Do you cats stay out at night?

I was wondering whether other people keep their cats in at night, or put them out? I like to keep mine in. I encourage them to come in at dusk, feed them, then they're in until morning when they get let out again. Around here we have a number of predators which I'm sure would be capable of taking a little cat, so I do worry about them being out at night. Last night, for the second night in a row, one of them refused to come back at dusk. I was still calling her at 1am, but she appeared on the doorstep when I opened up this morning happy as Larry and wanting her breakfast. She's currently curled up in a tiny ball, absolutely dead to the world, on my bed. It was obviously a hard night, whatever it was that she was up to! So what about you? Cats in, or cats out? And why?

ive tried to get my 2 cats to stay in at night for 2 years but they sit at the back door crying! Not sure if they have somewhere better to be or else they just like being out all night but they seem happiest out at night so now i just let them be

Welcome to MyLot Gary! I think cats enjoy hunting at night. Either that or there are some cool cat parties around your way which your cats are desperate to get to!

I let my cats out in the morning and they come back inside during the day if they want to. The one thing I always try to do is to get them inside at night.

We have several cats right now. Most stay in all day and night. We have two though that are out door cats. I would prefer they were all indoor because we do live on the suburbs but these two we tried and they would bolt out the door once it was opened even a fraction. The one comes in and out as he pleases. There are nights were he'll come in but often especially when it's nice out he stays outside. Our other cat though doesn't like to come in at all. She wants to stay out. When the weather is really cold we have to bring her in ourselves. She tolerates it then but she wants right back out as soon as possible. They both have food and water in the garage. They go in there all the time so they also have shelter. They come up for love and attention. Thankfully we've been lucky and they seem to watch for cars. Just have to hope it continues that way.

What is weird is neither cat tried to go out until a couple years ago. They were indoor cats completely and then all of a sudden they demanded to be outdoor ones. Well the garage isn't that cold since this is Florida so that helps but we have an area for them to curl up at that has a blanket for them.

Isn't it funny how some cats prefer it outdoors and others in? I can understand them wanting to be out all day & night in summer, after all the world is full of hunting. But in cold damp weather I think any self respecting cat should be tucked up warm by a fire or radiator, not lurking damply in the garage! Each to their own though, funny animals!

Hi GreenMoo, thanks for another lovely cat discussion. Regarding my cats, they belong to an aristocratic family; at least, they think they are. ;) They don't tolerate any nonsense from me. This means, if I want them to stay in my house, I have to listen to them. They go out as they like and come in as they like. I leave some windows open for them. The wall below the windows is now fully covered with paw marks. I don't even get the time to sponge it clean. Do I mind? Certainly not! Sometimes, around two hours after midnight, I feel a small bite on my fingers or a claw in my feet and I know kitty is back. ;) Lovely having a cat, isn't it?

Your cats think they are aristocratic? Well mine think they are human LoL The place I always have paw prints is on the windscreen of the van. Now why they would need to be on the roof of it is beyond me, but obviously there's a very good reason that I'm just not bright enough to understand.

Well I have 8 cats and one goes in and out, mostly in, one stays in all the time just cause she is so scared of everything, that I have just never let her out. Then the other six all came to live with me, so they are feral cats. I have had them for six years and a couple of them now come in the house and may spend part of the night. The others would rather die than stay in the house at night as much as I would like them to be nice and safe inside. We do have another cat that comes over and fights with mine which is very frustrating but not much I can do about it. He belongs to the neighbor and is a Tom cat and just fights with mine. So I kind of let them do what they want to do, even though they do get hurt some of the time.

Oh, so you are one of those big-hearted souls that feeds stray cats. You are very nice to do that. Very generous indeed.

It's hard to stop cats doing what they want really isn't it, particularly if they've been feral.

So grandmothers don't just spoil the kids, they spoil the pets too ;-) Poppy must love it if she's allowed out on the town when you're in residence. Think off all those cat parties she can get to. Way to go, Poppy!

I would like my cats to stay inside but A: indoor litter trays stink and B: my cat refuses to stay inside! After our other cat Nigel was hit by a car a few weeks back we tried to keep Isabella inside. Well she climbed up the curtains and scrathed the blinds in the loungeroom and would not stop meowing and howling until we let her out. We have a new kitten called Alfred and he hasn't been shown outside yet. We have a back deck that is all barred off so Isabella can jump from downstairs to up on the deck and through the back door into the house. (back doors are constantly opened because the deck is fully enclosed). Alfred can go out onto the deck during the day fro some sunlight and fresh air but he's too little to know how to jump down. I guess once he gets a certain age and size he'll follow Isabella's lead and that will be it, he'll be an outside cat.

I also started putting the litter tray inside when they come in. and outside in the morning, when they leave. Have any of them ever brought you and presents? my cats bring have brought me mice, lizards, and birds.

I think cats are happier outside myself. Just think of all that extra stuff there is to investigate and hunt out there? It's just night time that I worry, but of course the cats don't agree with me. I have a litter tray that comes in just before I go to bed, and out first thing in the morning. I hate it, but it's better than little 'presents' in the morning!

Was that an intentional thing, to keep them in, or did the cats sort of evolve that way? I've never had an entirely indoor cat.

