Do your dogs beg at the table?

I cannot stand dogs begging at the table. It drives me bananas. But here's the thing ... they looks so adorable with those big hungry eyes that I often shoot myself in the foot by giving them table scraps before their feed time. Are your dogs fed table scraps? Do they hang out under the table just incase you drop your dinner on their heads?

hello GreenMoo, we are lucky that our dog is not like that during meal time, you have to call him if you want to feed him or he will feed himself with his dog food. he is very particular with a food that you will feed him that he will smell it for a very long time and sometimes it is so crazy that you will just let him have it later. he is also not the kind of dog that will snap a piece of steak in your hand, like i said he will smell it first. our dog eat human food since he is a puppy, when we are in china i cooked him him own food coz i prefer that he have meat than others on it and it seems to work great to him coz he is not over weight and just have lean meat on him i guess almost 3 years of chicken and beef helps him out to stay slim LOL now that we are here, he is half and half (table foods and iams). btw, he dont like to hang out under the table not unless you ask him to go there he is pretty cool when it comes to eating, haha. takecare

hello again yea, sure is well behave when it comes to eating and doing his business coz he knows when and where only. though he have some problem of being friendly to everybody other than me, we think it is because of the trauma he had when he was shipped here as well as when we fly from shanghai to beijing coz his cage are crashed and he was like way too scared then there is another incident plus the fact that he comes from a puppy mills in china, so we are trying to understand why he is very snob and not friendly at all but other than that he is very sweet and playful. btw, i have read that potatoes are not good for dogs and i have witnessed that on my own he will be sick for whole day (throwing up and upset tummy i guess) if he ate a potato (unless it is a very little mashed potato) and our friends dog as well so i try not to give him any of it same goes with tomatoes, garlic and onions. but i guess it all depends on how strong your dog's tummy is. i just read in the past what food is good and bad for the dog and i try to watched it out for his own benefit. takecare

Your dogs sounds *sooooooo* well behaved. You must have trained him well when he was a puppy. I sometimes cook up some extra potatoes or rice or pasta for the dogs, but otherwise the only human food that they get is our leftovers.

Oh yes, they do. I had 6 dogs and I havent met any dogs that doesnt beg at the table specially if you are eating chicken or meat or fish. But if you just eating veggies, they just sleep at your feet or doing something else.

Now my dogs will beg for absolutely *anything*, whether it's veggie or not. I reckon they'd catch & eat a raw cabbage if you tossed it to them right!

When I have the self control not to sneak bits to them, I save scraps and put them in their bowl so that they can have them before their evening meal. It seems silly to just save a scrap or two though, which is one of my justifications for feeding them little tidbits!

My dogs do not even know what talbe scraps are when I get a dog the first thing they learn is not to beg I tell them " NO BEGGING DOGS " and start teaching them to put thier head down because I hate a beggin dog, I dont care if they are next to the table or under it but they have to put thier head down, if they pick up thier heads I give them a look and tell them " EH " and the heads go down its really simple to train them for this.

Yes, you have to start with small treats for every thing that you want them to do and I dont mean people treats and do it over and over again until they get it down, then keep it going for a week after all the way with praise every time and then slowly replace the treats with just praise.

I salute you! You seem to have the dog training thing down to a fine art. Tell me, do you think it's possible to train a dog not to beg once it already has bad habits?

When I was at uni I lived in a house where the landlady had a dog. Every morning he used to put his paw on my knee while I was eating my toast, make little whining noises and stare at me with big pleading eyes. I couldn't resist him and always used to share my breakfast with him. Luckily my landlady didn't mind, although I notice she didn't do this herself! I guess if he'd been my dog I might have got a bit annoyed about it and not want to reinforce the behaviour but I'd never had a dog before and it was a novelty to me, and he was so sweet, so in my eyes he could do no wrong, lol!

I don't expect she minded. She probably didn't do it herself because she didn't want to share her own breakfast :-)

LOL my best friend has two dogs. One is a rescued retired greyhound, perfectly trained and well behaved. the other is a mutt, boisterous and rambunctious. Guess which one begs at the table? Every time my partner and I go over to their house for a meal we know that Billy the Greyhound will be begging for anything and everything from the table while Sam, the mutt, will sit patiently and wait in his bed until he is told he can eat. Both dogs now get their food in the kitchen while we eat our meal, but Billy will always try begging, turning his big, soulful eyes to us as we eat.

