Well we got a lilac bush from my wifes boss 2 years ago and planted it. We did not get any flowers from it last year. But this year there are a couple at least blooms that will be great to see. I love watching plants, bushes, shrubs, flowers, trees etc growing up. especially when they are new and never flowered before. It brings a huge sense of accomplishment seeing the hardwork of tending to them so gently finally show. I am proud of this a lot as is my wife. Do you get a big thrill when you have a plant that finally blooms for you and all your hardwork? So far this is the only blossom we can see. But there are a LOT of buds yet to open so who knows how many flowers we will get. Seems to be a purple variety of Lilac as well.

Lilacs are my favorite flower, I love the smell, unfortunately they don't last long..
As you can see, mine are almost ready to be cut, but for some reason only a few branches have flowers on them..Of course this is only one of three I have. The original one was planted by the person we bought the house off of and they planted it too close to the trees and now it doesn't get enough light..So about 8 years ago, I took cutting from the first one and planted 2 more in my yard..

I think it may have to do with how the branches are cut possibly as far as the flowers etc. I don't know for sure. But I may read up on it possibly.

Well if you can find out for me, I would appreciate it..All I know is, after blooming season, they should be trimmed..I try not to trim too much because the house you see on the other side, is the neighbors house that I would rather have a huge bush to separate us...

My mom has about 4 lilac trees on her property, and oh they smell so good. I was practicing with my camera over the weekend and took a few shots of the blooms of the lilac tree as well as some other blooming things that she has as well.

Definitely! I'm forever transplanting lilacs, peonies, snowballs.. asparagus and even raspberry(even though it spreads pretty fast all on its own). I transplanted some peonies which were getting shaded out where they were, to a new somewhat wild place the fall before last. I still had to baby them last year with lots of watering, weding, etc, and nothing much came of them, but I was happy to see they were alive.. tho I did lose some.. But this year their shoots are coming up nice and strong and healthy! It'll sure be interesting to see if I get any flowers.. A new perenniel plant I bought last year is coming back.. I had a hibiscus though that didn't make it. Happy Gardening!

One of those hanging planters of pansies is a good idea.
She is dying to get some planted out front. Or even any
kind of annual flowers.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! Yes, I do feel the same way when my hard work has achieved good results. I do love my vegetable plants when they yield good results. I do love my vegetables because we could eat vegetables free of harmful pesticides. And I am glad to know that your lilacs are doing great and I am sure that you will have an amazing beautiful flower garden when all will be in full bloom. Just my thoughts dear friend. Take care and have a nice day!

Oh, I love lilacs, they have the sweetest smell, and when I see and smell them I know spring is finally here.
Yes, I love to see my efforts come to bloom. We have a lot of clay and sand in our yard, so the last two summers have been spent just trying to get anything to grow. We planted grass seed three times last summer, and each new little patch that sprung up caused me to dance and sing. It looks like we are in for another couple rounds this summer as well, since we only have about half the yard covered this spring;(

Dig up a few inches of soil and till in some good black topsoil then? If not till it in then just add it to the clay/sand etc.

My opinion is that you need to do the WHOLE yard not just the patchy areas. I had the same problem in my front yard. So I finally threw about 100 bags of black soil on the lawn and spread it all over then seeded it and now I've got a nice green lawn.

Yup, that's what we did last summer. We rented a tiller, and took the whole weekend breaking up the ground. We removed a bumch of the clay and replace it with top soil and manuer. Then planted and fertilized and covered with hay. Watered every day for weeks. It started to look pretty good by the end of summer, bt we are back to a patchy yard this spring. Kinda frustrating, but at least I'll have something to dance for later in the summer!

I love watching stuff grow too. I planted a couple of rasberry plants a neighbor gave me, last year. I look out and the are getting leaves on them and doing good. My son has been getting the garden ready for planting. I love the springtime with all the new growth. I have only had my house for a couple of years, this is the second spring in it. We are still working on the yards. When I got the house the yards were a jungle, overrun with trees and bushes. We cut everything down and are starting over. We are still battling some of the tree stumps and Rose Of Sharon trees. One or two Rose of Sharon trees are nice, just not a yard full of them. After awhile they will grow like weeds. They spread like weeds too. I do love lilac bushes, that was always my grammas favorite.

We've had our house for 5 years now. I started gardening the second year here. The first year was spent getting the front lawn back to green and getting the flower beds started. Then came the garden, then the rasberry bushes, then the apple trees, then the grapes. Who knows what's next. Cash will tell what's next.

Just reading the title I knew it was your post, Grandpa Bob. lol How you feeling? Better I hope. Glad to hear your lilac is blooming for you this year. My one is covered in blooms as well as the small crabapple out front. The freeze we got apparently wasn't deep enough to kill the buds. Taters are doing great as well. They are really leafing out and growing. Don't think I'll ever have to water them with all the rain we got.

it is always a huge thrill when you see the fruition of your labors. I love lilacs but only have one rather small tree in the yard... even so when the wind blows it wafts its lovely aroma through out the property. last year it did not bloom so very well - I notice that we have a lot of suckers coming up around it, going to have to take care of that!

Dig them up and transplant them a couple feet from the original bush. They make great border/privacy cover as well.

Oooh, I love lilacs!
We have a bush here that I didn't realize was lilac until the leaves really popped out and it started budding (remember, we got here just a few months ago so I didn't see everything last spring/summer).
It's flowered almost all over now and is giving off the most wonderful smell in the yard. The people across the street have two small ones by the driveway, then a larger one and a white one further into the yard. I can't wait until the honeysuckle is out completely too. The air will smell heavenly!
Lilacs don't mature to flower until at least 3 yrs or so, so if you got it two years ago and it's flowering this year, you've done well!

Our back fence is covered in Lilcas so this is not new to me. Just this one is in MY yard. HAHAHA! The wife and I both love the aroma from Lilacs also. Thanks this is the 3rd year I think we have had it. Not too sure. But at least 2 years.

Yes, Grandpa Bob, I love seeing the fruits of my labors! And flowers are one of my favorites! I bought some primroses a couple of weeks ago, that had been pretty neglected by a local store. I got a great discount on them and brought them home and have nursed them back to health and they are blooming again and are so pretty in the pots that I put them in. I love the Spring!

oh yes when we had our own home I loved to watch
my new plantings take off and bloom. I had azaleaz'
and camellias and tons of fushias too. we also had
an herb garden and a small vegetable garden. The biggest
mistake we ever made in our lives was when we sold our'
house and at the wrong time and could never get the
money together to buy another house. so we ended
our married lives living in apartments complexes.
My husband has been gone now for years and I do enjoy
this complex as it has a lot of blooming shrubs and
plants and blooming trees and other trees. it is c alled
El Dorado gardens for a good reason. and we have a patio
with a small garden plot which we could plant. I am still'
not giving up on the idea of some flowers here.