It was intentional. Tho for a while my cats were inside/outside because The Doctor ate part of the veneer off my front door trying to get out. I figured that I'd better let him out rather than have him eat his way out.... But the only cat I have left from that time is my outside cat, Mitten, the rest have been inside only.

That's funny :-) One of mine is currently trying to work the insulation off the bottom of the door. How she thinks she's going to escape through that 2mm gap she'll create I don't know, but it keeps her occupied of an evening. You wouldn't believe how much noise that can make in an otherwise silent house though int he middle of the night ...

It depends on what my cat wants to do. Sometimes he goes out and stays away for 3 or 4 days then will come dragging in and sleep during the day. Sometimes he won't ask to go out at night and sleeps in the house.

I'd worry like hell if they disappeared for 3 or 4 days on the go. Sounds like he's an un-neutered male to go wandering like that?

The last cat I had was very much an outdoor cat, I hated the fact that come 10 or 11 at night he would want to be out for the night. Even when it was freezing cold outside and winter he would not stop in. I used to think that one day I would find him frozen in the garden so I put loads of old bedding in the shed for him, so at least he could go and curl up in there if he wanted to and keep warm!

I think cats like to hunt at night, so they naturally wake up around then. I just don't like the idea that they may be the hunted as well.

I get mine in at nights because there are coyotes in the hills here. If it weren't for that, I'd let him come and go as he pleases.

I've never heard or seen a coyote. Is keeping the cat in when it's hazy or overcast a pollution thing, or does that have somehting to do with the coyotes too?
@GreenMoo (11834)

I imagine a cat would make a nice snack for a coyote. Do they come close to the house?
• United States

Occasionally they get pretty close. I've seen them on the street once or twice but, more often, I hear them. We live on the top of a small hill that is green (well, brown, most of the time in southern California). We usually hear the coyotes after a police car or fire truck goes by down the hill. The sirens are pitched about the same as a coyote howl. So they answer. It makes a good coyote detector. The cat stays in over night (most of the time, had a bit if a scare recently) and when it is overcast or hazy.

my sister's cat does stay out at night but he rings the doorbell when he wants to come in!!! i swear it is true. i did not believe it until i saw it with my own eyes but he stands on top of a bush right by the front door and puts his paw on the doorbell to get inside and alert them he is there. so funny.

I have two cats, both came from the RSPCA. The older cat was 2 years old when we first got him. In the beginning as he was new to us I liked him to stay in at night time so I knew where he was. As he is now 4 years old he pleases himself as to weather he stays in or not. We don't have a cat flap so have to open the door to let him in. I shout for him about half an hour before I go up to bed, then give him another shout 15 mins later. I give him one last shout at the end of the half an hour and if he hasn't come in then he is out for the night! I don't mind him staying out all night as he is a big boy and is always waiting on the step to come in in the morning. My kitten who will be a year old around september, goes in and out as he wishes during the day. He was never allowed out after tea as it was dark. Now the lighter evenings are coming , I put both cats out no later than 6pm ish, sort children out in bathroom etc call the cats in no later than 8pm. Thet normally both come running in and thats it until the morning. If big cat wants to go out again I let him out, the kitten isn't allowed out even if he askes. Both cats have been done so don't spray. I think it totally depends on the owener of the cats and the area that you live in. As the lighter evenings get here I shall leave kitten out longer. I want him in at night time but ashe gets older if he happens to spend the odd night out all night I don't think I shall be too worried as he will def know where his home is. Hope this helps you.

You sound like you spend your evenings back and forward to the door to let the two of them in and out LoL Yup, your area makes allot of difference. I'm not worried about cars like some people are, but there are other nasties which I don't like thinking about instead.

I agree with you NewWay. The cats can enjoy themselves outdoors during the day, then be safely indoors with me at night. They don't always agree with me of course! Do you also have difficulties getting the cat back in at evening time?

I definitely prefer my cat to be in the house at night, I worry about her if she's out especially if it's a cold or wet night. She's normally pretty okay about coming in - and I don't let her out after about 10pm anyway - but sometimes she refuses and we have fun and games with me outside in my pyjamas trying to grab her while she runs rings round me!!

All four of our cats are indoors only all the time. I would never let anycat outside. There are predators, cars, fleas, other cats, unkind humans. It is just too dangerous for my cats out there. I would never rest easy unless I could count noses. My cats are all spayed and neutered, so there is no mating urge and their health is better for it. They are fed well, so they need not hunt. They are healthy, happy cats who are safe, warm and dry.

I agree with you 110%. My point exactly. Better safe than sorry. They are like our children, and who would let their children run out into the street to play at will, and risk of their lives. Can't win against a car, I say.

My cats don't go outside - ever. It would kill me if anything ever happened to them so I keep them in the house safe and sound at all times. When I was a child a couple of our family cats (and one dag) were hit by a car and killed. I couldn't stand to have that happen now. Did you know that the average life span of a cat that goes outside is less than half that of an indoor cat?
@GreenMoo (11834)
7 May 08
That's a scary statistic. I suppose the same would apply to us humans too if we stayed at home all the time though. i think my cats enjoy themselves outdoors too much for me to consider making them permanent indoor cats, but I am very lucky in that where I live is fairly safe. Not everyone is that lucky.
