Yes, you better start with knowing what you will write: novel, articles, speech etc. Once you know what you like to write, you can start with an outline. from here you will write what you'll like to happen. then you will see it just happen...

I feel that it is better to start by writing the skeleton of the story first. Then note the characters name and their mannerism, anything regarding them. Then you can expand your outline into chapters and the novel is born. This is what I do.. Hope this works for you.

The best thing to do is start by organizing your thoughts. If you have ideas for more than one book, write them down on seperate sheets of paper or try index cards. Something else you can do is keep a writer's journal. All that is, is a notebook that you keep with you at all times that you can jot down any ideas that you might have so that you don't forget. I hope this helps. Also, always back up your writing on a disk. That way if something happens to your computer you don't lose your work.
