I just read an article in my local newspaper stating that there was a family here in trenton NJ that was so poverty stricken that they had to resort to eating dog food, well personally i think its a lot of bullcrap, because the last time i bought dog food a can of alpo,or puppy chow costs more then human food so how can it be true what they say about this family being so poor that they had to eat dog food, like i said before i buy dog food every week for my dog and its more expensive then human food ,so what do you think ,? are they lying or what?? lets hear some feed back on this one...

Here is my take on it. The hubby and I buy a bag of dry dog food (it is one of those huge ones that you can get from a place like Costco) once a month for our 120 lb black lab. I think it is like $30 or more. So, when we go grocery shopping each week, our bill ranges from $120 to $200 each and every week so, to feed two people, we are spending 4 or more times a week what we spend on our dog once a month. We don't give him wet food or the canned food so, perhaps that can be more expensive but, I think that feeding people is more expensive.

I think it depends on how many dogs you have, we have 5 dogs, and we feed them dry dog food. We usually buy 2 bags every two weeks, they are 40 lb bags and cost about $19.00 a bag. My husband won't feed them the cheap stuff, cause they're his hunting dogs. I think we spend about 76.00 a month on dog food, thats alot of money if you think about it. Our grocery bill ranges from 80.00 to 100.00 every 2 weeks, I only grocery shop twice a month, and thats for 2 ppl. So yeah, it is more expensive feeding ppl. But of course groceries keep going higher and higher...

I worked in General Foods Inc. for 20 years. Some of that time I worked in the Gains Dogfood Department. At that time in the 80's we knew that some poor people were eating the Gains Burgers. These dogfood patties were made from corn, wheat, wheat bran, beef cheeks, beef lungs, etc. This dog food was carefully processed and cooked. It was factual 30 years ago that dogfood was being consumed by Poor people. At that time dogfood was much cheaper than Human food. When People are Hungry they will eat almost anything!

The dog food I buy is about $4.00 and it lasts for about a week and a half. I think that dog food is way cheaper than human food. Especially when buying for a family of five.

i don't really know for sure but i would have to think that human food would cost a lot more because all of the things that humans get every week to eat cost a lot of money whcih i personally know...but on teh other hand dog food is really expensive and i think that it all depends on where you buy it and what kind of dog food you get and how much your dog can eat...tehn that could cost more

Yeah..there was this elderly lady here in my town that was eating dog food all the time. They said she would come into wal-mart every week and buy lots and lots of cans of dog food. I guess someone asked her how many dogs she had and she said she didn't have any dogs, that she eats it herself cause its cheaper to buy. I myself wouldn't do it, but if your desperate I guess you can if you want to. Even a loaf of bread will cost you an arm and a leg these days.

I agree that human food can be found at a cheaper price, in a lot of instances, and that if they can afford to eat dog food, they can also afford to eat more than enough human food. Time will tell, when they start barking, their noses turn wet and their hair gets oily and shiny!!! Until that day, I don't believe a word of it, my friend. Brightest Blessings.

I don't believe it either, I have a dog too and ya the dog's food is much much more expensive than human food. If they are really they poor they won't be able to afford it.

mrpippo I think something is not right there as all kinds of dog food really cost. besides who is going to eat that stuff? Did you ever smell it? The smell alone would stop you. Maybe these people were not being very careful with their money and thats why they were broke. I think that is just a ploy to gain sympathy for that family and maybe some money donations. I would rather eat beans three times a day or spaghetti but dog food, yuuck.

Well I buy the cheap stuff so it is cheaper than human food but my dog cant handle canned food so I dont buy that stuff. But I have seen some of this animal food can get very costly. I pay like $13.00 for a 40lb bag so not so bad.

I think human food costs alot more. My dog rarely eats dog food and he likes to eat left overs when we are done eating. We can make a bag od dog food last a long time for him but human food never lasts long at all and it is expensive for what you get.

I can never understand this either! It is cheaper to eat rice and beans than dog food! You do have to spend a lot to get fifty pound bags. The cans can be bought for less, but still rice and tuna would be a similar dinner! You can also add cornmeal to your dinner dishes if you like the taste of it!

Well if they are not lying then they must be quite stupid. It is not necessary to feed a family on dogmeat. It would be much cheaper and healthier to live on a basic diet of vegetables and pasta, but presumably the family insists on having meat! Canned fish would be be a much cheaper and better alternative, I'm sure. There are usually budget ranges of cheap foods available. I'm sure pet food is not cheaper than those.
