Do Your Cats Sleep With You?

Mia, on the first day we got her - My little kitten, Mia at 4 weeks old.
Very cute, very little, not yet vicious =P

It's the common stereotype for cat owners to let them sleep on the foot of the bed, or somewhere in your bedroom, and I was wondering how many of you cat-loving Mylotters such as myself allow this, or your alternatives. From the moment I got my kitten, Mia, I knew that she wouldn't be sleeping in, or allowed in my bedroom once my boyfriend and I were heading to bed. She has free-range over the rest of the house until I get up in the morning, and she can sleep in there all day (and often does), but I'm not comfortable with having her get used to sleeping with us, and I'd have to keep the bedroom door open for her to snack/go to the litter etc. So, what do you do with your cats at night? Do they share your bed, are they trained to use a bed of their own? (We never mastered that with Mia, she wants the couch, my underwear drawer, our bed or nothing =P)

When I was growing up, I always had cats. None of them were ever allowed to stay in the house overnight. They could come in and out as they pleased all day long, but when night came, they were sequestered in our enclosed porch. Well, there was one exception to that rule. The only cat who was allowed to stay inside all night long was my Siamese. She was allowed to sleep in my room with me. She had moments when she would want to snuggle as we slept. But most of the time, she preferred to sleep at the foot of the bed. Now that I'm in my own place, I still have cats. They are strictly indoor cats too. But they don't get to have free roam of the house at night. I've unfortunately had some difficulties with them getting into things or making messes when left to their own accord. So again, I've gone back to keeping the cats housed in the porch so they can't get into whatever they're not supposed to. I'd really love to be able to let them stay out and about and even sleep in the room with me if they so desired. I just can't stand the thought of things getting messed up while I sleep. Oh, and speaking of sleeping places for the cats--back to my Siamese. It was so funny because she had one favourite spot to sleep when she wasn't camped out at the foot of my bed. If ever I wanted her, I knew I could find her on the back of the couch on the right side. Never the left. Always the right. And how did I know it was always the right side? First, that was the side that was constantly covered in cat fur, no matter how much I'd try to groom her to get the loose hair off. That, and when you looked at the couch when she wasn't on it, there was a permanent divot dug into the back of the couch where she'd smooshed the padding/cushion down from spending so much time there. Too funny! lol

LOL! Sounds like with Mia, there's no need for a snooze alarm. :-) Thanks for the response, and here's to having a super day today! *hugs*

Lol, cat-weathered furniture. That is really cute =D I would probably have Mia outside during the day, and maybe some of the night (if I installed a pet-door), if I had a covered porch/veranda, but until that day I don't have much choice. She's fine at night, and doesn't break anything or knock too much over, but in the morning, once she hears my alarm and I don't come out straight away to give her food and attention, things start falling off benches =P They know just how to get what they want - I think humans could learn a thing or too from them, in "negotiation"/manipulation =P Thanks for your response, and have a great day!

That's true, actually, and yet out of habit, I hit snooze, and then get up to check on what she's doing and give her some lovin' (=P) and then the alarm ends up going off while I'm getting ready =P *hugs* back atcha =D

Yes, Dolce(my Siamese) is allowed whereever she wants to go. The only place she is not allowed is the counters in the kitchen and the dinner table. She doesnt really like them anyways, and they are hard. She sleeps in the bed with us at night, at he foot of the bed. Her other favorite place is a box top that I got from Costco. She sleeps in the top of the box while we are eating dinner and watching tv, then goes to bed when we go. Dolce does not have a bed of her own, she takes over ours, regardless of whether we are in it or not. :)

Funny that you should say Dolce doesn't like hard surfaces, because Mia would curl up and sleep on cement at the drop of a hat =P Thanks for your response =D

I'm partly jealous and partly feeling sorry for all these people with a lot of cats/pets in one house, but I know if I had the space I'd be exactly the same, so mainly jealous =P

One of my cats Lilly likes to sleep with me. She's very high strung and doesn't like to associate with the others. If another cat came in to sleep with me she sleeps on the radiator next to my bed. But if she hasn't been chased away, she's usually there the next morning.

cats must not sleep with people it can be the reason of many diseases cats must sleep separated from any body.

