i believe that saying. it can either be eros or agape. if two individuals are deeply in love, sometimes they tend to be too clingy. another situation is when a partner falls out of all, wanders around then finds a new one. in these circumstances, if you really love that person, you'll let her/him go to pursue her/his own happiness (even if that picture of happiness does not have you in there).
for agape, like a parent who's letting go of a daughter like in marriage. it's hard but one must learn to let go.

I think truer words have never been spoken. If you love someone and they are unhappy being with you, your love for them should seek their happiness not your own. I think it always applies.
