My son is five and a half months old and I gave him a dummy whilst we were still at the hospital. He only has it to go to sleep with, and I'm hoping for that to have ceased somewhere between 1 and 2 years of age. How about yourself? Do you have children? Did they use dummies/soothers/pacifiers?

My sister refused to use them with her children just as my mum and dad did with us. I think they're generally dirty because they get dropped, they misshape the teeth and can't be good for the child!

all 3 of mine used a pacifier.... my oldest and my son stopped by about 6 months, however my daughter (son's twin) wouldn't give hers up until she was almost 3! Drove me crazy, but thank goodness it was just a sleepytime thing and not one of those kids that sucked on it all the time while walking around! LOL

My neice who I help raise used one for all of two months. It was one that the hospital had given to us. However it got lost and even though we bought one just like it, same brand and everything, she would not take it. She knew it wasn't the same one.

None of my 4 children would ever take a binky, I tried so I would have something to sooth them with, but they just refused to take one.

Yes, they gave her one at the NICU after she was born, and almost 18 months later she still has it when she sleeps. She's pretty good about not having it during the day, but if I let her she would keep it in 24/7 I think!

I was trying to figure out what the heck a soother was, then I saw the picture lol. A binky or pacifier is what we call them. My oldest 2, right after they turned 1, I made the binkys disappear lol. My 13 month old now is rather dependent on it-mostly at night to fall asleep, so I think we're going to have a harder time making them disappear again. It's going to be soon though, I guarantee that. I really dislike seeing 2,3,4, or even 5 year olds walking around with them in their mouths.

My son used his pacifier until he was 6 months old. I was against using one at all, I had read it was bad for teeth development, however the doctor told me he was born sucking his thumb and that a pacifier would be important for him. He also told me to ween him off of it as soon as possible.
I had no problem getting him to stop using it, which surprised me because I thought I would.

Yes & she is still using it. I only have her using it when she's tired, but during the day I don't let her have it. She talks all the time :) She's 15 months old.

My son never really liked his. We bought several for him and he would play with them but rarely sucked on them. He is a thumbsucker, though. That's usually the first sign that he is tired. He puts his right thumb in his mouth and rubs the back of his head with his left hand.

After taking my son off the bottle at 1yrs old he took up the pacifier. So when he got a little older I thought it was time he got off the pacifier too. So I took it away from him and he started sucking his thumb. Needless to say I could not take that from him. He is 9yrs old now and he still sucks his thumb and can't say anything to him b/c my fiance is 27 and sucks his thumb too.

My son is 9 months old now and still uses his pacifier. He doesn't use it all the time, but it definitely helps him when he is fussy. It really helps him relax too if he is tired.