Those eyes are a thing aren't they?! Do you think Mummy dogs teach their young exactly how to portray the maximum amount of pathos, or do you think it comes naturally? LoL

I love dogs but I have never allowed them to hang out under the table. The one dog we had years ago did tickle me. The door to the kitchen was right next to the dining room and what that particular dog would do is lay down right in the middle of the kitchen door and watch us. Even when we dropped food on the floor he never shot under the table to get it. He knew he would be in trouble.

I can't say I really *allow* my dogs to beg either, but they do anyway & there doesn't seem to be any way to stop them other than putting them out.

I never allow dogs near the dining area. I have a dalmatian at home. She knows me very well. If she sees me with a plate in hand, as I bring food to the living room to my husband who is watching the TV, she'll just move off and go lie down under the sofa. She'll not get up from there till we finish eating. She knows after that she will get what is due to her. Even ifthe guests are tjere she will never ask or beg any from anyone. If I just stare at her she'll move off even if she wants anything. No need of saying anything to her at all. I have seen , pets scratching and nibbling at ankles and knees for tidbits. I just hate it.

Wow! Your dog is VERY well trained! mine will sit int he corner whilst we eat, but it involves allot of yelling and foot stomping to get them to stay there!

She sounds well trained! Mine are too impatient to wait I'm afraid, though they have to. If there are plenty of scraps I set them aside and they get them before their evening walk.

my dogs know when we are eating they are not aloud in the room but when we have finished they can have the scraps in the kitchen! i had to teach them that because i cant stand dogs that sit there begging and wingeing when im trying to enjoy my food!

I can't either, but unless we send them outside there's nowhere else to send them.

No begging allowed at my house, but once in a while one dog or the other will lay under the table. I never give in, d oit once and they will be begging forever.... I never give table scraps, unless I add a few carrots or healthy veggie at their feeding time..

Our dogs enjoy being given a raw carrot to play with. We found this from the lady who looked after them once whilst we were away. Eventually they eat it, but have lots of fun in the meantime. A bit like a bone I suppose.

Our dogs have always begged for a taste, but they have also always been trained that when they were told "no more" they knew we meant they were not getting any more and left rather than waste time waiting for food they were not getting. At least that worked up until we got the Shih Tzu... he knows that if he just paws at the air and looks sad that he'll get another bite. He has leaned, however, that "No, it's chocolate" means not to even try. So when we tell him it is chocolate he'll go lay down and not beg for any.

Oh, heck yeah, all the time. The four of them surround me(they each have a designated area)and they just sit, staring and drooling. I'll admit I'm guilty of tossing them something everynow and then but I try not to make a habit out of it. They don't bother me but I do have to be careful, turn away for a moment and the food is gone, with all four dogs just sitting there looking innocent.

the trouble with having lots of pets is that you need lots of scraps! If you feed just one it's unfair, so if I have one piece of scrap to feed them then I end up getting matching pieces off my plate to make it fair!!

Oh yes! I have a pet which was a spitz and it was the most greedy dog I think I ever came across. It likes hogging on almost anything that is tasty. It never touches its own dog food (we have a real tough time) and every time any of us were having anything, and I mean ANYTHING, it would just saunter across like the grand princess and look at us with demanding and accusing eyes…as if we are committing a great crime by leaving her out of the ‘feast’. She eats sweets, noodles, pizza, ice cream, popcorn whatever. She never ceases to surprise me with her gastronomical choices.

I do give mine table scraps but he's quite picky with his food so he won't eat anything and usually doesn't hang around and waits for anything. If we eat something really tasty he might want to get some of it but he always stops begging when he's told so I don't really mind.

Oh my dog was a pest for begging! I had my dog for years before my hubby came on the scene and so he just had to put up with her, but he hated her begging, she would sit there and drool and just stare at him! I always used to save her something, but he never did the meanie. I do not have her anymore, sadly she passed away, but I do miss her such a lot.

I'm sorry that you lost your friend. At least your dog just used to stare at your husband rather than activley pester him. I really get annoyed when doggie heads bump me under the table. It wouldn't be so bad if the dogs were small, but big dogs do not belong under tables!

If you can train them not to beg from day one it is allot easier.
