Do you dye your hair? I have always wanted red hair but was born with white hair and the color has darkened over the years to a dark brown. Awhile back i decided to have it lightened up a bit because i was tired of looking in the mirror and wondering whose hair was on my head! It couldn't be mine because i have always had some shade of blond. I had it lightened but it still wasn't "right" so now i'm wondering should i just accept the strange hair on my head or maybe try a different color altogether (such as red). Have you been happy with the results of dying your hair. Did it look odd? or just express how you see yourself? Please HELP!!! Should i just accept the latest color nature has given me or help her out a little?

My hair has always been a mousy brown colour and over the last 6 years I have had highlights put in them, at first it was just a blonde colour to help lighten my hair. Then I went to two colour highlights, I had blonde again and a caramel colour which looked good! I have decided to try dyeing my hair a brown colour as it might last longer than the blonde. I have yet to try this and wasnt bought up using dye kits so am nervous about using one!! I know they are simple to use but using something for the first time is always nerve-wracking!!

I know you will laugh at my suggestion, but maybe you could try one of the hennas that Lush offer? They are far nicer to your hair than dye kits, I went into Lush yesterday and the sales assistant there had beautiful hair and she uses Cacas Brun by Lush and it is a lovely deep brown which looked really shiny.
It can be messy but worth it, and it isn't permanent so nothing to be nervous about. Alternatively if you're planning to dye your hair darker there are loads of temporary/ semi-permanent dye kits out there that won't damage your hair.

i never laugh at good suggestions. My hair has turned dark, dark brown over the years. I really want it lightened up but am skittish about letting anybody bleach it or wharever it is they said they would have to do to be able to lighten it.

I don't dye my hair now as it is very dark and going lighter would involve bleach which really dried my hair out. I would say it looked okay when I dyed it, until it really went dry and strawlike.
I'd say there's nothing wrong with changing the colour of your hair, and try red if that is what you want. Lots of people dye their hair and look great. If you want to try a natural method of dyeing your hair, try some henna for a nice red (Lush do a great one called Cacas rouge which is highly rated, check out their website for customer reviews!).

It was mentioned by the Lush addict (same person!!) creative_genius should have shares in the place the amount of soaps, lotions and things she buys from there!! 10 minutes later in the shop and she still deciding what to buy!! I have to try and drag her out by distracting her with food or another clothes shop!!

Like you, I was born with white hair that gradually turned brown. I don't dye it at all. I do have to pluck out the occasional grey hair though ... and there is more plucking necessary as time goes by, so maybe I need to start dying soon (hair, I mean ... not departing this mortal life - it's not THAT bad). I recently did some home streaking (again, I'm taking about hair) and it doesn't look bad. I dyed my hair a lot as a teenager and went blonde, black, purple and just about everything in between. Now I'd prefer not to have to do it until the grey starts to really show through - more for reasons of laziness than for beauty.

I don't know how old you are, but my husband who is 61 has white hair now, and he always had dark brown hair. He insists on dying it. For years, before I was going out with him, I used to cringe at the dark black his daughter would put in his hair. It looked horrible. Now I dye his hair kind of a light brown, just a couple shades darker than brown. Black or dark brown just doesn't go with his aging skin tone. As you age, your skin, your eyelashes, your eyebrows all change in tone and tint. You can't expect to dye your hair back to its original color and look right with the new tones of your other features.
I know a woman who was dark brown as a young woman, but as she aged and started to go grey, she did brown with blonde streaks. Over the years she has gone gradually more and more blonde. Sometimes when dark haired women go blonde they look really weird, but this woman (I suspect with the help of her hairdresser) has gone for a gradual change and it looks great on her. She is also nearly 60 I think.
I am going to be 48 in a few months. I had very dark brown almost black hair growing up. As it is starting to get more and more grey strands, I have been going for full color dye jobs, not streaks, but I go with a lighter color than my original natural dark brown. Right now I am close to auburn, but not too red. I would like to go to sort of grey/brown/blonde but I think it would be too stark if I go there right off, so I am going to ease into it over the next year or so.

I was born with chocolate brown coloured hair wiht auburn highlights and the first time I dyed my hair blueberry black (in my mid 20s) I LOVED IT!! in fact I loved it so much I never went back to my natural colour...I've also had my hair (part of it) a shockin pink, i've had it braided various electric colours, I've dyed it black then bleached out chunks and put in electric pink..then dyed it chocolate cherry which was cool casue the parts I'd bleached out sometime earlier REALLY showed the cherry..Right now (just dyed it last week) its jet black and come Wed or so i'm bleaching out my ends and dying them electric blue! LOL
I say GO FOR IT..TRY SOMETHING NEW! if you've always wanted to try red..then go red and have fun with it!

I have dyed my hair frequently over the years and been all colours and shades except green. I have had black hair with purple streaks, black hair with red underlights, purple hair, blue hair, even flourescent pink. If you want to dye your hair red, then go ahead and give it a try.

Well cjgrooms, I'm not sure how old you are but I feel you should dye your hair any color that fits your mood. You are only as old as you feel. I recently dyed my hair a beautiful auburn brown and it looks really nice. However, I'm thinking of going dark brown almost black. My haor is very short now. Much differnt than my picture to the left of my postings. In that picture it is my natural color.
I've tried blond, that was a disaster. Being that I'm half Puertorican, I feel I should stick with my natural dark shades that compliment my dark brown eyes.
So go for it and try all of them. See which one you like best.
Again, I;m not sure of your age but my mother has finally stopped dying her hair and letting her natural gray grow out. The salt/pepper color is very becoming of her.
Just be careful, don't use too many colors too close together, it could do chemical damage. Use lots of conditioner to prevent breakage and fried hair. Good luck with experimenting.

Well, one part of me says go for it. I know you have always liked red hair.
The only thing is let a professional do it. At least the first time. And make sure they use more than one shade of red.
I think it's neat that they have kits now the give you multiple shades of the color you pick. It looks natural.
I have an indian friend who has her hair done all the time. She is naturally black headed but when she colors her hair she uses a lighter shade of brown or something. It's the most natural dye job of anyone I have ever seen with black hair.
I have a lot of grey coming in around my hairline. I mean it's coming in fast these days. I thought about doing something with it, but I'm not big on the upkeep and maintenance.
About the only thing I will do to mine once and awhile is highlight it. That way the dark roots aren't as noticable as it grows out.
There is nothing more unnatural looking then someone who dyes their head strait black.
