Are you afraid of color when you decorate?

I have always stuck to the neutral colors when I have painted but used many colors for accents....well yesterday I really tried something new! I painted my dining room a chocolate brown! AND I LOVE IT!......all the while I was putting it on the walls I kept saying to myself! I love it! I don't know why I was scared to try something like this as it's only paint and can be quickly amended if I didn't like it....but it's so warm and earthy! Do you stick with the neutral colors or do you go for it with big color?

If I could be bold, I would be. I am so tired of white and brown...no, I don't mean pretty chocolate brown, I mean that brown that is too light to be pretty but to dark to count as tan or beige (although they don't thrill me either). I wouldn't make a house look like a crayola box but I do like colors. Way back when I did have my own house I painted my bathroom a super bright blue...I can't even describe it really but it was the kind of blue you'd expect to see on an m-n-m if they made regular blue ones.
I envision a home with reds, yellows and blues and ...well never mind, it would look like a crayola box LOL but in a good way! The only colors I don't think I'd use (not counting just plain ugly shades) would definitely be black on walls and probably orange...the pumpkin/spice type shades are alright but it's just not my style.

I have stuck with colors mostly because we lived in rentals for the past several years. But, even in the accents I chose, I would go with neutral. Now, my dining room is deep red, my kitchen will be a gold and my living room (2 walls) will be a green. So, no, I am definitely not afraid of color anymore.
My boys room is light blue up top and a golden muddy brown below (to match the mud in the semi-truck border...what could more perfect for a 7 year old twin boys room!) My daughters room is a 50's diner theme with turquoise below, and creamy white above with black and red accents (complete with black and white check vinyl flooring!)
My office/craft room upstairs will be a green as well. The family room will be a tan, because it is dark in there- no natural lighting.
Your dining room walls sound gorgeous! What accent colors do you have- in the drapes, table linens, etc...?

My mom has always had color on the walls so it is what I am used to. We bought our house in June 2005 and I have since painted every room at least once some of them twice. Every room is a different color too.
~kitchen is Sage Green
~dining room is Cream on top, with a deep red on the bottom.
~daughter’s play room is blue right now but just got the paint to do it Celery Green.
~living room is a goldish yellow.
~My bed room is green
~daughter 1 - yellow
~daughter 2 - 1purple wall 2 cream walls 1wall I painted flowers all over
~son’s room is 3 white 1 blue wall
~Kids attic play room is splashed with all the left over paint and has hand prints all over it.
~ My hall ways are all egg shell white.
~ Game room is white red and black for (its a dale earnhardt theme)
Sound like a fun house lol???

good on you for being creative.as you say it is only paint and if you do not like it you just paint over it.when i had my own home i had every room a different colour and it looked good.i love bright colours and if they are matched up well and you are a bit creative you can get some great results.cheers sue

hi jillhill,
though this is a girl thing, we are force in our school before to do such making design and other decoration in our port and artfolios...
i am kinda extra careful of the outcome, but no matter how careful, i am, my work are just too simple and not so special...
not good in art,

Chocolate brown is one of my favorites! And, there are so many other colors that go with that you can use to accent the room.

I used to be terribly afraid of color when decorating. I think that the fear was a result of growing up in a home that had white walls throughout! (my parents always said that having white walls made the rooms 'spacious' and that they looked and felt 'clean.') I have recently begun experimenting with color and as you stated, I LOVE IT! My son's room has black and white longitudinal stripes, with each stripe being about a foot wide. He has a bright red rug and bright red pillows on a black/white checked bedspread....it really looks sharp! I have a den that is lime green/chocolate brown/turquois and it is really sharp too!

I've been renting since I moved out of my parent's house, so I have no choice. It's funny though, I was thinking about this the other day. I wondered what it would look like to have the walls a different color. I'd like to try something bright and cheery for a change, but I know that the landlord wouldn't allow that. When we get a house (one of these days) I'm going to try to be less color-conservative.

I LOVE color! I have a pink flamingo lamp with green hair. That sounds scary, but I promise it works without being tacky, just funny. I appreciate neautrals, but I'm always drawn to color. I prefer my living room to be more loud, but I tone it down with my bedroom. I have light blues and chocolate brown. I can't paint the walls though, it's an apartment. : (

When decorating the house, I am not really afraid of the colour. But in order to make everyone happy, I stick to the simple and neutral colour rather than the big colour. In this way, it will be much easier to match with the big colour or style furniture. LOL

I love color and texture one a wall - all of our walls are painted, most with a "faux finish" like colorwashing or ragging. Let's see, we have toasted almond throughout the great room (combo kitchen, breakfast area, and den) with a rag finish, red in one bedroom and a bathroom, burgandy in the study, yellow in the game room, peach in the bedroom - LOL! I figure with paint, whats the worst that can happen, you can always paint over it!

Wow! Maybe I need your help too.....I did a sponge technique in the kitchen so it looks like stone walls....in the living room I did a glaze over off white with gold in it....(I love that one) and I love my new color in the dining room but have a feeling I'll be glazing or something over it....I am not used to flat paint!

I'm not afraid of color. Well, the walls in my house are just black and white. Because of this, I can have as much color as I want on my furniture and decor. Of course, too much of something is really bad. I don't go over board though because I don't use neon colors. But generally I'm not scared of colors.

I always liked splashes of some bold color at least here and there. But I"m afraid that my house is quite bland for the past few years. Last time we painted we had to stick with more affordable choices so we end up very neutral LOL
I want chocolate brown for my living room too :)

Since we rent I have to go with the neutral colors. I used to always think that dark colors made a room look smaller but after watching the home decorating shows for a few years I find that color brings character to a room and can really enlarge the looks of a small room if it is done right. I bet the brown does look awesome, I love shades of brown anyway. lol

I usually stick to pastel and neutral shades myself but am at present trying to decide on what colour to do the kitchen and have almost decided on a maroon colour at one end and the cupboards painted the same the other with a paler colour maybe magnolia or cream on the rest of the walls so for me that would be a bold move. I am so glad that you love the chocolate on your dining room walls. Ellie :D

I love using colours when I decorate especially my childrens bedroom, infact we are about to decorate since moving in and my eldest wants it blue so it will be nice and bright with blue and white flowers in pictures and a paler blue on the walls. Our living room we are having like a feature wall and that will have a chocolate brown wallpaper to match the sofa and the rest will be a pale coffee colour so its not too dark.
I always keep the kitchen neutral and the bathroom especially as I like it to be nice and calming.
