Have you ever failed a subject in school?...

I am lucky that i have never failed any subject in school... but i was so close in subjects like: Economics... i didn't like the teacher so i always skipped his class... and would attend only when there was and exam... Business English... i think the teacher hated me... since i would always make facial gestures every time she would tell a story about her dogs... I got the lowest possible score in these two subject... and i don't know what my parents would have done to me if i failed... there was not enough money for summer classes... so i am just so glad that i passed... But now that i am older... and had experienced teaching... i think i should have done a lot better... or just gave my best so that those ugly low grades did not tarnish my school records...

Fortunately I haven't failed any subject.......came close to failing though.... Physics......I got red ink 3.00 (3.00 being the passing mark and 5.00 the failing mark). Per my professor explanation, it is red inked coz I'm barely hanging. Thank goodness the counter part physics laboratory I pass with flying colors. Physical Chemistry ....almost coz before our preliminary exam (first half of the semester) I can't seem to comprehend the subject. Imagine integrating Physics with chemistry.....I don't understand the formulas......then came the second half.....it seems as if I can understand the subject......i made up for all the failing quizzes as well as the failed preliminary exams.....almost aced my quizzes and final exam.....enough to get a grade of 2......YAHOO!........sad thing 8 of my classmates (block section of only 36 student for my course) failed the subject. Biochemistry.......i cried for coz of this subject.....almost failed but still passed.... As you can see I such in everything with chemistry or math....hated those subjects since high school.....quite suprised I made it through..... Always remember to do your best in school.........grades are important but be sure that your attitude and personality develop as well. You can be the most intelligent person on earth but if your personality sucks.....employers might just get turned off by your attitude

The subjects that you mentioned are all equally difficult subjects... and i know a lot of students from where i previously taught fail to graduate because they failed in physics or chemistry... i am so lucky that i had teachers in these subjects who were not tough on us... they made it a point to make the physics and chemistry easy... thanks for the response...

I hope you change your mind and pursue a degree in medicine... do not let one teacher spoil a good future in that field... teachers come and go... but your education will never be taken away from you...

You were lucky they do such thing.... My Physical Chemistry teacher doesn't lower his standard to us mere mortals. He graduated Summa then he studied in Germany for his doctorate and also graduated Summa. So he assumes we had the same brains as him. My course was really a good course for Pre-med. But coz it was so difficult, it had me thinking if I would still study medicine and go insane or be happy with my Bachelors degree and conquer the world.....I chose to be lazy and stick with my degree.....hehehe

Hello asertdd. Like you, I almost failed one of my subjects. It was my major subject. From what I remembered the subject was Introduction to Peace. The passing grade of our major subjects was 2.5. My teacher didn't know that, that was my major subject so, she gave me a 3 which is a failing grade already. I told her that was my major subject so, she changed it to 2.5. Good thing she did.

You bet. I thought she wouldn't. I think the reason why she gave me a failing grade because I think I wasn't able to do well in her subject. It was an easy subject but I didn't do my best. It is indeed an interesting subject.

I"m afraid I kind of failed math in grade 9. But it was the average marks that counted and I had high marks in everything else, so even though I failed, I still got to grade 10. My mom almost has a heart attack and got me into tutoring even during the summer months. It worked for me, having to stay behind while they went on vacation because I had to have my tutoring cured me of my ignorance of math LOL Passed with honors after that hehehehe

We do tend to learn the hard way. And when it comes to school, although sometimes it is true that we're struggling, often it's just that we don't really want to work that hard, or are to focused in other things, or even because we don't won't to look nerdy.

Good thing everything worked out for the best... imagine graduating with honors after failing math the other year... that is like a 180 degree turn in your studies... we all learn the hard way... thanks for the response...

Once a long time ago, I failed math and had to take a remedial course. It was no fun. By the time I got back to regular class I was way behind on new subjects and fell further behind.

Awwww.... I failed in PHYSICS when I was in college because I got busy with our other projects and I totally forgot this subject... My grades were always passing but not really okay or outstanding so my professor failed me and half of the class actually. hehe

Well, if half of the class failed... i think the fault lies in the teacher... it means that his method in teaching was not effective... that is the general rule... and he should have re-taught topics if most students failed in the exam... thanks for the response...

I have to agree with you. I took a summer class in Physica and I got perfect 1.0 because the professor is really good and knows how to explain "science" especially to those who can't really understand it. Thanks for the reply!

I didn't fail in any of the main exams...but I failed Chemistry in the class tests. I was a good student...and slacked off when we changed countries...and I was getting used to the different cultures (which wasn't very conducive to learning). I, now realize that I would have done much better if we remained in the same country.

It wasn't the curriculum that was daunting (I did the same curriculum in both countries). It was more of the lifestyle that I had to get used to...and the funny thing is that we moved to my native country then. The timings and the ways of life was very difficult to adjust to...and I just didn't spend enough time and energy to study.

Don't be too hard on youself... changing countries is a part of your life back then... and you cannot help that... and it is indeed difficult with a culture that you are not used to... i had Korean students who were geniuses in their country... but did poorly in mine... but they were able to keep up... thanks for the response..

