I just got back from the grocery store and I am in utter shock. I bought 4 small bags of groceries (one of them being a gallon of milk) and paid $46.00!!!! There was nothing really expensive…a chicken dinner for Hubby, a couple $3.00 pizza’s, a gallon of milk, a small bag of mini pizza's, a bag of store brand cereal, 3 cans of store brand tuna for Morgana, 2 boxes of Mac and cheese and that’s it. I almost had a heart attack when she rang it up. It’s outrageous. I triple checked the receipt and it’s accurate so it wasn’t an error. The only two higher priced items were the chicken dinner and the mini pizza's. We don’t get foodstamps or anything (we only qualify for $10.00 anyways) so we have to pay for food with cash and at this rate it won’t be much food at that. I’m sitting here wracking my brain trying to think what I could stock up on that is still relatively cheap that Hubby and I would eat and I can’t think of anything. Tomorrow I’m supposed to go shopping for the month…now I don’t know what to get. I think I’m going to post this and then go take a nap…I’m stressed out now. Are prices this bad where you are? How are you going to battle it? Any ideas on what to stock up on? **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Me and my step dad were just talking about that. I like to go to costco and buy bulk especially the canned tomatoes, fruit and tuna. The tomatoes and fruit have gone up to 1.59 a can. Another thing you can do is ask the store if the have a discount rack. Also find a dented can store and a hispanic store they sale there fruit and vegies really cheap.

Oh my goodness, you're not kidding. They even charged me $5.28 for a bag of apples. I immediately took it to customer service and said I thought it was $3.28 and would like a refund. The lady was so nice, she wasn't sure what the price was, but gave me a $2.00 refund. I dread going to the store because of the prices, and put it off as long as possible.

I know last month when we did our grocery shopping the money didn't seem to go as far. It didn't seem like we got as much as we had in previous months. I'm not looking forward to this months at all due to some changes we've had to make here. My sister is diabetic but it was until recently controlled via oral medication but it stopped working. She was put on insulin and with it a very, very strict diet. No carbs what so ever and no red meat, very limited fats as well. Of course no fruit of any sort, canned or fresh. We only get funds at the beginning of the month so we had very limited supplies here for the last week and half. When we do shopping this coming month we have to get a lot more vegetables, before we would have a veggie and a starch, not to mention a lot more chicken, pork and fish. No cheap hamburger for us or hot dogs. It's going to be a lot more expensive to eat that healthy

I keep hearing about prices going up and stuff and I just get really scared to tell you the truth. My mother used to take welfare and get food stamps but she closed her case so she could go to work. I'm really proud of her but the agency she works for still hasn't called her. I am trying to earn as much money as possible now so that I can at least contribute to the groceries when she doesn't have any money. It's scary to think how much money we have to spend now on food. I mean people can live without having a car because they can find other ways. But food? That is just not possible. Right now my mother is not stocking up on anything because money is so tight that we could barely breathe. ^_^ But when I have enough money in my paypal I am going to go and buy some jello boxes which are $1 each. Some Mac and cheese and some cans of tuna. Or some other stuff that we can use. My mom actually wants to buy two bags of rice before prices start going up so I'll probably buy that rice for her. But this situation is getting really scary. My mom used to get around $450 in food stamps. But I am glad that she closed her case so that we don't have to depend on the gov't so much. We werent' always on food stamps anyways we had to go on it because of an accident but I'm glad that we aren't in it anymore. But that's what I think I am going to buy. Or I'll probably go to the dollar store and see what kind of food I can find there. I think I can find some small neccesities there in the $1 that we can use.

I totally know what you mean - food prices are increasing just like gas prices and everything else. It's because we have a failing economy due to our governemnt's overspending. It sounds like you bought lots of pre-made and convienence meals, which always cost more than say a pound of meat, dry beans, pasta, etc. They can really rack up the cost of food. You may want to look to see if it's more advantageous for you to spend more time cooking, so you can save money on food. I've been cooking beans and soups a lot because they're generally healthy and can save you so much money. You could also focus on making a few really frugal meals a week and only cooking conveinence foods once or twice a week. You would probably cut your grocery bill in 1/3.

When we eat convenience foods at our house it is usually in order to avoid going out to eat, which is even more expensive. Soups and stews in the crockpot help us avoid that, too, though, because they can cook while we work.

I think price increase in all products are all over the world. This is also my problem but not the biggest. I am very disappointed with my salary because it doesn`t increase it is not enough really for my family but still prices is getting worst especially the basic needs.

Yes they are. Grocery prices are rising with the gas prices. It cost more for the stores to get the items in the stores to supply us- The stores suppliers are charing them more because of the rising cost of gas! It's a never ending cycle! It is scary! the price of bread, milk, and eggs has jumped drastically in the last month! It sickens me. I am shopping at Sam's tonight- going to try to stock up on some things... hoping the warehouse prices are better than the local grocery store! I use coupons and match coupons to sales for the week at the local grocery store-- so I'm saving cash still-- but without this and just going in to the store I can drop $50 with a couple og bags. Are you shopping at discount places? here in this area we have Sale A lot & Aldi's stores-- cheaper prices - not a lot of brand names though.

