People for the Ethical treatment of animals has offered $1million dollars for the person who can create edible meat. Using Stem Cells, the meat must be tasty, edible and competitively priced and available in 10 US states by the year 2012. Includes chicken, cows, and pork.
"In-vitro meat would spare animals from this suffering. In addition, in vitro meat would dramatically reduce the devastating effects the meat industry has on the environment."
"More than 40 billion chickens, fish, pigs, and cows are killed every year for food in the United States in horrific ways," it said in its statement.

While there are plenty of moral implications and health implications, it would be a notable advance... one that certainly shouldn't be overlooked. Tet, there is already a world crisis when it comes to food, more pronounced than ever (food rioting in West Africa; markedly high prices in rice, wheat, soy, corn; nations are feeling quite a pinch one that'll last until the next decade according to some sources; increased poverty). Humanity needs as many viable solutions as possible. People must also consider that world population is growing and with more mouths to feed and less resources... options are limited and solutions must be met. If not, societies may feel quite a recoil from the food situation. More rioting, more violence, more disorder, famine, war... And even worse than this, I shudder to think if nations and leaders even entertain a more drastic solution (population control via fertility, population control via live numbers...)

Hmmm...I might, if it's the same meat we eat now with no side effects-just grown differently I guess. I guess the benefits will be good for the world, but since it's a new, out-of-the-box idea, it's just kinda wierd to me right now...O.o

I don't think this makes sense at all. Sometimes, this people go overboard. Rather than saving 40 billion chickens, etc., isn't it more humane to save millions of people who are starving? send poor kids to school? use the money to develop a vaccine against AIDS?

You are absolutely right augustine, people need to be a priority for sure. This society though is specifically for the care of animals which for some humans is a very big deal. I am concerned also about what this test tube meat will be like as a consumable food.
If governments and the United Nations were able to fulfill their intended roles and look after the people as a whole, every child on the planet would have food, water, healthcare and an education. I hope I can see this happen in my lifetime.
