Ok so I don't need to lose weight but my husband really does and he wants to. He has reached a very unhealthy weight which is causing many health issues and we need to work on him getting down to a healthier weight. However, it seems no matter what diet method we try, nothing works.
I have the opposite problem. I cannot gain weight. We have to keep high fat and calorie foods around for me or I get to an unhealthy low weight. So I cannot seem to help him with this issue and have no insight into it.
Our friends have given us tons of different pieces of advice but it's so hard to know what really works. We can't afford those pricey diet programs either.
What I need is some solid advice. Do any of the weight loss pills really work? Should we watch calories and fat or carbs or all three?
Anyone with any diet or weight loss advice? I appreciate it.

My husband and I went on Weight Watchers for lent and it has worked for both of us. We got a point book from a relative who had an extra one and a slide chart, so I didn't have to pay and join, we are doing it on our own. We basically watch our portion control. I have a daily pt allowance of 21 and my husband 34. When we first started it was hard for me because I am use to being able to eat what I wanted but that is why I was 35lbs overweight. But we stuck to it and now I can say I lost 22lbs and my hubby has lost 27lbs. So if you really want to lose the weight you will stick to it. Weight watchers is more of a lifestyle change then a diet. You really just need to be aware of what you are eating. (Like butter and white bread.)With WW you are looking for cal, fat% and fiber; that is what determines what the pt value is.I will tell you we did not join a gym and do not do any regular exercising. We like to walk but that is about it soooo. Hope this helps and maybe you know someone that is on WW and can borrow there material. Good Luck.

Thank you for your input. We don't have any friends on this program but I did find a pretty neat online site that does help us keep track of things for free.
Right now we are focusing on lowering his calories, fat, and carbs. We are trying to get a better fiber intake. We are making sure he drinks more water and less soda. And we are working on getting him more physically active.
I appreciate everyone's input on this. I will post again when we see how all of this does for his weight. May be a few months before an update because we all know weight loss takes time.

Check out www.drfuhrman.com .
If you load up on fresh veggies and fruits for most of your food intake, I think your husband will lose the weight and you will, if it is really necessary, put on healthy weight.
A diet will never work- one has to commit to a lifestyle change of making healthier food choices. That is what it is about- health. Is this food optimal for my health...? No...? Don't eat it. Do that 80-90% of the time and the health (and weight) benefits will indeed come.

Those are very tricky scenarios sister, as a family you are dealing with two contradictory situations-you need to gain weight and he needs to loose it-this mens you both mus run a two dietory regime in your home to cope, he must go for low fats, while you for high fats! Very interesting-I can only hope you both see your dietrician for expert advise

The best way to losing weights and fats is thru exercising.. NO need for gym workouts, just pure jogging for a good 30mins for at least 5 times a week.. Follow by have 8 hrs of sufficient sleep, which is very important.. One more important thing is to eat breakfast.. Because when u eat breakfast, u wun have the tendency to eat more during lunch.. and also, cut down on snacks.. If really wanna snack, eat fruits or almonds nuts.. They are high in carbo and low in fats..

i guess don't eat plenty of foods that has carbs in it. and if you're gonna eat your dinner, do it every after 6 and to help your body become fit, you can also do some aerobics or jog every morning for at least 45 minutes - 1 hour

The best thing I think is walking. Maybe start walking daily or a few times a week for 30-40mins.
i wouldn't bother with pills and stuff.. not inless its something ur doctor told you to try.
i recently lost a lot of weight by walking and working out
i also watched what i ate but not really. I eat a lot of chicken though.
watching calories, fat and carbs is smart and it'll help him to lose weight.
but don't go cutting cut out all the carbs. you do need some!
just make sure he doesn't try and over do it at once too
and remember that its ok to something sweet or junk food still just not all the time and have a smaller size and don't eat it right before bed!
I wish him good luck!

I totally believe in Weight Watchers. It is very healthy and balanced. You will be eating what you should be eating and in the correct proportions. What WW does is organize everything so you can just follow it to a tee and lose weight. I lost 35 lbs. on WW and I think it is the healthiest life eating plan I know of.

the key to a successful weight loss are commitment & discipline. It is very important that you stay committed to your goals & have the discipline to continue doing what you've started. For startes, think of an activity that both of you enjoy doing. Like me, i love the water but i dont know how to swim. i am already obese. so last february, i've taken some steps to start being active. i enrolled in a swimming class... i also joined some dance classes because i really love to dance! last month, i decided to start going to the gym. i hate sweating but im really surprised that i loved doing some cardio workout! by the way, i also purchased some workout videos... those that i think i would enjoy doing. people started to notice that i am losing some pounds & my clothes started getting loose. so i got the motivation to continue. since feb, i lost 10 lbs! its not that much... but its a great way to start living a healthier life, looking & feeling much much better!

i've never been obese or anything, just a little chubby, and i don't know about others, but i like to get fit naturally, using no form of vitamins or anything like that. anyway through my experience to get more fit, regarding my diet i completely took snacks out of my diet, cut down on my carb intake, eat low fat and low calorie foods, drink lots of water, no soda whatsoever, and eat lots of fruit and vegetables with low or no dressing or added bacon bits etc etc. regarding my exercise, through my personal experience, if your husband wants to lose fat, he needs to do a lot of cardio exercises. the best thing that worked for me was jogging. i jogged for 30 minutes every day for a week and lost so much fat on my body. i seriously saw results in a week. of course i was eating right at the same time. to lose weight and burn fat, you have to burn more calories than what you're taking in, or so that's what i've heard. and a very note is to be very careful when you exercise. make sure your husband doesn't over exert himself at the beginning. when he gets the hang of it though, he has to keep pushing himself. you get the most of your workout when you push yourself to where you can barely go on, but DO NOT do that when you've just started. well anyway, all of this information is through all my personal experience. i may be right or wrong on some things.
as for getting bigger, maybe you should take in more carbs? carbs store fat i believe, making a person more thick. however, eating fatty foods doesn't sound like a good idea for you. you should probably just eat normal healthy foods, but just add a little bit more carbs to your diet, and eat larger portions of meals than what you usually do. hope i helped!

A high fibre, low fat diet usually does the trick. Has your husband tried Audrey Eyton's F-Plan Diet? I did it years ago and it was brilliant. It's a filling, satisfying and very nutritious way of losing weight. You do need the books though, and I think they are still on sale. Audrey gives a lot of very good dieting tips and how to cope with hunger pangs etc. in her books. Also he'll need to do some exercise. The F-Plan Diet is high in carbohydrates, but there's good carbs and bad carbs - the good ones, taken in moderation as the book advises, will see the weight dropping off in no time. It's the only diet I've ever been on where I've never felt hungry. I lost 8st on it in just over a year, and I certainly wasn't starving myself. I was having my 5 portions of fruit/veg per day. I'd advise steering well clear of dieting pills, as most of them are addictive - and if he did use them, all the weight would immediately go back on again when he stopped. You also need carbohydrates (the good ones) in your diet to keep your body functioning properly.

I'm currently using Paul Scheele's Ideal Weight Paraliminal CD.
The idea behind this genius is that our bodies give natural signals that says when to start eating, when to stop eating and what foods to eat. For some reason people who are overweight (or underweight for this matter) are unable to notice these signals or respond to them. When listening to this tape, Scheele talks to your inner mind, teaching your subconscious to be your ALLY. This absolutely worked for me! Most people are overweight because of what's currently going on in their inner mind. The CD instructs our mind to quit sabotaging our bodies and take care of it once and for all. I listen to it now at least once a day, and for some reason I frequently feel light and peaceful, and my cravings are gone! Goodluck!