That is true, although I suppose it depends on the health and hygiene of the cat. If I were worried about diseases, I wouldn't have a pet =)

Nope I don't sleep with my cat that I have, I have tried that and they might start at the foot of the bed but I would always wake up with her at the top of the bed usually on my pillow or my head and once across my neck so no cats in the bedroom. I don't allow then in the bedroom occasionally she might get in there if the door was left open but I usually get her out. She is ready to pop with kitties anyday now which we are excited about(me, not hubby)But I find that kittens bring alot of joy to a home and liven up everything. It is a joy just to watch them play. Your Mia is a beauty.

I know it won't take long for them to whittle their way into our hearts. I had a cat the first year I was married 1991 and it is identical to the one I have now so I named it the same name prissy..Because she acts so prissy.

Thanks, I absolutely adore her. She's quite majestic =) Awww kittens!!! I absolutely adore little kittens, my MyLot name, Malyck, is actually what I planned on naming the first kitten I got, but I wasn't allowed to get her at the time, and then when a friend's cat had Mia's litter, I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, and they gave her to me as an early Christmas present =D I'm excited for your girl's kittens as well! =D

I can't believe someone shot her?! That's absolutely terrible =( Oh, that's such a cool story as to her origins, I'm sure the two of you are very close =D Mia looks just like her mother in markings, but her hair is shorter and I have to say she has a much more attractive figure/face and an elegance that her mum was lacking. I was actually really lucky that they gave her to me, because it turned out that she was their favourite, too, but as soon as I saw her, like I said. It was love =P My boyfriend named her, and they called her by her name for the next 4 weeks until I was able to bring her home (after searching all over their house to find her stuck under the couch =P I hope that you get the beautiful kitten that you want and that it's not too hard for you to let go of the other babies. =)

Well out of the 4 cats that we have its not uncommon for at least two of them to sleep on my bed with me...My youngest cat, Ostara, actually comes downstairs to get me if i'm not in bed at a certain time which is funny really...She sleeps with me every night pretty much...Come to think of it the only cat that DOESNT ever sleep on my bed is Maggie..in fact she doesnt sleep with any of us..She likes the back of the sofa instead LOL

Moomin originally slept in a cat bed I made for him, lined with an old sheepskin rug. However, he soon discovered my bed and now that's the only place he will sleep at night. He will happily curl up on the sofa during the day but as soon as my partner and I put the lights out at night, he's upstairs and on our bed.

Lets see, the roomie came in as I was getting up from my nap today and I had, one cat by my head, one cat by my waist, one cat on top of me, one cat on my legs and another leaning on a leg. I have had up to 11 cats in my twin bed with me, but it was a really COLD night and I didn't have a heavy enough blanket so I didn't mind, the only places I was warm was where the cats were.

Nope, she didn't even get to see the 11, I only figured it out by the feel and the discovery of #11 when she jumped off the bed - that was my semi-feral, Ronnie - guess it was cold enough she wanted to lay on something cozy.

hmm my cats have free-range over every single place of my home. they'll pick and choose where they want to spend the night. if they decided that they want my bed, i'd have to shift to one side for them. if they want my parents' bed, my parents will actually 'contort' themselves to make sure there's enough space. cats rule my household and we have no complaints! in fact, we feel happy that they choose to sleep with us. guess we are really crazy about our cats. :D

The cat on your avatar is absolutely gorgeous. I'm a sucker for eyes on all creatures, and that cat right there has some beautiful ones =D I'd probably be happy to have Mia share our bedroom at night if I didn't like to have my bedroom door closed, but seeing as though I do, she doesn't get to join us =P Thank you for your response! And my I ask, how many cats do you have? =)

28 Apr 08
firstly kitty would like to thank you for your compliments. :D she is my eldest girl, currently 9yrs old. i have another two boys, both 7yrs old. if you want to keep your room door closed, you might want to consider installing pet doors. it's basically a flap with a plastic frame. so your cat can go in and out of your room as they like. in my case, i'm forbidden to close the door as my longhair boy will just stand outside and meow to be let in. if i let him in and close the door, he'll meow to be let out in 5 min max. he just want the door to be open. seeing that cats reign my household, i don't really have a choice. :p