I've been very shocked lately when doing the shopping. I'm getting half the groceries for the same amount of money. Add that to the cost of fuel to actually do the shopping and it's becoming quite prohibitive. My "local" store is a round trip of 120klm and not one of the supermarket giants but a small privately owned franchise, so the prices of goods are much higher without the choices of buying cheaper brands. I have to shop very carefully cos I can't "run to the store" for things I've forgotten or run out of.

I just came from the store too and picked up one bag of stuff and a 10 lb. bag of sugar and it was almost $30. This is ridiculous!! I can't believe the price that things have gone too. I hope that someone in Washington realizes soon that things have to change. I don't know what to stock up on other than buy meat in larger packs if you can find them on sale. Try to use leftovers as much as you can. If you like chicken legs they are usually fairly cheap and watch for sales!!

Oh twoey68...you don't need to tell me about grocery shock. I do happen to get food stamps, and thank God I do otherwise I'd be starving here, cause after my bills if I have about $25 leftover for the remaining of the month I be up shats creek...But even though I do get food stamp benefits they aren't stretching as far as they used to The real winner I think are the cereals that cost so darn much...if one gets the healthier kind of cereals like the granola types, you're looking at a small box for about $6.00 near me...even the crappy cheap kinds of cereals are about that much too. Actually one way to reduce food costs...instead of buying a lot of frozen stuff, try to get things to make for homemade meals. For instance, last month I got a really large piece of beef to make pot roasts or roasting...I divided it up into three sections to stretch to make three separate dinners out of it...one I did as a pot roast, and the other sections as roast beef...it sure did stretch and all for about $8.00!

Yes, I think we're all feeling that pinch. Gas prices are affecting everything else out there. If you're really trying to cut back, start doing more meals from scratch. Use less meat and use more pasta, beans and rice to make it stretch farther.

That's what I've been doing, Ldyjarhead. I would cook a lb of ground beef and make 3 boxes of hamburger helper with that 1 lb. The hamburger helper I got for .50 a box on sale and with coupons.

oh man!!! Aldi's is the bomb to shop at. I just love going in there and filling up a cart then walking out in a state of shock on how little I spent. What I can't get at Aldi's I head to Walmart for, coupons in hand.

You did well! Do you have an Aldi's near you? We just had one open here and the prices are awesome. I always shop there first and then head over to WalMart or wherever to fill in what I can't get at Aldi's.

Me and some co-workers were having this conversation last week. Gas prices going up causing a fuel surcharge to all deliveries causing that to increase in cost in turn but NO increase in our PAY!! Less money means less bought or at least it does for me. Price of fuel in Kuwait is .78 a gallon. GO FIGURE!!

Hey, Well, if you like stringbeans and potatoes, you can make that with sausage. Open a can or 2 of stringbeans leave the juice and same with the potatoes (drain the juice) cut some sausage and cook it then add to the stringbeans and potatoes and serve over rice. You can purchase can beans. Mac and Cheese, Hamburger and hotdogs, etc. There are ways of making meals out of simple things. Cut hotdogs up and add them to pork and beans. Cut some ham and add to mac and cheese. Cook hamburger patties and add to can spaghetti sauce. This are Semi-Homemade dinners Oh and you can cook spaghetti noodles, add butter, parmasean cheese, some garlic powder/seasoning and cut up some ham (can be sandwich ham). Simple and delicious Good Luck at the grocery and to answer your question, yes it is high every where and so you have to learn how to do simple dishes like the ones I just posted above. I am getting tired of eating what I posted. They were all my favorites for when I didn't know what to fix, and now I eat them all the time.

well maybe you should rethink your meals because there are a lot of things that you can do with meals. we eat a lot of home made soups, pasta and we make our own bread. i want to try and have a larger garden this year and for meat, we go to a butcher and for groceries, we go to a grocery store called food basics (they dont give you bags nor do they have a lot of variety) but we spend about $150 per two week period and feed a family of four. (i am looking to cut that down too...)

Can you say inflation, recession,i responsed to a discussion last week about this subject i stated that everytime i go to the store i get sticker shock. Why?do you think them so-call stimulus checks are being mailed out.I do think that to help this economic problem we face is to roll back and freeze the prices. That and this stimulus package could or probably would put a dent in this money pit our government has dug us into.

Prices are horrible lately. I came from Californis, which is a produce state, when I moved to Colorado and was shocked to see produce prices. OMG, lettuce was sold by the pound!??! We used to get 2 or 3 heads for a dollar and watermelon was around 5 cents a pound. They are $5 a melon in Colorado, and here in TN it is about the same. Meats are a little better priced here, and don't even think about dairy products. Milk is actually more expensive than gas! Well, so far. We are having a lot more casseroles lately and that leaves us leftovers for another day.
