How Far Would You Go To Lose Weight?

We have all seen the advertisements. Take this pill, drink this smoothie, buy this DVD, and for 4 easy payments of $149.99 this body (insert stick figure clad in a bikini, or muscle bound, tanned, 6 pack abs model here) can be yours! Really? Who believes these claims? Who thinks that weight loss is that simple? Not me. But I still set unrealistic goals for myself. I have 8 weeks to lose 30 pounds. Why 30 pounds? Because that will take me down to the weight I was when I got pregnant with my last baby. Why 8 weeks? Because I am getting married and going to a tropical paradise on my honeymoon. How do I plan to do it? I don't really but it is good to reach for the stars because you are halfway there when you get to the tree tops. But I have enlisted the help of a friend and tomorrow we start a program called "Lose That Bootie Camp" Basically every Tuesday and Thursday for the next 8 weeks her and I will be reduced to sniveling piles of flesh with muscle failure while we attend these classes. These classes consist of: Kick boxing, belly dancing, "The good. The bad. And the really ugly step class", Yoga, Pilates, cardio aerobics, resistance and weight training." The classes are each 45 minutes long and run 3 a day on Tuesdays and Thursday. Are we crazy? Would you take classes like these? How far would you go to lose weight? Would you take a pill, join a gym, or take the easy way out and get lyposuction? Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated!

afternoon Cyn! The classes sound exciting, that can only be good for you ! wow though thats a lot of weight to lose in 8 weeks. I know how you feel about it however. I am of average weight now and have been most of my life. But once after my 2nd son was born, I was way over weight. I had gained 60lbs during the pregnancy, and only lost 5 of that during the birthing process. LMAO I am short as well, so 55lbs on me looked like 100 or 75 on taller women. I was miserable. I had baby blues big time on top of that, so before I topped out and came to my senses I was nearly 75lbs over what is normal for me. I looked like a blimp and that is no chitting. I went to curves, now this is not an endorsement for the program as it was the only gym of program close to me... Man the friends I made and all of the support I got, I started losing the weight it seemed with out effort other than my bi weekly visits to the gym.... I began to clear my head I felt alive again. I am probably like 15 20 lbs heavier than I should be, but heck I am 47 and that middle age spread and all went right to my hips and belly. I am not bothered by it really, I should be in a gym again, I just have to much to do and lazy when I am not doing anything.. heck it would cut into my mylot time:))) I am rambling here..... You asked how far would someone go, I do have a girl friend(she was obese 200lbs to lose) that ordered a pill from the internet that turned out to be a tape worm.. yes you read right a worm egg. She did not lose weight but instead got anemic and very ill. Once she recovered from that she had the lap band inserted .. wow man does she look good!

My old neighbor had a gastric bypass but she was 410lbs and about 3 years later she is down to a size 10. I'm not grossly overweight and if you ask anyone who knows me this "fat" I speak of is all in my head but I know how I used to look and I don't see why I shouldn't look that way again. I don't really think I am going to reach my goal but then again I don't really need to. Even 20 lbs would make me feel a lot better about strutting around the beach in my bikini.