I agree with you, I have met a lot of people who were not successful in their student's life but been successful in their respective field, so, basically, it's not also the basis for having a great career, but, it's always an advantage though! Some just didn't like the pressure and they find it boring to be in school!

i remember on my first course i failed 1 subject, that was Physics. Our teacher a cumlaude graduate but he doesn't know how to handle the class that we won't felt bored. i always skip his class, instead of listening his discussions i prefer to went on movie theater. i never regret that he failed me because that was my fault, i enrolled again the subject with another professor i am know careful and got the highest mark. last semester on my second course i have a problem with my economic subject because that was the only subject i got low grade, i am wondering why it happened that my classmate who doesn't have record that she excel in the class from our first year got the higher grade, we found out that our teacher give high grade that student because they are very close and the teacher always received gift from the student. maybe you read my discussions about this.

An intelligent person does not automatically equate to an effective teacher... i know teachers who are like that... and i think they should undergo a lot of teaching strategies seminars... but it is a good thing that you were able to make up when you took physics for the second time... thanks for the response..

College is really though with tougher teachers... it makes high school teachers seem very lenient... so extra work should always be done... but if you were able to pass high school with flying colors... then passing college is not really a problem... thanks for the response...

Well...I hate mathematics with passion...but there's one instance when our teacher conduct a test and surprisingly I'm the only one who got the right answer...odd right? Since, then I still don't like math...but I know deep inside that if I will only learn to love it...it will be much easier for me...but i didn't flunked it though...

Very interesting question from the host. To be frank, I have been doing very well in all my studies all the while, to an extent i can get a scholarship from government to study overseas. However, I failed one subject in my 5th form, when the final exam is coming, I failed that particular subject. I failed that because i never paid attention into that subject and I never bothered what the teacher was talking about in classroom. Therefore, I failed it. The teacher humiliated me, by saying I could never do this subject well in front of my whole class, I got really irritated that time. I went for tuition, and doing lots of exercises in that particular subject. In the end , I scored the highest for that subject and I am really happy about it. My fellow friends asked me to show off this results in front of that teacher who humiliated me, but I did not do so. I believe it's the humiliation from that teacher that pushed me forward, and therefore I chose to be grateful to her, but not to seek for any revenge either physically or psychologically.

Some teachers have their own way of motivating student to study... in the case of your teacher... it was by humiliating you... i have such teachers in the past... and that method really worked on me... but when i became a teacher... i use it only on students whose personality is like mine... i am glad that everything worked out well for you... thanks for the response...

I never failed a subject. In fact, I was one of those students who stressed endlessly over their grades and would do just about anything for success - not the type to go off and have fun if it meant bringing my homework assignment down a letter grade. I felt very pressured to do well (I never had pushy parents or teachers, though, so most of this pressure was self-inflicted, and an element of other outside sources - like since I had OCD and a social/emotional disorder, I was afraid people thought that made me stupid, so I felt like I had to do well to prove them wrong, and if I didn't do well, it would confirm every stereotype they had of me... disturbing thoughts like that). I was a straight-A student (occasional "B") but think had I not been so anxious all the time I probably could have done better yet. Even now I am just learning how to relax and have confidence in myself and take things one step at a time. Luckily my anxiety and hypersensitivity didn't noticeably impede my academic performance - thank God - but I do feel for people who can't seem to make the connection in school because of personal/emotional problems though, since those in a school setting can be so one-dimensional and judgmental.

Seems like you are very hard on yourself when it comes to performing academically in school... try to relax a little... i am sure nobody knows or would notice your OCD or social/emotional disorder... but it is good that you are living up to your potential... thanks for the response...

Yup, I flunked twice or thrice I believe. Remember getting 15 over 100 once when I was in fourth grade, and the teacher announced it to the whole class. She could have published it in the newspapers. ;) And I flunked again in pre-university college too. Same subject, maths. Whew! How I detest math! Lemme see, how much is two plus two? Six, isn't it? Cheers and happy mylotting!

I failed general studies in my first year of a levels, but only because i accidentally missed one of the three exams! I wasn't taht disappointed though because it isn't even a real subject... you can't study for it, though the idea behind it is good. I'm doing it again this year, and managed to get to all the exams so we shall see how i've done in a few months time. Not a U this time I'd hope!

I was treated as a good and sincere student in my schooling days. In each and every tests I got good marks in all subjects. And mathematics was my favourite subject. The other boys were not so good in their studies. But, when I wrote the class X board examination, I had some tentions that whether I wrote all exams good or not. That time I was a first class student. When I saw my result I disappointed. I didnot know what was happening with me . My friends who were weak at studies got passed in the examination. Totally I collapsed and disappointed .After 3 or 4 days I got my failed memo. I n that memo I had been failed In English with a short of 5 marks. In other subjects I got more than 70% marks. This was my first and last time failure in the career of my studies. I lost one year . But cleared the english subject with 80 % I always remembered about the schooling life. Now i am doing lecturership in mathematics.

That must have been a very sad period of your life... but then at least you were able to recover... i think you had that common case of a mind blackout because of all the stress of studying... Maybe there was a teacher who terrorized you into doing math problems... and thus... that resulted to you disliking the subject... but eventhough you hated it... atleast you were able to get passing scores... maybe if you have a little like for it... you would have been great in the subject... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot...
