Okay Mylotters here is a question for you.
Do you think it is appropriate or inappropriate for employees to wear piercings (other than the ear, e.g. nose, eyebrows, lip, etc) while working directly with the public?
What about tattoos? And even further THONGS????

I don't see a problem with peircings in public. customers are a cross section of society, as are the people serving them. peircings are not offensive, and you are perfectly capable of serving the public and being polite and helpful with a peircing.
tattoos. why ever not. again, they are not offensive (unless the content is, and that's a different matter entirely)
but thongs. why would you ever know if someone is wearing a thong? it's underwear.

I don't personally care for piercings except for in the ears. Nose, lips, eye, etc. are all very disturbing to me. Tatoos don't bother me near as much as long as they are in good taste and not XXX rated. Thongs need to stay inside the pants and not be hanging out or up. I see girls all the time with low riding jeans with their thongs showing. This is just poor taste and poor judgment and I wonder sometimes where their mother is?? So, yes, I vote inappropriate.

I agree with the tattoos, b/c with those you cannot just take them off or out like the thongs and piercings. And I can handle the eye, nose piercings, but the others I think just show tackiness in the work place. Especially when You are taking care of people. It's distracting for another thing.
Thanks for your response. And I agree about the thongs riding up....I think some women (or girls) actually think it is the style and I know some tried to make it that way yrs ago.

No, I think that it is inappropriate to have piercings if you work in the public. People have accepted earrings but I think that to have one in your nose,ear,etc.. is just not appropriate.
Thongs are a personal choice but please keep them in your pants if you are going to wear them.
Tattoos are becoming more acceptable as long as they are not x rated and can be covered if they aren't appropriate.

The appropriateness of attire for me depends on the environment of the workplace. And I don't see anything wrong with piercing or thongs as long as it does not deter you and the people around you from doing your job. However, you must always consider the image of the company or office that you represent especially if it's a public office.
We must also remember that most of the time, the amount of respect we get from others depends on how well we carry ourselves.

good call ashryl. I am not a prude by any means, but I agree with how you carry yourself and I think it you let those thongs (ok I am against thongs completely!!! LOL) show you are in the wrong work environment.
And as for how it affects others, well it leads to a good lunch topic and loads of laughing. And I am sorry if you are going to wear somehting like that in an old folks home you need to laugh at yourself. After all you will be bending over and things will pop out. LOL

I think it depends on what setting the person is working in. I think this time and day it is okay for the most part but I wouldn't want my doctor to be covered in tattoos and piercings... not that I don't like tattoos and piercings (I do).

if your work place is a bar/trip joint...I am talking about like a business or a nursing home. The old people don't understand it and the families get a private show sometimes...and I don't mind them either (I have 2 tats) but I keep them covered and in places where I can cover them.

It really depends on the nature of the work. If your in the corporate world then by all means we should look decent. Tattoos is okay as long as its not vulgar or anything that you don't look like goons or look dirty on it.

If I were a manager, I would not really want my workers to be wearing that much accessories. That of course include piercings. For tattoos, for as long as they are hidden, that would be fine. For thongs, they should be kept "in their pants". I wouldn't like their thongs sticking out of their pants!