I used to diet all the time until I found the one that actually worked. It wasn't a diet at all, just very sensible eating habits. Well, sort of. My Mom gave me a book, called "Fit for Life". It is just a different way of combining food so that your digestive system doesn't have a problem digesting it and keeps it hanging around for too long. Now see if I remember the reasons correctly. I remember how, but not all the whys for sure so forgive me any errors. Basically, you eat natural, pure real fruit for breakfast and snacks. No limit on how much. Just don't eat less than 4 hrs before bed, or another meal. I really liked that part, all you can eat of something and still lose weight, and be healthy without missing vitamins. I hated all thoses stupid diets that always had me starving, therefore cranky and mad at the world. Or working my a$$ off at a gym, that just made me more hungry from all the exertion, and not satisfy that hunger. Grrrrr. Then, you don't eat potatoes, bread or rice with your meat. For example, I would make supper for the whole family, with a selection of 1 meat, a potatoe or rice, and 2 different veggies or also a salad. I would eat all I wanted from every group except that I would choose.....potatoe or meat. It is sort of high in fibre so it is best to get into it gradually, so your system has time to adjust. Your stools will become pretty loose overnight if you switched completely overnight, if you get my drift. But your system gets accustomed to it and things even out and the mild discomfort from things passing through faster lets up. Part of the theory is that keeping food in your system that causes constipation is bad for your colon. And in eating the potatoe and meat together, your stomach has a hard time digesting both at the same time. Therefore it is in your system for way too long. Longer than it should be to be healthy anyway. Apparently since we are omnivores (eat everything), our stomach will produce acid to digest the meat, just like a carnivore (dog, cat, etc). When we eat a starch like a potatoe, it produces an alkaline to digest it, like an herbivore (sheep, cow, etc). Do you know basic chemistry? What happens when you mix an acid with alkaline? Nothing! They neutralize each other......SO, part of the food gets digested, but then they mix and digestion stops. So your stomach keeps trying to put more and more acid and alkaline in your stomach to try and digest this big lump in there to get it moved along like it should be. Because of this, you have poorly digested food, that causes constipation, which causes other health problems I won't go into here. It is not a lose weight fast diet. None of those really work anyway. You never keep it off. Since those type of diets starve you so badly, you often binge to make up for what you feel is neglect and end up gaining it all back anyway. Plus, starving yourself only serves to teach your body how to better store fat for when you are starving. This new way of eating helped me get the undesired pounds off easily, and safely, and healthy, without any fancy stuff, expensive foods, killing myself at a gym, and I KEPT IT OFF, because I still eat this way to this day. Now mind you, I am not a model, but that is not what I want anymore. It just seemed to cause too much attention with the men. Really a pain in the a$$ and more trouble than it was worth. So I now choose to carry an extra 10 pounds right now. I love chocolate, you see. hee hee. Sorry. Shouldn't have said that. Didn't mean to torment you. Anyway, I hope this helps. It made all the difference for me.

I eat a piece of dark chocolate every day regardless of what "diet" I'm on. I should go find this book you speak of. I already have the fruit thing taken care of. I eat fruit for breakfast and lunch and always take a double serving of veggies with my dinner or end up eating some sort of salad. The starch/meat thing also makes a lot of sense. Now the next question is why do steakhouses always ask you how you want your potato prepared with that 10 oz. sirloin they are serving up for you. They are all in on it. Do you know if I could have brown rice for lunch and then 6 oz. of grilled chicken for dinner or should I limit my selection to one or the other every day? Better yet, just tell me where to get the book. LOL Thanks so much for your comment!

I don't know where to buy it, as it was probably over 15 yrs ago my Mom gave it to me. But I remember the title well "FIT FOR LIFE". Check bookstores, libraries, I guess. About the combinations, I would basically pick the potatoe at one meal and the meat at another in the same day. Although I have had the odd completely vegetarian day, when I was just in the mood for that or wanted to speed up the weight loss. But the more fibre, the more gas and more often you go to the loo, too. Yes, I always had 2 servings of veggies, sometimes one was in the form of a salad, or whatever I felt like. That was the joy of it. I was still eating all I wanted, with no limit, so I was full, but I was still eating from all the food groups regularly. And I did lose weight. Plus the book even forgives you when you go off it occasionallly. It just says, move on and go back to the way you should have been eating. It takes awhile for it to become second nature. And I have always found restaraunts to be more than willing to swap me a 2nd serving of veggies or a salad instead of the potatoe, at no extra charge. It is probably the chocolate that keeps my extra 10 lbs on now, but I am a chocolate lover, and refuse to give it up. I also work outside alot, and especially in the winter, I NEED that extra 10 lbs for insulation. The one year I decided to shed the 10 lbs to look better, I was sick all winter long. So I beleive that those articles that tell you your optimum weight are off by 10 lbs anyway. Because only a model, that never exerts herself or does no REAL work, could live at that weight and still be healthy. I work, by choice, as I feel it keeps me fit, but I need the extra 10 lbs because there are sometimes days where I actually get so busy, that I forget to eat until 2 - 4 pm. Which I know is not healthy. But the 10 lbs extra acts like a buffer, I guess. Personally the models nowadays are way too skinny and definitely unhealthy and they are our role models as to what we should look like. I prefer Marilyn Monroe. She looks womanly, healthy, voluptuous and sexy. I'm glad to share. It isn't a diet, short term, it is a way of eating healthy. I liked that better than starving.

