So I got a laptop a few montha ago for school. I asked the guy at Best Buy about wireless internet, and what I neede in order to have it. He sold me a router and told me to sign up for cable internet. So I did. BUT that only gives you internet within XXX feet of the router.
So 3 months into my studies, I start a computer literacy class, and learn you have to have a wireless card for wireless internet.
So does anyone know more about this? Why didn't the guy at Best Buy tell me about this? WOuldn't they have them there?
If not, where do I go to get one? How much do they cost? Will it run on my current internet connection, or will I have to have a seperate service? If I get the wirelss, and its a separate service, is there any way to connect my pc too?
Thanks in advance for your advice to this techno-illiterate

Angelwhispers practically answered your questions so i'll just go into a few more details.. c",)
"Why didn't the guy at Best Buy tell me about this?"
- the guy probably assumed you have a WLAN/WiFi capable laptop. unfortunately, he didn't ask you to be sure.
"WOuldn't they have them there?"
- if you're referring to the Wireless Receiver (card), i'm pretty sure they have it there.
"If not, where do I go to get one? How much do they cost?"
- i'm not certain on what specific stores are in your area, but any computer hardware store sells Wireless Receivers, whether USB type (for USB connection) or the Card type (which you'll need to install in your laptop).
"Will it run on my current internet connection"
- yes it will. the router you bought will let you connect to the internet using a wireless receiver. you don't need to opt for another service.

He sold me the puter, so he should have known what it had and didn't have.
I do have connection to my router, I do have the ability to recieve a wireless signal.
BUT there is a capability to have direct wireless, similar to a cell phone, guess it would be satalite. My firend's dad had it. I don't see him much, and niether does she. But he's come over to her house a couple times and used his laptop online. There's no public connection around her, I've checked with my puter. How does he get online?

i'm guessing he has an HSPDA-capable laptop. HSDPA technology is actually for mobile phones (3G) and networks but it has already been adopted by laptop makers too. so laptops with HSDPA cards can practically access the internet wherever they are.

You will need an "Air Card" this will allow you to get online anywhere. I am using a laptop right now and it uses a card I purchased from my cell phone company, AT&T. It is the Sierra wireless card. They are not cheap, mine ran about $200+ and you have to pay a monthly fee.($25 to $75) The Wi-Fi can be used at any place that has Wi-Fi connections. You can still get on line even if they don't have the connection. That's why the laptop is mobile. Right now mine is set to GMS if I want to use it at a place that has wireless connections I will have to switch it to Wi-Fi. Most laptops are card ready.
None comes with this card...Ask your cell phone company about a wireless card. I have no idea why they sold you a router, you don't need it with an "Air Card". Maybe it was just to make another sale. Look on the left side(of the keyboard)on your laptop and you will see the small slot where this card can be inserted. It's about 1/4 or less of an inch with a button beside it that is used to remove it.

Follow the instructions on the CD that came with your card. They will add the monthly cost onto your cell phone bill. By the way you can use this card in your cell phone to get on the internet on a desktop PC. You will need a small cable that plugs into your cell phone (in the same place you hook up to recharge.) There is a place on the back of your desktop where you plug in this cable. I do this sometimes when the reception isn't good on the laptop. Or if I need to recharge it's battery.

One question first was this a new computer? if it is you probably already have what you need to set up a wireless connection. Almost all new comps are sold wireless ready. In fat I can not think of any that are not unless it is custom made and you do not want it. If in fact you have to buy a card they are not that expensive most average about 25.00. then no matter where you take your laptop if there is a unsecured wireless network available you will be able to connect.
Your PC must have a modem and direct connection at your home, but it can make other computers wireless through your router. I Know this sounds confusing but really it is not once you understand the basics.

yes this is a new puter. And it does have wireless capatability. I'm not connected to anything right now. But I am within range of my router. If I take it out of the range...poof...its gone. One of my friends dad has a laptop and goes online at her house all the time..well not all the time but when he visits. When I go there, nothing. So my thought was I'm missing something. He's not hopping on someone else's bandwidth, or a public bandwidth, he has his own, whereever he goes.????

