... some small corn tortillas. What do I do with them? My husband says when eating at a Mexican restaurant they'll give you tortillas as a side instead of bread or whatever, but I've never been given any that way. I know you get tortilla chips with salsa, but not the small soft tortillas themselves. So ... what do I do with these?

Well thats the fun part just find what you have and cook it up. Ground chicken or beef is good I mean there are just so many options out there. Heck I like mine even with just a bit of cheese but not so filling that way.

Use them for a king ranch casserole or mexican lasagna. (I will let you do the paid search listed on both of our profiles to find recipes for either of those...) For sure, allrecipes.com has a few different recipes for the king ranch, I happen to know that as I just looked it up last week. I have never had them served as a 'side' either...sorry hubby. Other than that, I don't know- corn tortillas aren't my favorite so I don't do much with them...

Yea, I can look I suppose. Remind me to ask you about those searches anyway. One other person did mention about them being served as a 'bread', so I guess that does validate what Tom said. I don't do Mexican often, so I guess I just haven't ordered the right thing at the right restaurant or something.

Well here's a great website that has a lot of ideas on using tortillas http://www.cookingcache.com/cat/mexican_recipes/tortilla_recipes/default.aspx I read some of the replies you made to others...You have hamburger, beans, taco seasoning, onions right? Make some kind of chili with those ingredients..do you have tomato sauce? Chili is easy to make...once the chili mixture is done just place it in the center of the tortilla and wrap up like a burrito.

I have had these served at Mexican restaurants. They serve them warm, in place of bread or rolls. You just butter them and roll them up to eat. Not bad, really.

No, I'm sure they're quite good. I just don't know what to do with them! So you don't really make anything WITH them?

It hardens my heart to think that ppl dont know what to do with the tortillas that are given to them at a meal; what they are for is to use in place of bread and a fork., you pile the stuff on it and eat it; It is your fork. then you have the sopapila and then you should add some honey, for dessert.

I was born and raised in New Hampshire in 1957. I never even saw a tortilla until my first visit to Taco Bell in the 70s.

My father used to yell at my kids, telling them they didn't know how to eat, because they were eating like their dad's family. Only, my parents didn't have tortillas, they had bread, and the kids would use the bread like their family used tortillas. It didn't bother me, but he saw it as a sloppy way to eat. He didn't have much couth when it came to trying to understand cultural differences. They weren't eating with their hands - they were simply putting the food on the bread with the fork and taking bites. I still eat that way with many things. I told him if he liked they could simply go hungry instead because I didn't think what they were doing was wrong. He was also the kind to yell if you ate a sandwich without butter because he used butter on everything and everyone who knows how to eat a sandwich knows you use butter (in Dad's world). Kind of a hard head. People, in general, though who have had no contact with any other culture wouldn't know what to do and the other methods would seem odd to them. It's just that most people have enough manners to keep their mouths shut if they don't know and to ask in order to learn. My father didn't. Sopaipillas are wonderful!!! Little pillows of fried dough with a squirt of butter and honey inside them. Mmmmm!!!

I bought some of these for the first time the other day, also. They were a good price so I decided to give them a try. When I got them home I had the same question .. 'what do I do with these?' What I did was put some ingredients on a plate and fill the tortillas with them and eat. Sometimes it did get a little messy. I got creative with the ingredients. Eggs, tomatoes and salsa... chicken, sour cream and irish potatoes... beef, sweet potatoes, etc.. I don't know if I used them right, but it tasted right to me.

I know around here you see these used to make Smaller Mexican tacos. They usually take 2 and warm them up then add on the meat, and the toppings and then serve them like that. You might want to check for a Recipe online or something if you are not sure what to do with them, or for different types of Taco recipes. This is the only suggestion I can think off. Unless you were to warm them up put butter on them, and serve them with like Chili instead of corn bread?

That's basically what we ended up with, something between a taco and burrito. I had taco seasoning, refried beans and hamburger, so cooked that all up then had onions and sour cream too.

You can make mini taco pizzas. just add the beef and seasoning and cheese. Dip into sour cream, taco sauce or salsa.

Since they're soft, how do you think they'd hold up? I don't know if you could hold onto something like that if it were flat.

