faster than walking. Now if one is overweight, one cannot exactly run. I can walk fast, but I have bad knees and I know several who are fatter than I. Now is that not a catch 22, you cannot run fast because you are overweight. Because you cannot run fast, you get overweight. So it seems to be a vicious circle. So besides a treadmill that we own, what other ways can overweight people increase their heart rate other than running?

I;m also overweight, but not by a lot. And due to many years of olaying sport, I also have bad knees nd ankles, and have had for many years. I take cod liver oil tablets for the joints and they help a lot. Swimming, or even walking in water helps me a grea deal, and I'm actually moving better now than I have for the past ten years.

I would love to, but my husband does not want to move to where there is an ocean. and we cannot afford to go to the swimming pool. And I so love the sea and the ocean. I doubt that the swimming pool would do.

That's too bad. I get great results from exercising in water.

If possible you could try walkinh in a swimming pool or in the ocean. This kind of exercise puts little or no prussure on your joints, but has the same benefits as walking or jogging.

..wow, I never heard that! I like to dance, usually start out slow, but usually can get up to a not bad pace.. This news is another reason to get some good exercise in!

Welcome. I do love dancing better than stationary bicycling. I get bored easily.

strenuous exercise is not recommended for overweight people because you can have a heart attack but a good walk is just as good as a run, swimming, yoga and such are still good exercise to do.

It seems like a Catch 22. If you are overweight, you must not move fast because of a heart attack, and yet if you do not move fast, you wind up getting Alzeimers. I do not have the other things against me like high cholesterol and a limited education, but what if I did? I would be doomed.

you will not get alzheimers just for that, some people will, just like not everyone has a heart attack or gets cancer. Stop worrying just do the exercise you know your doctor says you can do.

I can try that and see if it works. I find that I do walk slow sometimes, especially since I am practicing my singing exercises while walking, but most of the time, I run and walk.

We have stairs and the laundry room is downstairs, so I use them a lot. It does help. The treadmill is so boring and I can only be on it a short time, whereas with walking and running, I can go for forty-five minutes with no problem. I only wish I could move faster for longer periods of time, but it seems I will run for a minute, then walk for a while, and the next run is less than the first because I am getting tired and I have to increase the walks for recovery.

You can also use an exercise bike. I have both a treadmill and a bike to use. I think any activity that keeps your brain working is also good to hinder alzheimers. That is something I head on the nes recently. The more activity your brain gets, the less time it has to start slowing down or functioning. Knowledge and learning is food for the brain.

Posting online is good Alzheimers prevention. It is also correct that stationary bike is aerobic, and it is kinder on your knees than many other exercises.

We have a treadmill, but I am a bit clumsy so I dare not try it. And our exercise bike is not that good. Besides I am the type of person who likes to walk and run outside. I run for about a minute and then walk fast until I recover my breath, and then I run again. I hope that is consider enough exercise. I also do a lot of thinking then. I do like getting outside and watching the scenery. I also am not slow. Why I do not do Mall walking, I do Mall running.

Like I said in a previous discussion of yours, go for a walk. Walking will increase your heart rate but yet not put undue stress on your joints like running does.

That is what I do, but I guess I should walk fast. Trouble is I am not a fast person anyway. When I walk fast, I have to be almost puffing to keep someone from catching up on me and I am not that tall, so I do not have those long long legs that others have. I am under five foot four and well my heart race has not increased. The only time it does is those short one minute runs I have in between.

As long as I do not do what I did the last one. My husband put the boom box on the ledge, and I decided to adjust it. It went flying off, and the treadmill stopped. I think I will stick to walking fast. It is much safer. I wonder if race walking would be considered good aerobic exercise.

Well I guess I am just not going to hinder Alzheimer's disease. I have been barely able to walk since last August 07. I have a large herniated disc, spinal stenosis beside being overweight...lol I have lost over 100lbs since last year, you would think this would help but my back sees no difference apparently. I have been thinking about signing up at a local gym...figuring I could slowly walk on the treadmill, use a stationary bike, weights while sitting...etc. But every time I bring it up my mother says... "Oh, for crying out loud you can barely walk to the building from the parking lot"... And the sad truth is she is right. I do go see my doctor yet again tomorrow. I am going to tell him to find a way to stop the pain and find some kind of exercise I can do without dying of pain. I look like I am ancient when walking, I lean toward the right and if I don't use a cane I about fall over sideways....lol
Blessed Be, Mari

My husband had a slight stroke and he took physiotherapy. You could try that. I would say the stationary bike would be all right for you. I would not attempt the treadmill unless under supervision though. And I do not think your back has any to do with your weight. I heard that doing crunches might help your back. Anyway I hope your doctor gave you some advice as to what to do.

