Do you leave the light on?

When your kids our spouse are not yet home and it's dark out, do you leave the porch light on for them? When I first moved in with my husband, he always turned the light off when he went to bed and I had to turn it back on if my sons weren't home yet - one usually worked at night. He didn't understand why I'd always leave the light on for them. When I have to work late, he never turns it on for me either. I make sure that if it's dark out, the light is on if someone's not home yet.
Which do you do?

We have a motion light so I dont have to leave the light on its great. I feel safe and I dont have to waste energy leaving a litle on late.

There are animals around here also that would cause problems. And our bedroom is on the same side so we'd see it go on and off all night long.

I wish we could do the motion sensor light, but we'd have to situate it so close to the door that it would really be inneffective. We're so close to the street that the cars would set it off all night long.

Oh, that's too funny!!! Maybe if I put it to my husband that way he'll surely think about it!

i never leave my porch light on because it has a motion sensor on it... so even though my hubby goes home late at night after is work, the light will turn on automatically for him for a certain time... so he won't be in total darkness... i do swaitch on one of the light inside the house though as i am a bit scared of total darkness if i am alone at home...

A motion sensor light would be great, but since our house is so close to the road it would probably come on every time a car or person went by. My mom has 2 at her house and they're great!

we always leave the light on because if not it would look pretty scary outside our house

That's true when it's dark out, you can't see what's going on around you.

i always leave the outside porch light on if my husband is not home yet. it is really dark outside and you cannot see your hand in front of your face so fumbling for your keys would be next to impossible. on the rare occasion i go out though he does not return the favor.

That is so strange that mostly the women leave it on for the men, but not all men leave it on for the women...

If I do, I will choose light on. As family member need it. My mother always come back late, so I leave it. So do my mother, some time I come back late. If your husband don't like it, you may choose the way the one of the mylotters told you already, change your light as sound control. It would be better.

That is very nice that you each leave the light on for the other. That way you're not groping around in the dark.

Oh yeah, I try not to leave lights on when I don't need them. When I'm working late, I'll call my husband when I'm on my way home, he could just turn the light on then...

I would leave the lights on for someone if it was going to be dark for them when they got back home. I am always in though so the lights are always on!! My hubby would do the same as well, he does all those daft little things that would normally be the sorts of things a woman would usually think of, he is good like that.

We joke with my husband all the time that he's a "girly guy" because he's usually the one that does the thoughtful stuff. But for some reason this one just escapes him!

My husband never thinks to do this. It's been 3 years and even though he knows I leave the light on for whoever isn't home yet - and sometimes it's him - he doesn't think to do it for me. I guess he thinks that it's light out when he gets home so he doesn't turn it on.

When the kids were younger, I'd wait up also, but any more when I'm tired I fall asleep.

I know it's "wasting" energy, but it is so much easier to see in the dark when you get home. The last person home will usually turn off the light so it's not on all night.

I dont actually have a light outside our our apartment that I can turn on. There is a light in the hall that is on a daylight sensor, so the outside is taken care of. I leave a small lamp on right inside the door however, mostly so we can see where to set our keys/junk. Its a little bit different for me no, however since gas is so astronomical here, and I have a flexible work schedule I have been driving my bf to work and picking him up to save on gas. I have to go that way to work anyways, and it doesnt really matter when I get there, so why not.
However, when I lived at home with my parents, my mom always left the side light one(the door that everyone came in through) until everyone was in the house for the night. You can see it as beig symbolic as well, but i think it was mostly for safety(ie to make sure it was family coming in the house, not an intruder). It was definitely nice not having to find the key by moonlight however.

Yes, it's both symbolic and for safety. We've always done it.

its quite irritating if we come home late at night and start searching for switches as soon as we enter the room!!
i stay in a rent room and the main switch in my room has a switch for a bell to communicate with my landlord. sometimes i accidentally press that switch while trying to switch on the light of the room.
so i always keep the light on if someone is going to come late at night or if i have to stay out late!

Whoa, you have a pretty good reason to keep that light on! I think the landlord might become a bit irritated if it happened all the time.

When I'm in the house with someone I don't leave the lights on. In fact, I usually fuss at my roommate for leaving all the lights on. But, when I am alone... totally different story! It's a comfort for the light to be on when there is no one there.

I like to leave the light on when they're due home and it's dark. Sometimes I'll leave the bedroom light on so when I go there I don't bump into things.

Yes we generally leave the light on coz its pretty dark outside. Whenever anyone from my family goes out and no one is there at home , then we leave the porch light on.

when we first move in the city we always leave the light on the garage on so as to easily see if there is someone wandering on the street suspiciously, but when the city government install 2 fluorescent lights on the post beside our house we got enough light for the whole front yard and reflecting up to our front door so feel we don't need to leave the light on.

Now, that's nice! We don't have many street lights so it's still a bit dark at the house.

Yes, we leave the porch light on at night if our son is not home. When my husband is late getting home or is called out at night to work, the light is left on. When I worked at our local asphalt race car track and I would not get home until anywhere from 1 to 3 am the light was left on for me.

I don't think his parents ever left the light on for him. I'm going to have to ask them. I remember at first my husband really thought that was the strangest thing to do. Of course if he's going somewhere and knows it'll be dark when he gets back, he'll turn the light on before he leaves...

I leave the light on for my husband most of the time- sometimes I forget. I think it is nice to do for him, he does the same for me. It's one of those little ways to show you care. Why make him grope around in the dark, to save a few pennies? If that's the concern replace the bulb with a fluorescent bulb so it doesn't use as much energy.

We have the energy efficient lights all throughout the house, I think in ever place we can. It really just doesn't occur to him that it's dark out there and we can't see too well.

If someone's still out, I definitely leave the light on. I even leave it on if it's too dark for the paperboy in the morning. I know that I just feel a little safer when I come home in the dark and the light is on. Not only that, but we live in a rural area and you can't see anything if there's no light on. I'd probably trip and break a leg or something!

I can usually see enough to get to the door, but if it's locked it's hard to get the key in and all. Maybe next year I'll try reminding him again and see where I get with it...

well, when i used to get home really late my mom or somebody in the household would leave the porch light on becuase one day when it wasnt i fell down the steps and regreted everything becuase it was my fault it happend. It was snowing out that day and it was winter and i was 17 and was delivering papers to peoples houses, well as soon as i got home i remembered something that i didnt notice til i steped up the first step. "i forgot to put salt down." and once again i fell, hard. i'd have to say that after that experience i wouldnt really have a choice to leave it on or not. I'd just do it becuase it makes it easier for people to walk when they know where there going or just when there trying to get to the door. its makes sense to leave the light on.
