Hi SViswan lying can only get you in trouble. I believe if you lie about something it will only end up biteing you in the butt. I always try and tell the truth. No I dont even lie to save my own skin. And when someone finds out you have lied they will never trust you again.

That's so true. I can't really lie to save my skin either. Even a general question like 'How are you?' gets the truth from me. But sometimes I do say white lies if it means helping someone else....nothing major or nothing that will go against my principles and values...but things like 'I don't know' or 'I haven't heard about it'.

I must admit that I try to tell the truth but have done both kinds of lying in the past. Regretfully so.

Well, lying without really knowing that you are isn't a fault of yours...and you try to correct it when you can.
I don't lie on purpose and am definitely not a compulsive liar...even with my kids I try to speak the truth all the time...but there are times when I have no option than to tell a white lie...when there are things that they shouldn't know about at this age...then there are times when a friend asks me about someone else...and I know it's a secret and it's for that person to tell. I usually answer with a 'I don't know' (which is a lie).

What bugs me is that sometimes a person can intend to tell the truth but have glitches which make it difficult...
I can remember times when I was younger that my mouth would blurt out something incorrect while the mind was still processing the question that was being asked of me... I then would have to say, "sorry what I meant to say is..."
I today sometimes have found that when I am tired, stressed and feeling under pressure the memory sometimes has not been correct... I have said the untruth then because of faulty memory and not because of an intent to decieve. When I get some sleep or relax the body enough to allow the memory to function properly, and see that I have errored in my recollection then I have the choice of whether or not to correct the error... I ask myself... Does it matter either way. If it does then I have to tell the truth. It is humbling when this happens. I know that I am not alone in this.

I lie to the constant unnecessary, vain phone callers that my wife is away to save her the headache.
I lie that the Saree I hate looks very nice on her when my wife asks for my opinion especially after a petty quarrel.
When I go for shopping with my relatives as they ask how the selection of things they buy is I always lie that they have an excellent taste.
When my colleague comes to the business meeting in rags I lie that he looks smart in his dress that day.
When I am eating the most distasteful food in the house anybody I always lie that I have an upset stomach and have to eat very less.
And I always think that I am a very honest person.I don't know whether I am lying to myself.

Hi Sandhya,
I was a prolific and proficient liar in my childhood but age has withered my imagination and my creative cells are becoming blunt by the day. Lying requires a lot of imagination and courage and acting skills too (and of course the hide of the rhino) and as I said, these days I am becoming very scared of getting caught and the following embarrassment. Small situations which become easy with a little manipulation (I wouldn’t say lying) become difficult just because I am indecisive as to whether I should lie or not, what would happen if I get caught, how would I defend my action, what would people say and so on! Do believe me when I say that I am gradually forgetting the fine art of extracting oneself from a sticky situation (I was an expert on it once). Oh well…even my grey cells are aging, not just the facial muscles!

lol...I have to admit it's a fine art that not everyone is good at.
I would lie when I was a child......but I grew out of it..and I'm glad.
I'm quite embarassed by the lies I made up when I was 7-10 years old. Thinking back...I can see I wasn't very good at it....and the adults around would have caught me right then.

Normally, I avoid lying to anyone, because I feel to conceal a lie (if caught) I will have to tell hundred lies. I feel it is better to tell the truth, although it is fact that -truth is bitter. But sometimes, circumstances are such that you are forced to speak a lie to save your skin and to make the situation peaceful. I lie, when I see that I would not be caught.....LOL! Like while returning from my work place, if I forget to take any item, which was demanded by my kids, I simply say oh! I forgot, or the shop was closed, I would bring it tomorrow. In today's enviornment, when you carry a 'mobile', it is difficult to lie....LOL!
Interesting Post!

lol...actually it's easy to lie with a mobile...my husband always does it. He's says he's at the factory...when he's home and doesn't want someone to come over. He'll tell me he's started back home and is almost here when he hasn't even started!

