I recently enrolled in a gym with a program to follow. But I have to stop for a couple of days. Do you think it's okay to go to the gym during our period?

Yes, I think it's great to exercise your body at that time of the month, because it eases the stomach cramps and also maintains a regular, less painful flow. Go ahead, my friend, and exercise all you want. Tummy exercises would be especially good for you. Brightest Blessings.

Thanks, Darkwing, for the assurance. My first day was actually bad and my body was feeling sore so I didn't go. But the succeeding days were ok so I went. Anyway, I'm not doing some strenuous work out.

Hello Jemina, I think that this will vary from woman to woman. Though, MelissaRuth is correct in that exercise has been found to reduce menstrual cramping. I am a Yoga fan. And, during menstruation Yoga instructors advise specific, restorative exercises. For me personally, I find that light exercise -- stretching, walking, and restorative yoga poses actually helps a great deal at that time of the month. Though, I effort myself not too engage in hard core exercise at that time. Primarily because the menstrual process is already pretty fatiguing, and because my lower back is already strained from the additional pressure that menstruation places on the lumbar region -- being 'nice' to our spine is always a good idea. So, I focus more on gentle, invigorating exercise. If going to the gym is something that you look forward to, then I imagine that you can find a lighter, more gentle exercise routine to engage in during that time. Sometimes just the fact that we 'stick to a routine', like going to the gym, serves a great purpose. So, I think that it's really a very personal choice. Though, whatever you decide, please do be kind to your body.

Hello Jemina, I would not say that stimulating the lower body with light movement is ill advised. To the contrary gentle stimulation may often be indicated (although probably not on the 1st day of menses, unless one is in the habit of exercise during menses). Gentle stimulation to the area can be very beneficial. I don't know what equipment you've been using at the gym. However, light use of the stationary bicycle would probably be very helpful. And of course, stretching the whole of the body, including the abdomen, and full lower body is well advised. Below are a few links related to exercise and menstruation. The 2nd & 3rd are yoga specific. I only provide them because they explain which type of exercises should be avoided during menses. http://www.docguide.com/dg.nsf/PrintPrint/27306FDFA147551B8525646B00562587 http://www.yogajournal.com/practice/548 http://www.myyogaonline.com/yoga_article_98_Menstruation_and_Yoga.html

I see, what you said is very thought-provoking. I somehow was doubtful that working out could do something bad on me especially my uterus as my program is focus on the lower part of the body. Thankfully, I listened to my instinct yesterday and stayed away from the gym for a day. I'm planning to go to the gym today but as you said, "be kind to my body" so I will only use the equipments for the upper body like the dumbbells. Cheers!

As long as you feel you can do it, just don't forget to drink lots of water and vitamin.

I should have been more careful. I think it was not a good idea afterall even if others said it's perfectly okay. I tried it myself and I suffered a little bit.

yea,it should be fine.some people do bleed heavier with exercise though,i know i'm one of them.i'd just bring extra pads/tampons if you're going to workout just in case.

You're right it depends on the individual. I think plain exercise is okay but if you are using abductors which are quite strenuous for the leg muscles then it's a different thing.

hi jemina, there is no hard and fast rule that u shud not go the gym during ur periods. its just that due to loss of blood during ur periods u tend to become weak and feel fatigued. this very reason makes us feel that we shud not go the gym.one way its good to avoid from health point of view. since our body cannot bear more exertion. but people who are healthy and whose heamoglobin levels are good enough and are able to bear exertion can very well join the gym during those days. any activity done within limits are not at all harmful. so it depends on each an every indivisual considering her health.

Hello Amirev, what you said is really true. It depends on the individual and I think it depends on what sort of exercise one is engaged in. A simple aerobics maybe is not bad but using equipments that strain the hips caused me a little problem.

