Chick Flicks anyone?

This discussion came to mind, when I was responding to a good friend's topic on here, a few days ago. I mentioned to 'him' that I'd watched a 'chick flick,' and he commented on this.
I am a big fan of these movies, as they're pure escapism for me, with the predictable happy ending. Life has too many unhappy endings, so this is one way I have, of getting away from it all.
How about you?
Do you enjoy 'Chick Flicks?'
Do you have an all time favourite, or maybe several?
Do the males in your household enjoy these movies too?
If you are a male, will you watch and enjoy them with the females in your home ... or do you just tolerate them?

It's more about the quality than the genre. I mean, sometimes people just label chick flick in a single category as movies that "makes women and certain sensitive men cry easily". But it's always more complicated than that.
I love GOOD chick flick! I love happy endings! Why not? Life is already tough enough.
'When Harry Met Sally' is one of my favorites of all time. Someone would say it can't be categoried as a chick flick, but it has all the 'chick flick' elements - a romantic comedy, modern 'fairy tales' about finding love, lots of talky dialogue and also tearjerking. So I guess good chick flick appeal to all.

You make some good points here, and I agree ... nothing wrong with a happy ending, because life is really tough. I must say, I've never seen When Harry Met Sally, but will have to make sure I do. I really enjoy Meg Ryan's movies. Thanks for responding.

Yeah, I like those kinds of movies too. But my hubby don't so if I rent movies I have to get a shoot em up movie or some kind of western movie that he'll like and I'll rent one that I like, but I usually watch it when he's not here. He can't stand them...lol..he says their too sappy..lol. I like Monster In law, with Jennifer Lopez, The Holiday, and The Heartbreak Kid, thats a newer one. Now not too long ago we watched a movie called Fools Gold, I don't know if you could call it a chick flick but it did have Matthew McConahay in it, that was worth watching, even the hubby liked it but of course it has some shoot em up action in it...lol

It's nice that you're able to share some movies with your husband. I actually am a fan of good westerns too, and also enjoy an intense, well done thriller, along the lines of Disturbia, which I really like.
I just love The Holiday, and also Dirty Dancing. The latter is such a classic. Fool's Gold sounds interesting, and like one that I'd enjoy seeing. Thanks for sharing.

Mom I do like chick flick - well the ones you were meaning anyway! Dirty Dancing is my ultimeate favourite though I guess I better bbe careful when I say that as it could be taken the wrong way too!
The 'other' type of chick flicks mentioned earlier in the discussion are often called black boxers here - cos they are taken home in blank black boxes! lol xxx

Hi mummymo,
I love Dirty Dancing too, and have seen it many times, and own it on dvd. I'll be more aware of how I word things here, now that this has happened. You've taught me something else new, as I didn't know about "black boxers." They used to be called 'blue movies' by some, here in North America, but I'm not sure if this term is still used now. Thanks so much for sharing. xxx

I do watch them with my wife....under sufferance most times, LOL! No, she accepts that I can't handle too many per six month period, so doesn't often expect me to watch them. That isn't to say that I've never enjoyed them, there are some that I really like. One that comes to mind is 'Autumn in New York' with Richard Gere and Wynona Ryder, but this wasn't one that had the 'happy ending'! Hmm, I hope that's not why I enjoyed it, LOL.

It's very thoughtful of you to share this with your wife. My brother in law enjoys them, along with the usual 'male favourites.' I've heard of Autumn in New York, but have never seen it. I think I remember the main subject, and know what you mean about the ending. I wouldn't mind seeing it sometime, as long as I'm prepared. Thanks for your response.

I do like "chick flicks" from time to time, if they are well-done. I liked "Juno" a lot, and "In Her Shoes." Those are the ones that come to mind especially. My husband likes them, too. But then, I also like action flicks and dramas, so he gets to see things like "V for Vengence," or "Four Brothers," and I like sci-fi, so we see that, too. The "chick flicks" only come around about every five movies or so.
The only movies I don't like are really stupid comedies like "Dumb and Dumber" and horror movies.

I like a good variety of movie types too. I also enjoy a well done thriller, such as Disturbia, which I've seen a couple of times. I really don't appreciate those totally "stupid comedies," as you've put it, either. The majority of them have no plot. Thanks for your response, and welcome to myLot.

