i save my cans all the time. So I can take and get money for them at the salvage
yard when I collect enough of them. They do not pay alot, but anything is better than nothing. Why throw them in the trash, when you can get some money for them later? My mother used to go around looking for cans on the side of the road, in parks, etc.

Twice now Ive written a long reply to this post. But both times the webpage has crashed out on me & i've lost it :-( I guess I'm just not *meant* to take part!
However, I'll try again ....
I save all my cans, but i take them to the council recycling facility rather than keeping them for cash myself. To be honest I wouldn't know how to do that arounf here. I often wonder if it is something I ought to investigate though. I've no problem picking up the odd can if it earns me a penny here and there. I pick up litter anyway to throw it away, it's one of my pet hates.
Now I'm not sure whether by cans you mean just drinks cans or whether you include the cans that food comes in? So I have two questions. firstly, don't you have to store an awful lot of them before it's worth cashing them in? in which case, where do you keep them? And secondly, don't you have to wash them well to prevent pests being attracted? Is it worthwhile? I rinse them just now, but i'd have to do a better job if they were going to be hanging around for a while.

Well, I do save all of my soda cans and the cans that my food comes in, dog food etc. And yes I do wash out my cans befor I place them into a bag.If not there would be ants and things in them. I will put mine in large trash bags and put them back in the back yard til I collect enough to take to the place. You do not get alot of money for the cans but anything is better than throwing them away.I wait til I get about 4 big bags then I take them,The place is only about 5 miles from here.I might get $10 bucks.

$10 would be worth it, but I don't believe we have that option here. We are given recycling bins that we put out with the trash and they come around and pick it up.

I assume we are talking soda cans? That is the only thing we get reimbursed for here. We get 5 cents per soda can or bottle, of course we have to pay that 5 cents upfront when we purchase them. Most times I do return them and get the money back, but sometimes, especially if my husband brings them in the car, they get so crushed I cannot return them.
I would like to try to use the money I get from returning the cans towards my savings account, but more often than not I use it to make a further purchas, something I may have forgotten while grocery shopping.
I am going to return some tonight and I have to buy a lunch for my kids to take on a feild trip on Wednesday.

That sounds like a great program that you all have in your area. If more people had this, you probally would not see so many cans laying along the roads, people would cash them in for money. I wish we had that here too.

That sounds like a really good system actually, and I'd welcome seeing it here. Paying a deposit would encourage people to return their empties, and perhaps catch some of those people who don't bother to recycle.
When I visited Holland I was really surprised to see machines in the foyer of the supermarkets which accepted various cans and bottles and gave you a voucher worth money off your shopping. Is this the sort of thing that you have where you are?

Where are you from?
Yes we do have that system here with the return machines at the super markets. There are also a few establishments set up to accept your returns that are seperate from the grocery stores.
Many of the grocery stores will allow accept major brands and the particular brands of soda they sell, and if you have cans or bottles from another location they won't accept it, which is where the seperate establishments come in.
We don't have too much of a recycling problem around here, especially when it comes to the soda cans. It is typical for many people to search for them for a few extra cents.

Sure do! I walk the roadsides, parks, and raid the garbage cans at some stores as well for cans. I crush and save them in 55-gallon contractor bags. Once I have at least 5 bagfuls, I take em in for cash. I average $100 a load, sometimes more. We also recycle scrap metal and tin cans for cash.

I have 3 large bags of crushed cans. We drink Coke here and I can't bear throw them all away! So I rinse them out, crush them and put them in a bag. I really need to find someplace local to take them.

Hey it's me again. And Iv'e picked up two more bags of cans again since my last post. Some of them were already flattened so I don't have to crush those.I guess you already know that you get a little more if they are crushed, because they are heavier without the air in them.

I save my cans and bottles. I also pick up any I find while out. I'm a pet sitter and always have a few plastic bags with me to pick up dogie poop. I love to find cans when I'm out walking. I figure it as getting more per hour for work.

I remember going around to different places and along side the road looking for cans when I was a little girl. We don't do that anymore, but we do save our cans and turn them in for the cash. It's not a lot, like you said, but it's better than throwing them away and not getting anything. I figure we drink our drinks out of the can, we might as well save the cans and get something out of them other than just the drinks. I've even got my mom saving her cans.

My nephew collects them. We give him our popcans whenever we get a big enough bag of them.
He actually just brought in a whackload not long ago. Got somewhere between 25 and 30 dollars for them (I forget the exact amount)

We do not save our cans to cash them in, but we do recycle them. I know when I was a kid we used to do it on certain pop bottles, if we took them back to the shop we got 10p for each one. My mum used to let me take them and then I could keep the money for sweets!! That was fun, I enjoyed doing that, I could get quite a lot of sweets with the money back then.

Do you knoow I have never done that. I have known people who have done so by helping to collect for organizations.I am sure it is worth doing, for one; it detour folks from putting cans all over ther place, and it will help to keep a cleaner environment.

We try to save cans and take them in. We dont drink enough soda make it worth our while but we have family saving them for us and we drive around and pick them up and take them in. We use the money to save up for our family Disneyland trips.

Where I live, saving cans for cash rebate isn't available? So instead my family recycles plastics, cans, newspapers and cardboard..which is all they allow here in Florida. But we are doing this each and every time and if they allowed more..we would recycle more.
Instead, besides recycling, we are involved in not using palstic grocery bags and use reusable cotton ones instead and try to keeep the foods we use down to those that have the least amount of packaging. Veggies and the fruits that grow well here..we do those ourselves in the garden and then can them or package and freeze.
Every little bit helps?

i am not the one who really saves the cans, bottles and other plastic waste, it is my wife that has the real idea of it. she used to save them and later on, our kids bring them to the junk shop to sell. you're right that they don't sell much, but for us, that's a little help for some little needs for the kids...