If i had the money, my butt would be in the gym 7 days a week. It is hard to get moving w/o that gym membership. I think surgery is much to extreme.

I had a gym membership a couple of years ago and unless I was in an organized class like yoga or water aerobics I never went. I couldn't motivate myself to go at it alone. That's why I'm so glad my friend has offered to enlist in the insanity with me. We will kick each other in our collective big butts to make sure we reach our goals.

Wow I could never do what you are doing to lose weight I have Fibromyalgia so I have to do low impact kinda stuff, Yoga and water excersises. I watch what I eat and I drink a lot of water I try not to snack on stuff and cut down on the sugar and cows milk. Cows milk makes me swell like a bloated beached whale so I have to not drink it. I'm losing weight but very slowly and I just try to get to a healthy weight my body is comfortable with. I need to lose 50 lbs and that would bring me down to a reasonable weight I don't look so bad now but I would feel better if I lost it. I hope you have a wonderful time on your trip! It sounds like you are really trying to get rid of those yucky extra lbs. I wish you the best when you feel like giving up just think about your goal and picture yourself 30lbs less and before you know it you will be there.

I have a dress hanging on the front of my closet door. It is more spandex than cotton and white! When I look good in that dress I am sure to look good in anything!

Well I would rather not take any pills. I think that taking pills would do no help but only make some more damages to your body. So I might consider going to a gym or exercise since that would be a healtier method i can use to lose weight.

I still don't understand why you want to lose the weight and have left it till now when you know that you will be putting it straight back on again if you stop the workouts...seems a bit silly to me. That's not like you cyn.

Actually I am very good at maintaining my weight without any additional "workouts" once I reach my goals. I have been that way since I was a teenager. I lost 13 pounds last month all on my own doing nothing different then what I normally do. So I am pretty confident that with these classes I will reach my weight loss goal then not have to take these classes to maintain it. But my instructor (even though she is a female Hitler) is really great and I think I will still take one or two of her classes regardless of if I need to or not.

Women are really crazy about losing weight, including me. When I was still at high school, one day I was just sick of myself of being that fat. Maybe it's not that fat(152cm/50kg), but girls around me are skinny:-( I tried to eat really little and kept doing sports. Then I was 45kg until I graduated from high scool. But when I was at university, my study is not that busy as before and I eat more and become 155cm/53kg now. I tried some other ways including taking pills. It did help me to lose some kilos but I gained the weight afterwards. Now, I am just trying to lose some weight in a healthy way.

Hi cyn, Well apparently I won't go far because I am definitely over wieght and haven't managed to lose even 1 pound in some time. I used to be a size 0 and now hover around 194. Quite a defference huh? Well my tiny period was about 20 years ago. I do have a problem with my wieght but can't seem to make myself do anything about it. Not that I ever want to be a size 0 again but I would like to drop about 60 of what I have now. Some of the classes you have scheduled sound like they will help you though. I am not going to take any pills or even think about lyposuction. I occassionally do get into the excercise but it never sticks. One of these days I will get the hang of it though so I refuse to stress over it. I do wish you the best of luck in this new endeaver...Mamablaze!!

To be honest, I would take those classes you mentioned if I'm desparate. The most effective way to lose pounds quick is to exercise more and watch what you eat. My sister gained 60 pounds after pregancy and she managed to lose it all in three months. She exercised fours hours everyday plus she had only one meal per day. I think this is really crazy and unhealthy though it works...

I have been on Weight Watchers now for 5 weeks this is my 6th week and I have lost 22lbs. It isn't so much as being on a diet, just changing your portion size and the types of food you eat. I haven't had a problem with needing to cheat, cause I can eat whatever I want to. So if you started doing those classes with a diet it should work real well for you.