For a treat, you could cut them into strips, or leave them, and fry them for a few seconds in oil and put sugar and cinnamon over them. I used to do this all of the time for my boys, but now they just eat them too fast to do that with them. Good luck with what you decide.

That sounds real good, but I think would be better with regular flour tortillas, not corn. Might give it a try, though...

Well, Ldy. You could make tostadas. You fry the tortillas in a bit of oil until they are crispy and then top them with refried beans, seasoned meat, chopped lettuce and onions, a little salsa and shredded cheese. If you don't have refried beans, then make some (not quite authentic, but acceptable in a pinch) by taking a can of beans (pintos, kidney, black, chili) and processing them into mashed beans. You can season them if you want with a bit of garlic salt and a little cream to make them creamier - just do it until they taste right to you. Use the beans while they are hot. Put the beans on first, top with meat (which can be cooked with the onions and seasoning or the onions can be put on raw), then the veggies, salsa and cheese. If you want the cheese melted, then keep the veggies off and put the tostadas under the broiler to melt the cheese and then top them off with the veggies and salsa on your plates. Another thing you can do is cut the tortillas up into little triangles and fry them to make your own chips. Be sure to salt them to taste. Thirdly, if you like enchiladas, but don't want to be bothered with the amount of work it takes (it is a little tedious), make a layered enchilada casserole (looks a bit like a Mexican lasagna). I can't yet cut and paste here, but there are so many recipes online, some for the oven and some for the crockpot. Or, as suggested, you can cut the tortillas into strips and cook them in a spicy chicken soup or any spicy soup for something similar to Taco Soup or Sopa Seca (dry soup - or Tortilla soup). There are recipes for those online as well, if you don't want to experiment. The quesadillas are always a good idea, although I like flour tortillas better. You can add whatever to them - buffalo chicken strips, chopped green onions, leftover shreds of roast beef or pork. They are a very accommodating sandwich - serve them with sour cream, salsa, guacamole (only if you have it and like it), etc. You can top them with chopped lettuce, etc, if you want to eat them with a knife and fork, but they are pretty much just a grilled cheese sandwich that you can dip in the toppings. If you serve them as a side for chili or whatever else they would seem to go with, then be sure to heat them in a pan or on a flat griddle (very LIGHTLY oiled) until they begin to brown and blister, flip them once and wrap them in a dish towel to retain their heat and moisture. The same is true for flour tortillas. Enjoy!!

You did a good job with the corn tortillas. I was satisfied at the end of it all. If you hadn't fed me pancakes for breakfast I could have put scrambled eggs and potatoes in the leftover tortillas. Hey ... MA ... what's for supper?

I make enchiladas with corn tortillas. You can either roll them or layer them in a cassarol. Chicken enchilada are the easiest. I mix one can cream of mushroom soup, one can cream of chicken soup, one small can green chilis and however much chicken I have (I usually use left over chicken and cut into small pieces)and heat. Place a layer of tortillas in the bottom of a cassarol dish. Cover the tortillas with some of the soup mixture, sprinkle grated cheese over the soup mixture. Continue with another layer or two ending with cheese. Pop into the oven until mixture is bubbly and the cheese is melted. I have to add this isn't an authentic Mexican recipe, but my family loves it.(we're of Irish heritage, living in a Tex-Mex area).

Your husband is right. Most authinic mexican resturants or cafe will ask if you want flour or corn trotillas. Have you ever watched Fraizer? The old one where he is singing "i don't know what to do with toss salad and scrambled eggs". It gave me and idea! Make a simple toss salad. Lettuce, tomato, grated cheese, taco sauce, scrambled eggs. Serve with some of those little soft warm tortillas. Wa la yummy! You can make any taco with either corn or flour tortillas. Not all corn tacos are hard shell. I always have all 3 kind on hand.

Small corn tortillas - cut them into triangles and deep fry, this makes the tortilla chips you get in restaurants. put a little salt on them when they come out of the oil. Also, you can make enchiladas - YUM! wrap them around chicken, beef or cheese or a combination, cover in enchilada sauce and bake ORRRRR you can make a tostada, deep fry tortilla, then load up with toppings (kinda like a pizza)

this is what you do with them... you use the tortillas like a fork or a spoon, you tear a piece off and scoop up a bite and eat it. thats why they bring tortilas to the table .

You can fry them in oil and make some tacos out of them, they can be really tasty!