It is also true, whatever you have written. But if you start cross-questioning your husband about his actual location (even after he has reached home) and he was telling you a lie, I am sure, he cannot conceal it, he will have to speak many lies to cover up his position. It depends upon you whether you wish to catch him off-guard or red handed..........LOL!

How would a lie help someone? I don't lie to help anyone or to save my skin. If the truth can't help, then I am doomed.I only lie to keep a surprise a secret.

The surprise/secret is what I meant. I don't lie to save my skin...or even my kids for that matter.
But I will say 'I don't know' when someone asks me about another person...I don't think it's right to give out info about their life if they didn't intend to.

Oh. I do that all the time. If you tell me your secret, I will take it to the grave. And if I have to lie to keep it, I will.

i admit that i sometimes tell white lies to save myself from trouble. most of the times i tell white lies to avoid further explanation on something or just to stop the discussion. is that wrong of me? i just don't like saying too much if i don't like it. and i also tell white lies to avoid hurting other people. i do believe in the saying that "what you don't know won't hurt you".

well i'll be the first to admit that i lie. not a lot but i do lie pretty often. especially when colleagues ask me about their new hairdo or new clothes. i can't give bad comments or remarks very well. so unless it's hideous i'll just say it looks nice on them. however, i rarely lie to my family or partner. i can't bear to let them go out and be ridiculed by others if they decide to change their look. i'd rather be the bearer of bad tidings than for them to learn of the truth from someone else.

I prefer to keep my mouth shut than have to squirm through telling even the smallest of lies. Learnt in the past, they always come back to bit you on the bum! lol.

yeah, could try that, but I prefer to say I'm not upto doing things due to the fact I'd spent the night up and down to my 2 year old. Almost the whole truth, they don't need to know that I get up to her and put her in my bed! lol.

SViswan,
To be honest, I do both. We all have to do that in some point of life. Recently when I was late at my hostel for the reason that I had to stayput with my friend who was feeling depressed, I lied. I lied that my friend was sick and I had to call the doctor. This I did for I know the kind of person the in-charge is, she would never understand.
Sometimes I feel sad. If people would have been a little more sensitive my white lies would have been saved. lol..
great!!

I know what you mean...but if the hostel in-charge would understand...some people would take advantage of it too!
I say a little white lie to help others...never for myself. I'd rather get into trouble than say a lie to save myself(and it's happened quite a lot too..lol).

Honestly speaking... i have done both... lie to save my own skin.. and to help someone else... i am not proud of them... but there are situations in life when we cannot help but lie... white lie is still a lie... but to lie for the greater good... i think... is an exemption to the rule...

How do I look in this dress? I so love this dress! Well? Expectant look from a young person. Good time to lie if you hate it or find something you appreciate about it to say. Lying to not hurt someone's feelings.
You have to do this, this and this, but the place of work won't let me and my boss is not at my place of work. Good time to lie or have a creative, will try going for me.
Who was stupid enough to do something this assinine?
Best time to lie. You're probably in deep trouble!

I do lie to my son a lot (sorry we dont have any more ice cream, come on go to bed its 10pm but in fact its 9pm that sort of things) when it comes to other people I find it hard to lie I feel so quilty that I end up confessing. Even with white lies lets say my father tells me to call a store and I forget and I will say yes I called but they dont have that I will call ASAP out of qiult.

I beleive in the policy of honesty but at the same time I believe in being practical.
I have lied for myself but I have lied much more to save others. I lie only when it is absolutely necessary even if it is for myself.
I have seen people lying even for the smallest of things which is not acceptable to me.
I know a person can never be 100% honest but we can make every effort to be as honest as possible.

I detest lying and I try very hard not to do it ever. I have found that the best way to save your own skin is usually to tell the truth. The truth has a will of it's own and it has a way of coming out, if you lie and get caught your goose is cooked. Better to skip that and just own up.
