I was just watching some news videos online about the lady in Austria who was held captive by her father for twenty-four years. It was absolutely heartbreaking and for a moment I put myself in her position. I know she didn'thave much down there with her in the cellar but surely she would have had a few gadgets like..a toothbrush or a hairbrush. She spent so much time locked in the cellar I think she should have perhaps pulled a pipe or brick or piece of wood form somewhere and carved a knife out of it or used it to bang her father over the head or something? However I wouldn't be suprised if he was prepared for that and made sure it didn't happen. Also, it has been said that he was a very controlling and dominating man so she was probably brainwashed by him.
However, if it was me, I would have choked him with a sheet or something.
What would you have done?

Perhaps she was not to smart,or maybe as you said she was brain washed...I would have done something i would not have stayed in that celler....I would have knocked him over the head with something and got out of there...I would have been very busy looking for a way out...Did it say how after 24 years how she mananged to get ....free? Did her father die? anyway that is a sad story for sure.

I would love to speculate but you always hear stories about this same topic and people say that you just do not know until your in that situation where as if you were you think you would have the perfect answer but when I heard about the story the first thing that came to my mind is that this guy must of had this girl really brainwashed and scared out of her mind and that hads strength the argument because when he captured in the basement she was only 11 years old and that alone gave him alot of power over her because when your kid your father is like god and you dont want to upset your father.

Gosh that is really so hard to say coffeeshot, i think if you lived in captivity for as long as she and her children did, you become accustomed to that captivity. Stockholm syndrome is what I think its called. She probably loved her father, he was alll she knew. She had to depend on him for her very life and the lives of those kids.....
What would I have done, in my right mind your right, I would have found a way to have done away with his life. In a deprived mental state I just can not answer that question with any certainty.

I was quite shocked when i read about this... and appalled as to how such a thing could happen to a country that is quite rich and considered as peaceful... seem like scumbags come in different sizes and shapes...
But in my case... i would have done what you have thought of... but i quite understood why she did not do anything... since i think her father instilled fear... and a sense of not being worthy in her... i hope she can still live the rest of her life happily and without fear...

What this Austrian father did to his own daughter is both sickening and horrendous, and I really sympathize with her and all her children. I am not sure whether to consider the victim Elizabeth as being very stupid or hopelessly brainwashed to the point that she became so helpless and submissive. According to her account to investigators, her father first raped her when she was 11 years old. When she was imprisoned in the underground cellar, she was 18 years old. The father continued to rape her and fathered her 6 children during her captivity. Surely, she must be sane and mature enough to know that all these things done to her by her own father were wrong and criminal. Yet she did not make any attempt (regardless successful or not) to get out of this situation, nor did she report the first rape to her mother or anyone else, which might have put her father away before this cellar imprisonment. If I were her, I will use any opportunity I can to steal my way out when he is least guarded. I will definitely not want to be locked up and become my father's captive forever.

i have heard about this story too and i really feel sorry for that woman and all that she had to go through...i think that i would have been like you i would have found something to do to try and get away...but at the same time if she felt bad and thought well i can't do this to my father no matter what he does that may be why she didn't try to do anything like that...

i will definitely not going to stay at that cellar for that long... it is so horrifying... i will definitely find a way to escape and run away from the father... i think there will be gadgets inside her room that she can use to attack her father if she wants to... may be she is just too tired and surrendered to her fate which is a pity... i hope the father will be punished as hard as the law can...

I'd probably figure out a way to make some kind of weapon myself...I mean they'd have to give you stuff for your food sometime, right? A teacup or something would even do.
"Killer tea cup"
But anything could do, if you're desperate.
I know you never know until you actually get into a situation, but there's ALWAYS something.

I think it is really easy for us to say we would have found a way to escape or fight back in some way but we were not in that situation and I think the reality would be a lot more threatening than we can imagine. I am also sure that he didn't just start emotionally and mentally abusing her (or sexually abusing her) AFTER he imprisoned her - he had probably been grooming her for years and she would have no fight or mental strength left to fight him - can you imagine being under the control of a man like that for so long? I do understand why you say you would do that and I like to think I would do the same but the reality of the situation is that none of us know what we would have done in her position! xxx

I was so furious when I heard about this story. I can understand wanting to lash out and do anything however drastic it took to get out. She must have been horribly brainwashed and possibly totally apathetic. Also, here is an excerpt from the story "The three imprisoned children were taught to read and write by their mother with Fritz passing clothing and food through a hatch. A tube provided ventilation". Maybe this explains why she couldn't escape. But you know how questions go - what happens if there was a plumbing problem or electrical problem? After that many years, the place must have needed repair and did he go in then?

At first I'm sure it would have been very easy for her father to overpower her. He probably kept her away from anything that would have contributed to his demise. As time progressed she probably gave up all hope of any other existence and as for the children that were born into that environment, they didn't know anything else. Perhaps thats what they thought life was all about. Being imprisoned was the norm to them. If you don't know that an outside world exists, how could you want to escape into it?

I think that when we are on the outside of something looking in, it is all too easy to say that we would have done this, or we would have done that.
I would like to think that I would have done something, but I guess that by looking at pictures of the evil you know what, he probably had her just where he wanted her. He probably messed with her head and told her things to make her do what he wanted.

My daughter said that to me that she must have had a knife and fork to eat with could she not have killed him, but I think she may have been terrified and maybe always thinking that maybe he would let her out, God it is awful to think of your own father doing that to you.

I have been reading about this and I think the man must be a very controlling and dominating man and his wife and daughter must have been afraid of him. It is absolutely awful and I cannot imaging being in that situation, especially giving birth 6 times alone in that cellar and being totally dependent on an abusive father.
I wonder if she did think of attacking or trying to kill him. From what I have read, she is quite disturbed in her head now. Not surprisingly.

I would have to read more and understand the situation more because i would have done anything at that point of time. There has been lot of stories running across the world with the same manner. I would rather listen to him about his opinions though it may seem to be a brainwashing session and learn more from him and attack him in his route..

Personally I don't know exactly what i'd do in that situation, but i'd try to endulge.
I think that I would do my best to try and find a way out, looking everywhere twice. If I failed at that, then I'd try to make a weapon from something found around me. Most likely not finding anything helpful enough it would be an hanger or something of that sort, maybe even try to steal something off my father when he came down. I'm sure he had something on him if he was having her give birth to children for him, he had to have something with him when she gave birth. All she'd really need was a ball point pen, its the most dangerous weapon a woman can carry. Just make sure to aim correctly, and stab straight for the jugular and it will take anyone down.
I don't know why anyone would act like that man, or even consider doing such a thing. I hope that he gets a maximum punishment for the things he did to his daughter, its just dispicable. I can't imagine that happening to me, but I know i'd be scarred for life if it did.

if i put myself in her shoes and try to imagine i think i wouldn't have able to do anything!
i think the guy must have brainwashed her and she wouldn't really have any idea about what the guy is doing! i mean she wouldn't really be knowing what is right and what is wrong basically!
if that guy is dominating he would have made sure that she don't get any inklings about the outside world. and i guess she wouldn't even know how to set herself free from that guy or so to say she wouldn't be knowing what her rights as a human being is!!!
i think if i was in her place, i would still be waiting for some one to come along and rescue me!!