I tried dancing and running for a little while. Jogging is not that easy for me, but I gather if you move slower, you gain unless we go on another medical appointment down town. We had to park at the top, and went all the way down on the stairs and then all the way up. That was hard.

I too have bad knees, I can't run on hard surfaces, but the natural earth or a wood floor is good because it absorbs the shock..If that is still too much, then the very best is swimming..And you don't have to know how to swim to take advantage of this, they do have water aerobics and though I haven't taken classes, I have used the water to do exercises and can feel the benefit of the resistance that water provides..

What I do is to get off the sidewalk and walk on the side of the road, but right now with spring thaw it is still till muddy and I do not like to get my shoes dirty.

We had a dry wind and now it is easier to walk on the grass. Now if they only get some grass planted where those new houses are planted, I can walk on the other side of the street.

Moderate exercise at a moderate pace has the best results for keeping fit and losing weight. Never ever push yourself too hard! Can be more harmful in the long run!

Yes but it takes too long and you get adjusted to it, so I have to go faster and harder to get the same results. Like the other day, I was running more and yet my heart did not start pumping enough, and the only time it did was because I was thinking of something exciting. It does get frustrating when you know you should move faster but cannot. I think that is one of the reasons people in their middle years gain weight. It is not that they eat more, it is that they cannot move fast anymore to burn off the calories.

Hi suspenseful I am also overweight so I cannot run either .I can walk at a moderate speed as I have a brace on my left let. the doctor tells me you can get your heart rate up swimming but am not too sure about that. i know a stationery bike will do it and I am thinking of getting one soon just forthe exercise let alone alzheimers disease.I am 81 and clear minded so am hoping to stay that way as long as i live.my apt. is too small for a treadmill but a stationery bike would fit in my bedroom for sure.

I do not live near the ocean or near any lake. There is one in Manitoba and some artificial lakes but I doubt that anyone can swim in them. Our stationary bike has no resistance, and it is boring. I do walking and running, but not much of the latter as I have bad knees. I can walk quite fast, but the running I run as fast as I walk fast so that does not help that much, does it?

I think just exerting extra energy by walking quickly should help an overweight person get their blood pressure pumping. I know it gets mine going. I also throw in some cardio which has immense benefits and can help to lose weight more quickly.

I also do some weight lifting and that helps me get my heart up. I have not being doing much of that lately. I think I need larger weights. I am sort of a muscular person. I do run for half a minute and then walk for sometime, but now I find that even though I get tired from the running and walking I have to go faster but I just cannot. I think that is the trouble, not being able to get the exertion necessary.

That sounds like a good idea. I do a lot of walking down sta;irs, but I have a bum knee. I do wonder if there is a chemical thing to Altezeimers. I keep wonder if that is why it is increasing.

Since you love music, direct a choir, even if it is only for pretend. I read somewhere that choir directors had hearts that were similarly healthy as runners' hearts. The conclusion was that it came from two places: the benefit of the music on health through the mind and the emotions and the benefit of waving your arms and breathing as a conductor. It gets your heart rate up. Seeing this advice, I may have to try it myself.

You know that reminds me of that episode of the Pretender when he was conducting an orchestra. I sing and one of the exercises is waving your arms up and down, around and forward, and I find that it does help. And it is much easier and less harder on my knees than running a lot. Now all i have to do is to find out what waves are used for whatever piece is being played or the effects.

We do have an exercise bike, but I cannot see sitting down and bicycling. I did it for a few years, and I noticed no improvements. Our bike is not that good. We picked it up second or third hand and the controls that make it work harder are gone and now it is just like a regular bike but it does not move. I find that if I run a little bit, then I can get my heart rate up. I do like being outside and going places, whereas with exercise bike and treadmills, I am just seeing the same oh same oh thing and it does get boring at times.