Some males I know actually enjoy some of the 'chick flick', especially some romantics. But they would never admit the fact that they like it, partly because they're afraid that people might stereotype them. And many men who hate these movies simply because they think it's a girl/woman thing from the very beginning.

I know some males who enjoy these too ... my brother in law for one, and he doesn't mind his family knowing, but I'm not sure if he tells anyone else. Also, there's a male member here, who has no problem admitting this. That's true too, that some men don't give these movies a chance, and have made up their minds without even taking a look. Thanks for sharing.

I prefer realistic movies even when the outcomes are not good. I love psychological dramas the very best. Things like dying young, or terms of endearment which had a lot of comedy and drama.

Hi winterose,
I saw Terms of Endearment many years ago, and it's a good one, albeit very sad. Although romantic movies, etc., are often my favourites, I also love a good thriller, and adventure movies too. It just depends on the mood I'm in. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not a big chick flick fan but I do watch some of them. "Steele Magnolias" being the first one to come to mind. I think it's my favorite one of the chick flick films. It has some great actresses in there along with a fantastic storyline. You laugh, you cry, and then laugh again you can't get better then that.

Oh it's an excellent film. It's one I watch a lot. Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine really make the movie. The lines they come out with along with the others make it worth it.

I've never actually seen the film, but my niece was in a stage production of this, last summer, and it was very well done. Thanks for your response.

Chick flicks are mostly love stories. But they can be about other things like illness etc. They usually have a happy, sappy ending. There are a klot of ups & downs in "chick flicks" as well. My fave is MASK starring Cher. If I recall it's about her son who has a rare disease that is slowly killing him. She is a single mother whom also has bad relationships with men and blames her sons illness. A sad ending but definitely a tear jerker as Grandpa Bob cried during this one.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hi Grandpa Bob,
I hope this discussion has helped to relieve some of yesterday's stress for you. I'll have to watch Mask again, as it's been a long time. I think that it's great that you appreciate these types of movies ... nothing wrong with that. I know you're a very caring person. Thanks so much for sharing here.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here, sarahruthbeth22. I'm not much of a sports fan, so will mostly stick to other types of programs. I haven't seen The English Patient, but have heard that it's a great movie. Take care.

I have to say I love Chick Flicks and by that I mean the "Love Story" version
A Walk to Remember &

I also Enjoy the Anne Of Green Gables Series.....
None of these are a fan of my husbands but he tolerates them on occasion LOL

Hi heavenschild,
I had no idea, but I'll never forget this other meaning, that's for sure. I've seen both of the ones you've mentioned, and they are good, except for I find A Walk to Remember very sad. I can't recall the ending of White Oleander. Anne of Green Gables is great, and such a classic. I'm not surprised to hear that your husband is not a big fan of these. Thanks for stopping by. Take care.

I do enjoy them very much as you said, they are a form of escapism.. The males in my house don't even come into the room when I am watching one.. I think that they are afraid of the competition.. Our males just don't deliver like the guys in a chick flick.. The guys in the chick flicks don't do the things that we have to put up with on a daily basis.. I am not sure if I have ever watched a chick flick where the guys burped, scratched, walked around in their old worn out shorts, (my favorites, he says), skipped shaving, dropped crumbs all over, flopped out on the couch in front of the tv or any of a thousand other things that our "normal" guys do.. So I do understand why he doesn't come into the room when one is on, and I can understand why we like these movies.. But then again, I am a bit lax someitmes and I know that I couldn't keep up with the guys in the chick flicks, bacause I might want to flop out in front of the tv sometime just wearing my old raggedy favorite clothing.. My chick flick guy night not like that..
I do enjoy the Lifetime Movie Network, and a lot of the lifetime movies.. All of these do not have "Happy endings" but I do especially like the ones that do have them.. I like the ones that have been made from books, such as Danielle Steele and others but I do not like the completely "mushy ones", some get too sweet even for me.. Have a great day and enjoy..

Hi DonnaLawson,
I actually know some males who enjoy these romantic movies. My brother in law is one of them, and I think this is great. You've captured the reason (I think too), that many men hate these movies. They feel that their significant other, will look at them as inadequate, because they can't live up to this. My (late) husband felt this way. I know there's 'little' basis for reality in many of these, but then, there are some males who can be hopeless romantics, for real. I like movies based on books too, by the type of author you've mentioned. There used to be a lot of good TV movies, made from these, but not so much lately. Thanks for sharing, and you have a great day too.