Haha, I think that the sooner we submit to and accept the fact that cats reign the better =P I'm loving watching Mia growing up, and I look forward to having an even better relationship with her when she's nine and hopefully forever after that. I think that I've had enough loved ones die now, so the rest should be immortal =P That sounds fair, don't you think? I actually thought about the pet door, and might look more into that, even then I can still stop the flap from opening if I really don't want her to come in =) Thanks for reminding me of that option, and have a lovely week!

my cat sleeps with me on my bed, but he is free to move around. sometimes he walks around the room, sits at the window, looking outside, goes into the bathroom, maybe even goes downstairs. but usually when i wake up, he is sleeping by me on the bed, and usually staring at my face, willing me to get up and feed him. mia looks cute.

haha, thank you, you're actually the first person to comment on my little angel/devil combination. The important thing I've learnt with her is not to let the cute exterior fool me, she can be feral =P Cats have a funny way of looking at you, I think, I always find that I'll look up from what I'm doing in the kitchen or on the computer or when I'm reading, and from somewhere in the room, Mia will just be staring at me =P

It might be, although she's usually more direct when she wants something and comes over and pesters me until I pay attention to her, and then if it's food/water/litter then she'll go to the appropriate place to show me her complaint =P It scares me how intelligent she is sometimes. =)

Hi there, My cat and kitten sleep in there own beds in the dining room. I don't hold with pets going upstairs. We have a middle door than leads through to our hallway and stairs to upstairs. We have taught the cats that they are not allowed to go through the doorway. The kitten still likes to try and slip through the doorway. We just call him back, close the door for a while and then re open the door. On the whole they are very good and rarely go through the door. I think it depends on who you are, the outlay of your house and if you like to have your pets to have free run of your house. I personally think all animals should have there own beds in a closed off room.

I agree, there's a lot of factors that determine how we let our pets behave and the places they're allowed in the house. It's so cool that you've trained your cats not to go through the doorway when it's open, kudos to you!

When I am at home, my cat sticks to me like glue! When I go to bed, he immediately follows. When I sit down to eat, he wants some too. When I sit down to work at my laptop, he bats at my fingers, and tries to get on the keyboard.

When I had a cat, and I had two of them, not counting the time I was living at home with my parents, the cats had their own place to sleep. All the cats I had were outdoor cats, so they slept where they liked and disappeared during the day. They only came back when they wanted to eat or when they wanted attention. For some silly reason even though I am a dog person, cats like me.

I've always been a dog person growing up, but the cats have converted me in the last couple of years, as more of my friends have had cats and I've met some really lovely cats. They seemed to love me, and eventually the bond became mutual =) I like how independent cats are, although I'd never let Mia be an outdoor cat, I'd worry too much, and that's not the type of animal companion I was after - I like that she's always here, even if she's ignoring me at the time =P

Maybe there's a reason my kids call me the Crazy Cat Lady. I have three cats, and they do sleep with me. One usually sleeps above my head with one paw touching me either on the shoulder or on my cheek. Another likes to sleep between my legs, and he refuses to budge even if I turn at night. He's 17 pounds, and the weight feels like a ton after a while. Then there's my free-spirited turkish angora who will sleep wherever she feels like it. Sometimes it's in the bed with me, or on the floor, or on the windowsill above my bed. It depends upon the weather or her mood.

My cats are allowed to sleep in the bed during the winter months, but in the summer when we have the mosquito nets up they can't be trusted not to climb them so they're banned from the bedrooms. My two cats play quite happily with each other outdoors all day, but at night they don't like to be close to each other so one take sup residence with my eldest son, and one sleeps on my bed. The one that sleeps with my son likes to burrow down under the covers! It's getting to be that time of year ago when the nets will go up again soon, so the cats will get the bumsrush shortly.

I bet that my cat would have an absolute field day if I bought us a mosquito net - it's almost impossible to keep her off our fly-screen door during the day, as well as the screens on the windows! I know I shouldn't worry about it, but if Mia goes under the covers during her naps in the day, I always worry that she won't be able to find her way out and she'll suffocate. But I can be a bit silly =P Thanks for your comment, and I hope that you have a lovely summer, while Australia "enjoys" one of our coldest Autumns =P

My Josie sleeps with me. She not only purrs very loud, she also snores. Peaches sleeps in a towel closet in the bathroom; we have to leave the door opened for her. Paisley sleeps on the computer chair. Arthur sleeps in the underwear drawer. I have trouble sleeping without Josie.
