Personal Mission Statement.

Mission statement is defined by Wikipedia as a brief statement of the purpose of a company, religious group or organization.
Or in the case for this discussion your personal purpose. In the light of a few events, here in mylot as well as my own life, I was thinking about a time a couple of years ago when I was asked if I had ever developed a mission statement of my life. At the time I was flabbergasted by the question, as no quite frankly I had never looked at my life as having a mission per say.
Sure we set goals as a family, and my husband and I certainly knew were we wanted to be 5 and 10 years down the line. But never had I once set a mission for myself independent of my loved ones.
I can not of course leave you all with the link to the work book I used at the time but I have managed to find one very similar for those of you who would like to take a look and perhaps think about this for yourselves. I have looked it over and it has many of the same tools that we used during the work shop.
http://www.rochestermnchamber.com/pdf/lgr_missionStatement.pdf
So my question is: Have any of you thought about your life's Mission Statement and if you have did you face any surprises in its proclamation?
Did it change you and your thought patterns, give you insight to who you are as a person? Is it something you want to think about?

I do have a mission statement, Angel, and I think I always have too. It's a way I live my life, it's my own code, it's the promise I keep to myself. You know, I'm not real good at planning for the future, or visualizing myself 10 or 20 years into it, but I am good at living the now and the near future, and how I do it is very important to me. I believe I know why I'm here on this earth and what I'm supposed to do and I work every day at doing that. I just want to make my little corner of the world a better, more loved and a more loving place. That's all. It's like when p1ke posted the discussion about what you would want as your epitaph - I answered 'she loved and was loved'. That's what the world's about for me. Not making money. Not being famous. There won't be any big mark left on the world by me, at least, not so's you could see, anyway. But I intend to leave a mark on a hell of a lot of people, Angel. I can bring love and light and hope and the promise of a brighter tomorrow to people and that's what I do. I can't even imagine how that sounds, truly, it probably sounds awful, ridiculous, stupid, egotistical, god knows what, but it's my reality. And my own brand of a mission statement, I guess. And now, it's off to my chair, for a rest, and a movie, and a cocktail, I think. I so rarely drink when I'm home, but tonight will be different - a little self-love is in order, I believe. I think you know how I get, Angel, when I get over tired, and well, I'm there, so god only knows where I might ramble to from here if I let myself. Now I just have to find a good movie to choose from On Demand. I watched Atonement a day or so ago, and I was really surprised - I didn't expect to like it, but I did, very much, and I had no idea that Vanessa Redgrave was in it, and I'm a huge fan of hers, and I cried, hoo boy, did I cry. Ok, see ya, bye.

You've left a mark on me Nova. A very loving, connected one. So has Angel.
All kidding aside, I am a better person for the knowing of you both. Thank you.

I have never even thought of a personal mission statement before sweety! I don't think now is the right time for me to try and work on this but it does sound very interesting and I think it would make us look at ourselves closely and know what we really wish to achieve! Thanks for posting this and I am going to save it for when my brain is ready to play ball with me and actually focus on something for more than a minute or 2! lol xx

Good Evening MO :))) Thats all this little exercise is for Sugar, just to get one to look at and learn about oneself. It really will give you insight into what is most important to you as an individual. I am not sure my brain is ever playing ball with me straight up LMAO. If it is I keep missing the catch!

You left me speechless, Angel. I had to come here and read what the other responders had to say b4 I was able to get clued in what this discussion was about. Now that I know..
Yes, I created on paper my mission statement back in high school. It was a requirement to pass my English course. Of course, over the years things have changed and had to revise it several times but the main purpose of it is still straight as an arrow, to help animals in need however I can. Think that is my purpose here on earth. What God has put me on this planet for.

Blackbriar, It is a strange concept, when I was first confronted with it at a personal nursing workshop I was like, what? say again? Today has been one of those introspective days and I was thinking about that Mission Statement from years ago and went in search of something I could share with you all.
I am glad you were able to get clued in, we all start yakking and crying and its hard to tell where the discussion is sometimes LMAO. We always get back on point though. Its one of the things I love most about mylot.... Okay here I go again with the rambling LMAO.... SEE what I mean!

I downloaded that PDF file about the mission statement. Actually this is very similar to all the things I've been reading in relation to applying the Law of Attraction...in fact some of the materials I've downloaded on the various LOA sites and The Secret sites are almost identical....In his book The Attractor Factor by Joe Vitale, he actually has a thing to fill out very similar to that mission statement. So I'm always filling those "mission" statement or goal-setting plans all the time and every once in awhile I revise them...even without a written goals-plan or mission statement I've always known what I wanted to be, do and achieve in my life...always been very goal oriented. It does help though to write things down as a reminder of what one wants to achieve in life so it's staring at you in black and white...a friendly nudge to get your buns going toward that goal

Pye, I sure feel it is important to regroup and take inventory sometimes. See if we are still on the right track. Thats what I have been thinking about this afternoon and what drew my mind back to the Mission statement for my life.
Some people are lucky and that instinct is born in them, others like myself really have to hunt it down and tackle it head on. I really need a refresher course myself at this point :)))) Hope there is something there you find useful.

