How do you make yours?

Regarding your grocery list....
do you have a list that you add things to on a daily basis as you notice you will be needing something - or do you wait till grocery day and look through your supplies and jot it all down then?
Do you organize your list according to aisle that the products are found in, or according to the type of product (frozen, snack, dairy, meat, fresh produce, canned goods, paper goods)
or any old way as they happen to come to mind?
--------
I like to keep an ongoing list - and then the day I go shopping (or the night before) I will organize it according to category. If I have coupons I put the ones I know I will be using at the front of my holder.
I will keep a piece of paper magneted to the fridge for ease of jotting down items that I run out of... but for the final list I like to prepare it on the computer and have it printed out. much easier to move items around that way and also to check them off the list when shopping.

I do it both ways. When I'm feeling really well organized, I keep a list and let everyone add to it. But when I'm having brain freeze (fibromyalgia fog, actually), then I'll forget to post a list. Then I make one immediately before I shop. I learned long ago to always have a list and to not buy (much) that isn't on the list. Doing that, I know how much it should cost. I'll keep an estimated total in my head, and usually when I get to the cashier, the total in my head will be within $1 of what the register says.

When I read this I noticed a lot of it I do the same way if I am buying something but I do not just do it ina grocery store if on the rare occassions it is me that goes. I take a list and estamate and a lot of the time I even compair prices in my head. I tend to do it in every store I go in. A lot of the time I end up comming out of a store with more money than I had added up in my head that I thought would be left over. I plan if not in a grocery store I plan by the birthday and annivercery that is in any given month. like for birthday if it is for a boy and he liked fishing I will price stringers to put fish on that is useful to the person but at the same time inexspensive depending on where you get it. A lot of the time you might have to buy for a lot but if you plan well and knowq where to get what you need cheap you get off better buying that way even if you have to goi to more than one place.

I start to take notice of all the things I'm running low on or that I run out of. I start it a few days before I know it's time to go shopping. I keep it as updated as I possibly can and kind of decide what is more important for me to buy at the time.

No I don't have a shopping list. I just make it up as I go along. Every once in awhile I might write down a few things, but by the time I get to the store I pretty much forget that I've written myself a list. I just wing it. The last few times I've been though I've forgotten the gosh darn dish detergent!

I was always very bad about keeping a list, but I'm doing pretty good with it now. I keep a slip of paper on the fridge and add to it as I think of things.
Now I just need to remember to bring it with me when I go to the grocery store!
I just jot things down as I think of them or when I use the last of something, so it's in no particular order. I don't bother re-writing it in categories or anything. The list isn't usually all that long to make it worth the bother.

I am an admitted "horriable grocery list person". I try to make lists every time I go but they never work out and even if I do remember to bring them I don't stick to it. The only time I even attempt to make a list these days is if I am having a special dinner and need certain things or if I am having a party and need certain things. Other then that I am over making lists.

We usually wait until grocery day then I take note of everything that we need to buy again. I go through our cupboards first and then our fridge. I sometimes make a note of a few meals we usually like eating and make sure that we have all the ingredients, if not then I make a note of what to get when we go shopping.
I have a note pad that sticks onto our fridge door with a magnet and I make notes on it too if we run out of something during the week.

i have a second "me" list on there of things i get,
or appliances to be replaced.

I used to make a list. Now I just go and buy whatever stuff i think we need. of course i often forget something, but since i work in the mall, it's not such a hassle to go back.
For those who are like me though, my advice is never ever shop when your hungry 'coz you end up buying more foods you don't really need!

Hello there Modestah, I think that this question is good for me because it's time I change the way I do grocery shopping, LOL. I tend to wait until my fridge gets empty before I go and buy something for myself. Or worst, I wait until i get starved enough to buy something just to fill my stomach. My parents don't really eat at home and all of us have this habit of eating outside. And we take turns to buy groceries, so when it's my turn, I always tend to conveniently forget which makes my mom nag at me, ha! But it's certainly have to change for should I have my own place someday, I would have to make the cut there.
Thanks for this discussion, I like it. ;)

I make a grocery list based on the foods that I'm going to cook for the week. I can't keep a running list because I always lose the paper so I figure out what I need to buy once a week.

I go shopping about every two weeks (payday, ya know). Then I start a new list and keep it updated as I see things that I will be needing for the next two week's menus. I square off a piece of paper and write down the headings for the columns according to the product category as it will be found aisle by aisle in the store. Just before time to go, I will check and see if there are any staples that need to be added that I have missed during the list making process.
And I never go shopping without the list. If I happen to forget it (which I do sometimes as I'm a ditz), I will come back to the house to get it. This keeps me from just going up and down aisles and seeing & getting things that I may want but really do not need. I do not buy anything that is not on the list unless I know for sure that I have just forgotten to write it down.
I use coupons only for those things that are on my list. I don't just use a coupon to be using it.

Yes, I keep a list which I add to as and when things run out, so that I can replenish the stock. I also arrange the items I require into groups, like beverages, fruit and veg, tinned foods, bottles and jars, cereals, etc. That way, it makes my shopping day much simpler and quicker.
Brightest Blessings, and happy shopping.

I am a vegan and my grocery list is very selective. I keep a mental picture of the food in my house. For instance, when I eat a veggie burger, my mind makes an imprint of how many boxes remain. I always keep two boxes on hand.
If I lose track at the grocery store, like forgetting if I need rice milk; I close my eyes_ without bumping into anyone_ and 'see' where my rice milk is. If the place where I keep my rice milk is empty, then I know its time to buy more.
However brilliant that makes me_ LOL_ if I want one specific unusual item, I write it down in my mind and sometimes transfer it to a list.
If I'm really turned around; I visualize every aisle in the grocery store and 'see' if I need anything from them.
My problem is, everytime I make a list I lose it! So far I haven't lost my mind_ except for the other day in CVS_

You are so organized and I really envy you as you are doing it the right way. i am one of those that waits until grocery day then puts together my grocery list.I have been getting more organized lately as I order on line and have to have the same things grouped together before I start making my grocery order. but an ongoing list would be great even for me as I am shopping for one person, myself.my son makes his grocery list on his computer also. When I shop in larwin square I do group things by aisles and that really really helps so much.

I have to say that we really don't make a list of anyting. We don't buy groceries very often and we rarely cook at home. I work at a restaurant so usually I eat there since I get a discount. It's either there or fast food. Sometimes we cook things in the crock pot. I used to just make a list the day of grocery shopping. When I actually went to the store some months ago.
