Changes are I will live and look you up when I get back, lol.

Awwwww drannhh, I sure would miss your discussions and your replies to my post should you be away for a couple of weeks from mylot. Then you will have to do whatever you are doing quickly and come back ONLINE, LOL. By the way, I enjoyed my younger days as well and I felt that life was truly much simpler back then with no materialistic things to boast about. People tend to compare in this era and we have to strive to prove that we are materialistic worth of things. How sad. :(

I loved the 80's. I loved the clothes, the makeup, the music, the carefree attitude, the stupid movies. I loved that we were not all scared back then. It was a time of prosperity even though it ended up being over inflated, but ignorance was bliss and it was a fun decade to live in.

Hi there ladym33, -smiles- ..I love the era of the 80's as well. It was like the moment of truth whereby everyone is trying to find a niche for themselves and yes I agree with you totally, life was more carefree back then. Thank you for posting. ;)

i love the 80's and thank God I was born and grew up in this era. I get to experience the clothes, music/sounds, etc. Play and fun are very much physical in nature unlike today that almost all kids greaw up sitting in front of computers playing games and all.

I love the 1960's. the whole Dreamgirls setting. I think that era is so remarkable. Although it was really chaotic but it led to different movements (Chicano Movement, Civil Rights Movement).

Hi zed, how have you been ?....Honestly zed, I am happy as things are now, may be a few things could be better but then one cannot have everything in life.Thinking of the olden victorian days, people and especally ladies had so many restrictions and had to lewad a very confined life which may not have been all that fun, so, all in all I feel happy living in the 21st century with at least some freedom to do what I want....all the best zed and have a great weekend

Thanks so much, Kiran.. I am fine, thanks so much and I hope you are doing fine yourself. You've got some good points there. Come to think of it, living in the olden days, there are lots of restrictions for both men and women. Men do not have powerful machines back then and ladies are restricted to choose the love that they want freely. So I get what you mean there.. good points, Kiran..

I too have the same fantacy when i see a movie on some heroic acts and i feel the same to be able to do some act of heroic nature. According to me they persons who sacrifices their life for the motherland and other people are the real heroes.

I sometimes day dream about living in the 11th century or the early 1800's - but I guess it is best that I live in the time and era that I do. I figure God put me where I would most likely be able to save my soul.

Hi Modestah, thanks for responding. I do day dream like you too, but I certainly agree that it would be better to be living in the era that we are "slotted" by God. There must be a reason and I am thankful that I could still see this beautiful world. Thanks for posting and have a nice day. ;)

Possible eras, and you said I could use not just history but also alternate universes. That makes it all the more interesting. Futuristic/Neo-Space Tech age (possible future reality) Feudal Japan Renaissance Period of Italy and Europe High Education reality (alternate reality) Magic realm type reality (alternate reality) Universe Birth Cycle (course I couldn't do it in current form...) The future one would be my first choice, and then after that the alternate dimensions.

I actually have always found the Victorian era truly beautiful as far as how they dressed but, to be quite frank, I think I would rather stay in this era. I have more freedoms as a woman in this era than I would back in another era. I can vote, work and just be a human instead of a protected, rightless doll that can't take care of herself and live freely. I would not rather step backwards. In fact, if I could, I might like to step forward a few decades or so to see how much more advanced women are in the future. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not a feminist really. I just like my freedoms that the women in the past had to fight to afford me. But, the clothes they wore were so lovely. However, from what I understand, they were quite painful with the corsets and how heavy they were. I like my comfort now! I think I'll happily chose to stay here in 2008!

Hello cortjo, thanks for your response. I love Victorian era as well, but you are right, there's not much freedom for women during that time based from the books that I've read the movies that I've watched. No worries, I won't be labeling you as such as I think women are more advanced and have a more mature thinking nowadays. Better than the ones that were in the past. Yes, I love seeing their clothes and the guys looked all smart and dandy, ha! Thanks for responding. I think to live in 2008 is fine too by me, lolz...happy posting there..;)

To go back and visit? Maybe I'd go back to England and find out what really happened to the princes in the tower or some such mystery. To live? I'll stick with now and modern medicine and my children all having a really good chance to grow up. Or if there were a future where they had cured cancer and all our nasty diseases and extended life and abolished war and mental disease and so on, I'd go there!

I know there were much more significant times but I loved the carefree spirit of the 80's. Times before that woman were not really treated as we are today. Woman were treated as ladies and were definately admired, and cherished, and protected, but still like second class citizens. So being a woman I would not really want to go back to a time when women were treated like that, or a time when anyone for that matter was treated like that. I liked that in the 80's that it was acceptable to be both beautiful and smart, as it is today. We also lived a grand delusion of comfort and wealth in the 80's.

It's funny you should start a discussion such as this. I have always felt I was born in the wrong decade. Society as a whole scares me with the crime rates, cost of living, government the way it is, technology, etc etc. I believe I belong back in the Old West. Back when women wore ankle long gowns and bonnets. Cars weren't invented yet, instead everyone go to where they needed to be by horse drawn buggy. To me life seemed simpler then. Food didn't come with preservatives or addatives, it was grown right in your own backyard. Crime was unheard of an unspeakable. Children were allowed to be children. There wasn't too many wealthy people and very few poor people. To me everything just seems like it was more peaceful and balanced. That is the era I wish to live in.

I agree with you, katsmeow. Simple life equates to simple expectations. Nowadays the quality of life is so super expensive and charmed that we are surrounded by crimes and the likes and people everywhere are struggling to create wealth and names for themselves. I wish a simpler life than this too, but too bad we are stuck here, ha!

zed_ my choice most definately is to live in another dimension with entities like me. It seems I never fit into the whole culture of America. It hurts me to see buildings where there should be trees. I look at all the cars passing by me and I'm so tragically sad for mankind's contribution to the destruction of our planet. Everything feels so wrong and I feel like an alien. Okay, it's not that bad all the time, don't worry. For the longest time I felt I should have lived in the 1800's when women were still women and as you mention, wore all the lovely costumes from that era. In my alien world, noone needs a body, because the mind has transcended. Mayabe I watch too much sci-fi. But it seems that's where my heart is. Wow, I just realised this is a three week old conversation, and no one knew I was in romantic trouble. I don't want you to get mixed up. It's me, I'm just over here in the past. Okay, bye. Take care.

I really want to stay in this era, I will be lost without all the modern technology. But in moments of sentimentality, I would like to go back to the Heinan period of Japan. That would be around late 8th to early 9th century. It's a period of splendid grandeur for the people who are royalty. I like the elaborate costumes they got to wear, the elaborate rituals they observe and the fragility of daily life they underwent.

The 1800's and i would have to lice in the west (u.s.a.) like texas or wyoming. It would probably only take one day of hauling water to do the laundry and i would come on back to where i belong. Still i would love to see the open vastness of the west at that time.

Ohhh I love this question. I don't want to live in a previous era but a future one. I LOVE star trek. I know it's corny. But I dream of living on a starship or a space station. I dream of meeting people from other worlds. I would love to explore space. That's where I would live if I could in the era of advanced space exploration.