Yes, as long as you are feeling up to it. If you are feeling ill or too fatigued, that may be a sign that your body needs to rest. I generally will go to the gym even if I am not feeling wonderful because exercise tends to make me feel better. While I am exercising, the cramps lessen, sometimes a headache will go away, and my energy level will increase and i'll feel less 'fuzzy'. If I am really exhausted and can't even bring myself to drive there, I'll skip it until I feel motivated.

I think it depends on what you do in the gym. Using equipments like butt blaster, abductors could be quite straining. My period usually lasts for 2 days but when I used those equipments my period kept coming back for a week.

If I don't go to the gym or exercise then I have really bad cramps and feel extremely tired. If I go to the gym and just do some cardio I feel better, have more energy and have fewer clots. If you are worried you can call your doctor or ask a certified trainer at the gym for more information.

Oh, it would be embarrassing to ask my trainer because he is a male. It's all right for me to ask here even if there are male users who can see this post but I don't see them and they don't see me.

i think it varies from person to person. i think its problematic when it is very painful.i feel that. when not so much, you can do so. but in any case you must feel comfortable.

You're right. It might be okay with others but for me I found it was not okay. You see I don't just go to the gym for aerobics. I'm on a training program concentrating on the lower part of my body.

Good Grief! I thought this sort of old wives tail disappeared when I was a girl and that's over 40 years ago. You can do anything while you have your period. Menstruation doesn't make you a cripple or anything. Life goes on and waits for no-one

Sorry, I must have been absent from school when my teacher discussed this thing in class.

Yes definately. As long as you are physically well there is no reason why not. As others have said research shows that exercise is highly beneficial. It can help with mood swings and cramps. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids so that you don't become dehydrated. Good luck.

The thing is I don't just exercise. I use equipments such as butt blaster and abductor which I think were too heavy during the cycle.

I heard that we still needed to have some exercises during our monthly period. But of course, to do it as much as we could take. Don’t push yourself too much on exercise during the monthly period, some women could get cramps so I would recommend you to just have some smaller exercise, perhaps walking on treadmill is still okay but not running. Some heavy exercise programs might need to be avoided during the period.

You're right, Bongkarpasang, I have had my lesson. I thought I'm already okay and pushed myself hard. I had some spottings but only a little. I hope it's not a bad thing.

before i started going to the gym, i used to have severe pain during my period. now, it is tolerable... exercise really helped a great deal. but i dont workout on my first day... maybe its just my moods, i really dont feel like working out on my first day. then on my 2nd day, i would just do some stretching & light exercises.

Not only is it ok to go to the gym during your period, it's a wise thing to do. It helps with the cramps and keeps your body healthy and active no matter what time of the month it is.

Really? I didn't know it's actually advisable. Thanks for your kind response. I really needed to know about this thing since it's my first time to go to the gym and I heard that working out during the menstrual cycle could have a bad effect on the uterus.

there is no problem with continuing normal activity during that time of the month unless you are feeling pain then it would not be wise to do any exercise that might make you feel worse.

I don't know. I don't exercise. But other women I know don't want to do any strenous activity when they have they're period. I don't like doing strenous activites either. It just feels uncomfortable, and all I want to do when I have my period is to stay at home.
@Jemina (5770)

Well, I stayed at home because my body was feeling sore but not I feel better so I think I should go but avoid strenuous exercises.

sorry i am a man. LOL. i try to reply all email notification from my inbox either not under my interest or what as long as no one will be skip from me to reply. i tried to figure out your question. there is no scientific allegation about exercising while you have monthly period as long as you are not over tired, some says that taking a bath during this time is wrong but the doctors say its okay. a little bit confusing. LOL

Well, I heard stories about women who during their monthly cycle carried some heavy stuff and their uterus get affected. I know doctors don't believe all what our old folks say. But I'd say, I'd rather be cautious than be sorry.

Yes, its totally fine to exercise during period. Infact exercising reduces cramps during periods. But to avoid tiredness and weakness, stay away from heavy workouts and stick to lighter ones during periods. SillyLilly
