Do your cats stare at you whilst you sleep?

I woke up several times last night because I could hear purring. Both times one of the cats was sitting up tall just about 4 inches from my head, staring at me and purring. Now why would she want to do that? I gave her s stroke on the head & popped her down the other end of the bed again where she settled back down. This isn't unusual from my cats. I quite often wake to find one of the other of them staring at me fixedly. It's most strange. They don't seem to be sleeping with one eye open, as cats often do. And they're not watching me as if they want something as they're making no effort to wake me. So do lots of cats do this? I've never experienced it before although I've had cats for years. I think tonight I shall wait until the cats are asleep, then sneak up and stare at them till they get uncomfortable and wake up. See how they like it LoL

I expect its a stare of complete adoration Moo...i love cats...i have a little olddog ..no cats..but Mum always kept siamese cats..and they can have quite an evil look to them...one inparticular used to hang from the lounge curtains...upside down...and just stare at you!!..scary...A while ago i looked afer my aughters cat..Poppy...and she is lovely..but because she ha to live with the dog for a week..which she saw as being beneath her..she went to live for the entire week in my bedroom...well i was a bit worried because she wasnt seeming to eat..so me being me...daft..i chopped a little bit of cooked beef up and took it up to her!!!..she must have thoght she was in the Ritz!!!..so from then on that week she ate upstairs...she popped down at night and deigned to go out into the back garden to do the bits we all need to do now and again!!!

Ruby, are you absolutely sure that you're not reading my mind & using the information you're finding there? There's just so many co-incidences going on here ... Guess what, my Mum keeps Siamese cats too! I grew up with them, and it's only since I moved away from home that I've had 'ordinary' cats. I do like the Siamese, but I consider them a cross between a dog and a cat personality wise really! Mum and Dad's Siamese are all nuts in one way or another, though sweet with it. These days, I have cats and dogs though if I'm honest the cats are my favourite. At least with cats you have some bed space left after they've crept in under cover of darkness!

Hi Moo...you speak about siamese being a cross between a cat and a dog..how true...when we were children we had a siamese ,a male, called Gregory..and he was quite the little guard cat!!..he lived on until a great age,he was an excellent bird catcher, which obviously didnt go down well with anyone...he was a sealpoint. The siamese that i was talking about in the earlier post was a different type of siamese...But then a few years ago Mum got another siamese..a gigantic anti social fur ball with a very weak blader who she called Daisy...I loved Daisy...she was timid..and a loner...but one day..she upped sticks and left home...sadly never to be seen again...wonder if a fox got her?...bless her..

No, I don't wake up to find them watching me, very often. but when I do wake up, then I tend to get some very excited cats stomping on me going "mommy's awake! mommy's awake!" Even if I just have to roll over, STOMP STOMP STOMP!

Yeah, with our dogs, its coming inside when the other roomie gets up. Because her dog is not getting along with one of the dogs, she keeps them apart rather than letting them get to know each other. So we have happy dogs coming in and happy dog going out.

And woe betide anyone who gets in the way as they'll be trampled in the stampede!

And there's nothing quite so excitable as a cat when it thinks there might be breakfast forthcoming huh? When I climb out of bed in the morning I get stampeded by the dogs as well as the cats, all desperate for me to open the door so they can rush out & make a start upon the day.

mine do this sometimes, but most often when i'm sick, like they're keeping an eye on me.the one purrs loudly when he realizes i'm awake LOL it may be we made some kind of odd noise in our sleep, and they just wanted to see if we'll do it again.

I had a cat who used to do that as well. Can't count the number of times the cat woke me up before the alarm by just sitting there and staring at me. A little strange the first time it happened though.

It seems it's just one of those weird cat things. It's funny that I've never noticed it before. What do you think they're thinking about whilst they're staring at us?

I dont think that they would of been just staring at you and you woke up. You was probally dreaming/making noises and they came over to investigate what the noise was and they just happened to be by you when you opened your eyes.

Maybe you're right. They're that nosy that it wouldn't surprise me to hear that they'd been investigating.

i love it when my cat would do that. cats know things and see things we don't / they're telepathic. so if were having a strange dream or thinking something interesting they become interested. they all can heal you. and they know if i have creme in my purse to give them, and they know when you're coming back even 1 hour a head of time. i swear they know things.

I do agree that cats seem to know more about us than you'd think. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they knew what we were dreaming about!

my cats always do that, my late cat and my current cat. it is usually in the morning, i wake with my cat staring at me...i think they r trying to use esp to wake me up so that i can feed them...but they never wake me up...they just sit in front of me, stare at me until a wake up. and when i get up, they get excited and walk happily to the food plates.

It would definately be food signals that they're sending!

My mad cat. Moomin, frequently sleeps on my bed and often settles down close to me. I have frequently opened my eyes to see him watching me, and purring. If I give him a little bit of fuss, then he will happily settle down to sleep again.

Mine actually like to sneak under the duvet if they think they can get away with it. At least from down there they can't watch me. I'm beginning to feel a bit paranoid about this watching thing now that I've noticed it!

My cats do that too. And I just love it when she does that because she has such lovely green eyes. She settles down on my chest, purrs loudly, and stares at my face with wide-open eyes. Now, don't you think that is cute?

Indeed, that's pretty cute. She must wake you, sitting on your chest like that though? Mine do walk all over me, but just when I'm awake. When I'm asleep they just stare ...