No,,,, NO you just need to set it up... Just like if you came to my house right now you would feed off my broadband.... Or if you are at school you would connect to their connection..... He is not carrying his own with him. You can go to MacDonald's and get a connection or at least most of them.. The public library... Sit outside a police station...

I do understand you. We have some customers calling us because some stores like best buy ask them to buy a wireless router for the computer so that you can avail for a wireless internet service.
Customer will call us and complain that they have to hardwire their computers to the router or switch to get it working and they want to have wireless connection. When I check their PC or laptop, they don't have wireless card on it.. I wanna "kill" best buy for that because they always forget to mention that the computer needs to have a wireless card to receive a signal...
Well, since that you have a cable Internet and wireless router, you will just have to buy a wireless card for your computer then install it.
Just setup the router to have your unique wireless network name and don't forget to secure it. Cheers!

that's right you can also get a wireless usb adapter, just stick it into your computer and install it after that you should have wireless connection.

I think all new laptops have a wireless card in built on the motherboard... Od not worry, just go back to the best buy guy and ask him if yours has one. And what ere you doing for three months.. was it not connecting through wireless??

I've had connection through my router, I'm questioning how I can take my puter to a different location, and still get a connction, when there isn't a public bandwidth.

I do not think thats possible. Your router wont transmit the connection for distance larger than the one specified by the company of the router. You have to have a public bandwidth, when you are out of the range of the router, or are there a any companies which give wireless internet service throughout out your city ?? i don't really think that its possible to have internet from ur router wherever you go..

edgy this is not completely true, The reason the salesman at Best Buy did not tell you about the Wireless card is because you do not have to have one to obtain a wireless signal. The card is only if you want to be able to get a signal everywhere you may be, even driving down the highway. But, I have had my laptop for well over a year and I just pick up signals from places such as Taco Bell, most hotels who do not have a block on their ISP, neighbors that live close by that have a wireless connection (though they are not always safe to use) should they be hackers.
But, if you are really looking into buying a card, I suggest that if you have a Cellphone company you deal with, you ask them if they have one you can get with your monthly service, or Embark has a program you can get one. The service can run you anywhere from $40.00 a month to about $80.00 a month depending on where you go to. I am not quite sure where you learned the information at from the school but, they are really wrong with telling you that. Depending on your ISP, you may talk to them to see if they have an upgrade on their internet connection. It may just be your MBps (Megabites per second) that need to be stronger.

As a lot of members have already said, a new laptop should already be Wi Fi enabled. Look in the manual or check the device manager to cinfirm this. If there is not integrated wireless port then you ca purchase a wireless dongle to fit into the USB port, which is a small component that looks similar to a flash drive.
You will require a wireless router, and if you check around the shops some of them even supply a USB dongle free with the router.
It never ceases to amaze me what terrible advice can be given by sales people in computer shops.s

i think so too, you do need a wifi connection and you only need a router if you want to have two pcs or laptops connecting to one internet connection.
maybe the seller thought your laptop already had a wifi card??? its really weird for him not to know. he he

Not sure I'm clear on your situation..You went to Best Buy for a Wireless connected Laptop..You did have wireless internet connectivity(?)..and 3 months later, you now need a wireless card? Most modern laptops have wireless connectivity built in. You don't need an additional service to connect, just your wireless Router.

You are talking about wireLESS connection right?
2 ways you can access it. A wireless card for laptops and wireless adapter for laptops or desktops.
Since you already can access the internet but you are complaining about not having a wireless card, I guess you got the adapter which is just fine.
The card is for laptops only.
And you already said it is wireless access. It is definitely only within X feet of the router.
But really, the best way to access internet is to use a wired LAN wire connection - just plug the wire and connect it to your router.
PS.: I am not sure about your area but there are some solutions that tap onto the connection points of ISPs so that you can have internet on the mobile. You bring along a small portable device plug it in and can access internet wirelessly anywhere where your ISP has a connection point. This solution is an alternative and is not too expensive relatively too.

All laptops com with wireless cards. There is a switch somewhere on your laptoop that you need to turn on and it should work but you usually have to have a computer hooked upto the router before it will work for your laptop.
