Bonnie He does have a valid point about it rusting. If he is just wanting to do a touch-up, I would go with it. Rust spreads and you could end up with holes in it.

Bonnie Oh, I forgot to say.....the sugar helps to make the potatoes/vegetables crispy on the outside and tender in the inside. The soaking is done to release the major amount of starch in the potaotes.
