I'd have to say a PS3 and an HP Desktop are really 2 different things. One is a game console and the other is a computer. It would depend entirely on what you need.
Computers are mostly used to do work and browse the internet, they can be used for watching movies and gaming but that's not their primary use. If you want to have a good gaming experience using a computer, you usually have to get massive upgrades and additional softwares which means additional cost.
On the other hand, PS3 is especially for gaming and watching bluray movies (which you can't do with a desktop). You can also browse the internet with it but it's different from browsing with a desktop.
If you want to play games then buy a PS#. If you need to do work (that needs really advanced technology) and browse the internet then buy a desktop. But if you already have a computer and you don't need to do any work that needs advanced computer technology, then I suggest you buy a PS3 and use the rest of the money to do a little upgrade on your computer.