By the time I was six, I had had enough of people, foster homes, authority and life in general. But every morning I woke up because my heart still beat, so I had to make a decision. Live well or die hard. I chose life. I chose to "treat other's as I wanted to be treated" (I'd just learned about that concept) and I have not deviated from it much in the ensuing years. I refuse to hate, though there are people I intensely dislike because of their behaviour, nothing else, and I always look for the good because I want people to look for the good in me.
So I guess that's my mission statement: Treat others the way I would wish to be treated. And always, always, find the laughter.

No I have never made a mission statement. Right now, if I were to do one, it would be something like this:
Figure out what I want to do with my life and then do it!
Here I am at 50 still figuring out who I want to be and what I want to do.

WOw, funny you are discussing this. I was actually talking about it with my instructors today. We started by talking about a mission statement for their classes, but then discussed it in a more personal level.
The thing is, the link you left will be really helpful :) Talk about good timing LOL
Anyway, regarding your questions. I kind of have life mission statement but one that surprised me when i wrote it. It turns out that family is my main preoccupation, mission etc. etc. etc. - It was not as much a surprise but a shock and not because I care about my family but because it is so high in importance rating that borders unhealthy in a way - I suppose:)
It was actually from there that I kind of discovered other things about myself that I had never thought about.SO yes, it did give me quite a lot to think about and needed insight in some things.
It might have changed some things in me, specially in terms of recovering my self esteem and confidence and becoming a bit more assertive - but not much yet, still have to work on that :)
Great discussion :):)

The first time I remember hearing about a personal mission statement was about 8 years ago. This coupld had their own personal mission statement then they had a marriage statement a family statement with goals to acheive in each one. They had had a meeting to discuss their statements and came back to the table to dicuss those things in six months to see if they were on track. It was amazing and interesting to listen to. I was totally inspired by them but I guess not enough to do one myself. However I do think abou it from time to time and think I would accomplish something with my life if I would just do that in some form or another. Do you have a yearly statement like they did? Do you check it every so often to see if you are on track for what you want in your life? I really think these are great and I really think I should do one I just don't for some reason. Lazy I guess!

Hello Angel! :-)
I made my first personal mission statement in my teens when I was on a scouting camp (It was a different scouting activity, not the normal one that we know). The basics of that statement haven't changed ever for me even after over a decade now. But, there sure are changes in details with every major turn in my life and as I seek wisdom from many around me.
I have gone through your linked article/workbook and found it very useful for anyone who would like to be helped to work out a personal mission statement. It sure provides a chance for reader to look, observe and think deeply into oneself. And, in knowing oneself is the knowledge of all universe. Thanks for the link, Angel! :-)

I have been looking forward to your visit with me here Kamran. I have suspected that your mission statement would be quite involved and detailed. There is more to you than meets the average eye.
Thank you for looking the PDF over, I agree that it will provide a useful tool, for self evaluation and add depth to our thinking about ourselves. I must do this on occasion. Especially if I am beginning to feel, shallow and frivolous with my life. It happes to all of us that we get egotistical, self centered. It creeps in quietly with out us paying attention. Introspective tools such as this helps to bring us back to the center and keep us straight.
You are quite Welcome Dear One.

Angel, the time I took was for going through the file and examining it's questions/options and method. I do think that it's a good workbook.

Very true my friend! introspection, every now and then, does help seeing problems in the way of 'real' pride rather than fake one, and then helps in removing them. You are right, we all need it. Thank you for the reminder, my friend! :-)

I have done this sort of thing in college, I think Mission Statements rock, and also for Business they are a very useful tool. In any case I just downloaded this mission statement and I am going to fill it out and do a new mission statement.
I think now is a good time to reassess the one I did before and make it more related to where I am today.
I do like these kind of things, I think they are very important. Thanks for raising the issue, and reminding us all of the benefits of making a mission statement.
I will get back to you when I filled it out, probably over the weekend. Have a great week my friend.

I have been thinking hard about if I ever had a mission statement and now I think I did looking back for eighty years Iwas so idealistic at eighteen wanted to help people and do good and started out to take nurses training and flubbed up in a catholic nurses school as One I was not catholic and two I was too young. Later I decided to just work as a nurses aid and most of myadult life until I dropped out for two kids I worked as a nurses aid and I did help a lot of peopleand I was fulfilled. then later on when my son was in his late teens and early twenties I started to work in our local library as a page shelving books and all sorts of media and worked there for twenty four years.I washelping people so yes I have fulfilled my mission statement to help people.

Ok Angel, I had to read through the discussion before I shared my thoughts. Many people can view this topic from many different angles, I wanted to try to stay within the realm here.
I was born with a sponge spirit. Everything around me has absorbed into my being. The poeple in my life, the experiences we've shared, the trials we have met, the wisdom we have gained. It all seeps in little by little. I'm here on this earth to grow and mature and to share all of that with as many poeple as possible. I've also always thought outside the box in every earea of my life, leading me to new ways of looking at old things. And I ams supposed to share all of this with the people that touch my life in some way.
In short, life is journey not a destination. And the people I take along with me on this journey are what its all for. I'm on this journey to build these people up and support them in anyway I can.

Wow, finding my own personal mission is actually a goal I've set myself to achieve this year. For the past few years I've been trying to think about this, meditated about this.. but until now I'm still lost, it's not making any sense at all because it's really hard, trying to find out what we were born in this world to be.

Yes, I did create a Mission Statement a year or so back as part of a workshop exercise, and it has profoundly effected my life. I decided my mission is to learn as much as I can and share as much of what I learn as I can with as many people as I can. That, and "harm no one," pretty much sums it up.
